Airline looks to expand operations at Dayton airport, create 70 new jobs

Air Wisconsin Airlines is looking to invest $1 million and bring dozens of new jobs to the region as part of an expansion project at the Dayton International Airport.

Air Wisconsin — a carrier for United Airlines — plans to relocate maintenance and training operations from Virginia to Dayton, which would create up to 70 jobs and generate $3.4 million in new payroll. The airline currently performs maintenance at the airport, but it employs just a few people.

Anyone know how passenger numbers are at Dayton?

As passenger traffic continues to decline at the Dayton International Airport, airports in Cincinnati and Columbus are seeing increases as the busy summer vacation season begins.

Around 93,244 passengers flew out of the Dayton airport in May, more than 3,000 less than the year before during the same month. For the year, 405,659 travelers have flown from the Dayton airport compared to the 416,023 passengers who flew in the same time period last year.

Airport eyes second flight to Houston, direct route to Boston

boston-skyline-and-fan-pier-juergen-roth.jpg

Less than two weeks after the newest non-stop flight from Dayton to Houston lifted off, United Airlines is planning to upgrade its equipment with a larger aircraft to accommodate the passenger load.

And if the carrier sees success with a higher-capacity plane, it could add another flight to the Texas city.

"It's exciting that, in less than 15 days of service, this flight is already successful enough to warrant a larger aircraft," said Terry Slaybaugh, director of the Dayton International Airport. "If we can be successful and fill up this (larger aircraft), the next logical thing for them to do is get a second flight."

Project to watch in 2019: Dayton airport developments

The Dayton International Airport sits on more than 5,000 acres of land and utilizes about 2,500 acres for day-to-day airport operations. Over the past four years the city of Dayton, in partnership with Montgomery County, the Dayton Development Coalition and JobsOhio, have found creative ways to develop the underutilized land.

Reports of two animal supply retailers — Purina Mills and Chewy Inc. — signing lease deals to occupy industrial space near the airport is the latest development in a string of recent wins for the Dayton region, as other tenants have already started to fill new buildings on the property.

Dayton airport developing into logistics hub for global companies

A bevy of commercial development around the Dayton International Airport is turning the area into a hub for logistics, manufacturing and distribution.

In the last few years, several businesses have established operations on airport land, including consumer goods distributors Procter & Gamble and Spectrum Brands — a pair of massive corporations that ship products across the world.

"If you look at a company like Spectrum Brands, this is the only facility in the U.S. where they're doing manufacturing of their STP car products," said Dayton International Airport Director Terry Slaybaugh. "They're able to serve all of their customers from here. With P&G, their building provides product to every one of their customers in the U.S."

Dayton airport's terminal reconstruction project enters final phase

A massive reconstruction project at the Dayton International Airport is entering its final phase, with new amenities to be added in the coming weeks.

New developments included in the project's last phase will be a new concierge and information desk, as well as a "We Proudly Brew Starbucks'Aviator Joe Cafe" kiosk near the center entrance of the airport, which will be available in the next few weeks.

In July, the center island drive lanes will reopen as well as a glass shelter that will house valet parking. In the end, the airport says travelers will "finally get to see the new and improved terminal in all its glory, providing a beautiful tribute to the Wright brothers in their own hometown."

Report: Dayton airport outlook trending in positive direction

250px-James_M._Cox_Dayton_International_

The outlook for Dayton International Airport is trending in a positive direction, according to a new rating from analytics firm S&P Global.

In a report released earlier this month, S&P Global Ratings revised its outlook from negative to stable. The revised rating signifies the airport is improving, though challenges remain.

The independent, third-party assessment acknowledges the vulnerability DAY has as a small airport with tough competition, but credits the revision in large part to airport management and the region’s strong economic activity.

“The outlook revision reflects our view that DAY’s enplanement levels are stabilizing after year-over-year declines since 2013,” S&P Global Analysts Kevin Archer and Joseph Pezzimenti stated in the report. "Our assessment of the enterprise risk profile as adequate reflects DAY’s very strong service area economic fundamentals, low industry risk, vulnerable market position, and strong management and governance.”

