From Dayton Daily News

DAYTON — The Dayton International Airport's administration plans to break ground on Sept. 17 for a new air traffic control tower that will cost at least $30 million and won't be operational until 2010.  The airport's administration is planning an 11 a.m. ground-breaking ceremony for that day and will invite regional officials, airport spokesman Gene Conrad said Monday.

The federal government pays the full cost for the new control tower.  It will replace the current one built in 1961.  The project is part of the government's effort to replace obsolete equipment nationwide in an air traffic control system straining to handle increased numbers of flights and air travelers.

The Federal Aviation Administration estimates that the Dayton tower will cost $30.6 million, not including equipment and furnishings.  Construction is to be completed in 2009, but the tower won't be operational until the summer of 2010 while electronic and security equipment is installed and tested, FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Cory said.

New flight from Dayton to Myrtle Beach set

Staff Report

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

DAYTON — Southern Skyways, a scheduled public charter operated by Primaris Airlines, will begin seasonal nonstop jet service between Dayton International Airport and Myrtle Beach, S.C., in May.  The flights will begin on May 23 and operate through Labor Day, airport officials said Wednesday.

Service will be offered on Fridays and Mondays with fares ranging from $79 to $129 each way, depending on availability.  Southern Skyways is offering an initial promotion deal in which, for families which book reservations by Feb. 29, a child 12 or under can fly free when accompanied by an adult paying full fare.

In March 2007, Southern Skyways announced plans to start low-fare service from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to Myrtle Beach and to Charleston, W.Va.  But the airline never began that service and canceled those plans in May 2007 because of low bookings for the service.

By John Nolan, Staff Writer

DAYTON — Air Canada is returning to Dayton International Airport to offer two non-stop daily flights to Toronto beginning July 15, city officials said on Tuesday, May 20.  The flights to Toronto Pearson International Airport will be operated using 18-seat, Beech 1900 D aircraft, said Iftikahr Ahmad, Dayton's Aviation Director.

Major changes in store for Dayton International Airport

By John Nolan, Staff Writer

Tuesday, May 27, 2008

DAYTON — Coming to the Dayton International Airport: change.  In late June, the airport will start hosting live music acts in the lobby of the airport's main terminal building, with solo acts and bands to perform in a space near the main entry door.

By the end of 2010, a three-story parking garage is to be built right outside the terminal building's front door in a $40