The first phase of the terminal improvements, redesigning the facade and pick-up/drop-off area, looks great. I especially like the flattened curb/bollard approach, so it's easy to roll a suitcase between the driveway and sidewalk. Would be cool if the city would explore a similar design for 5th Street in the Oregon and/or St. Anne's Hill (with appropriately tasteful bollards for those areas). Cincinnati did that on Short Vine, but peculiarly left the street corners raised. (And their choice of bollards is rather questionable, bit I digress.)

Dayton airport the top landing spot for new airline

The Dayton International Airport has been identified as one of the top landing spots for a new airline.

A new report from OAG, a provider of travel data and insight, found Dayton to be the largest unserved market north of Florida with 159 one-way travelers. Based on this finding, OAG pegged the Dayton airport as a prime location for Breeze Airways — a planned airline expected to begin operations later this year.

The report indicated a specific route the new airline could employ, from the Orlando International Airport to the Dayton International Airport. Three other routes — from Jacksonville, Florida to Richmond, Virginia; Jacksonville to Buffalo, New York; and Miami to Buffalo — also were listed in the report.

Positive travel signs abound at Dayton International Airport

The summer traveling season is in full effect, including increased travel activity out of the Dayton International Airport.

After months of sharp travel declines during the Covid-19 pandemic, air travel is beginning to rebound. The nationwide resurgence of air travel is showing promising signs for Dayton's economy.

The Dayton International Airport reported 37,747 passenger enplanements in April — its highest point in more than a year. That number represents a dramatic 1005.7% increase as compared to April 2020 when only 3,414 passengers boarded planes.

“Traffic is rebounding earlier than expected," said Gil Turner, Dayton's director of aviation. “We continue to monitor our weekly and monthly passenger traffic and see a consistent steady increase."

Updates and highlights at Dayton International Airport

If it’s been a while since you’ve been to the airport, you may have missed some of their newest updates. Here’s the latest.

*Restaurant and concessions news

As the airport welcomes more travelers, food and beverage and other retail services are preparing to return. The 12th Fairway Bar and Grill is set to reopen this week with limited hours while the MVP Bar and Grill expects to reopen with limited hours in the next couple of months.

The illy coffee kiosk, the Wright Stop Travel Mart, and the Dayton Marketplace are also planning to resume operations this summer. Max & Erma’s, Great American Bagel, and the CNBC Shop are currently open.

The airport terminal had two Starbucks, but both closed early in the pandemic and will not return. However, coffee will now be found at the New Dunkin’ that is expected to open in the fourth quarter of this year and will fill the space that was previously Boston Stoker beyond the TSA checkpoint.

Dayton International Airport plans major renovation project to enhance public circulation, functionality

The airport announced Thursday it will renovate six areas, including the TSA checkpoint. Here is a breakdown of each enhancement.

  • TSA checkpoint renovation: The existing checkpoint area will be totally renovated, including expansion of the hallway exit lane and recomposure area to accommodate more travelers and lanes. The former CNBC shop will become part of the recomposure area, and the entire checkpoint area will receive new terrazzo flooring or carpeting and new ceilings, column covers, lighting, HVAC and wall finishes.
  • Elevator renovation: The older elevators in concourses A and B will be renovated, including new machinery, new cab finishes and controls, and related upgrades and code compliance modifications.
  • Roof replacement: The improvement includes approximately 150,000 square feet of new silicone-based coating/granule roofing materials over terminals areas, the central concourse and concourses A and B.
  • Window replacement: Existing windows in concourse A will be replaced with larger storefront system openings. This improvement will include interior and exterior painting of walls near the windows.
  • Cooling tower replacements: The airport is served by two aging cooling towers sitting on an elevated steel frame and connected to building piping through tunnels. These towers will be replaced with two new, open-circuit, induced-draft, crossflow cooling towers to include new piping, power and controls, and a modified steel frame supporting the new units.
  • Brick masonry pointing: The brick on the north side of the baggage tunnel bridge and the roof of the aircraft rescue and firefighting house will undergo mortar repair.

New study reveals Dayton had the steepest airfare spike in the U.S. from 2021 to 2022

Dayton had the steepest airfare spike over the last year, according to a new study. The increase comes as travel demand and ticket prices return to pre-pandemic levels.

CheapAir.com published its first year-over-year airfare study to uncover how much the cost of domestic flights have increased compared to this time last year. It compared 128 million airfares in markets across the United States.

Dayton topped the list with a 42% airfare increase from last year to this year, costing travelers around $109 more for each airline ticket. Two other Ohio cities — Akron (No. 6) and Cincinnati (No. 7) — also made the list, as did Flint, Michigan (No. 2); Greensboro, North Carolina (No. 3); Des Moines, Iowa (No. 4); Spokane, Washington (No. 5); Little Rock, Arkansas (No. 8); West Palm Beach, Florida (No. 9); and Grand Rapids, Michigan (No. 10).

They're trying to take the Cincinnati market, but using DAY instead. Also, its 2x per WEEK, not 2x per DAY.

Gotcha, love when the business courier writes it up incorrectly. I thought 2x per week seemed more reasonable than 2x a day. Thanks for clarification. I dont think 2x a week will pull alot from CVG though, with Allegiant, Frontier, SWA, and Delta all offer flights to Orlando from CVG.

Yeah, and I think the 1, 2, 3x per week flights are a pain in the butt--and can only work for people with a lot of flexibility. If you have to change your return, you may have to wait 2-4 days? No thank you!

Soon-to-be-completed $5.6M Dayton airport phase focuses on calming the chaos

The next phase of work at the Dayton International Airport is approaching completion, enabling a more inviting atmosphere for flyers.

The airport, which has seen revitalization efforts over the last few years, is set to welcome flyers into its new and improved TSA and security area.

The $5.7 million project, to be completed by general contractor Setterlin, was designed by local architect LWC Incorporated.

LWC Partner and Director of Design John Fabelo said the project will impact how people feel and behave in the airport as well as what they take away from the experience and in tandem Dayton.

“Everybody that comes to the community that doesn't know the value and what we have to offer is going to judge us by that experience of arriving at the airport going through the building,” Fabelo said. “That's what they take away.”

Sierra Nevada unveils Aviation Innovation Technology Center in Dayton, talks what's next

A year ago, Sierra Nevada Corp. (SNC) previously selected Dayton for two aircraft maintenance repair and overhaul facilities. With one facility already completed and operational and the construction of the other underway, this is just the beginning of SNC’s impact on Dayton.

The SNC Aviation Innovation and Technology Center (AITC), located at Dayton International Airport, celebrated a ribbon cutting earlier this month. The 100,000-square-foot facility is the first large aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility constructed in the Dayton region since WWII and is capable of supporting some of the largest aviation projects in the world—some of which are currently underway.

Part of the investment with the AITC included the creation of 150 jobs. The hiring process already has begun and those efforts remain ongoing; the company anticipates this process to continue for at least the next 18 months. Positions that will need to be filled range from avionics and structural technicians to A&P mechanics.

Here's how airfares are trending in Dayton compared to other major Ohio metros

When airline travel roared back to life after the pandemic, fares rose quickly. But by summer 2023, domestic fares, especially for non-premium seats, started to sink as international travel surged.

As the trend has largely continued nationally, Ohio metro areas are no different. Compared to other cities in the state, Dayton retains the second highest air fare. Passengers over the last year are up across Ohio as costs begin to fall.

That's according to a recent Business Journals analysis of year-over-year third quarter airfare data from Cirium Inc., which showed domestic, one-way fares in Dayton dropped 11.9% between 2022 and 2023.

Dayton witnessed the most significant increase in passengers over the last year while airfares took the second highest drop - followed by Clevelands 14% airfare drop. Take a look at how Dayton stacked up against Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati in airfare and passenger data.
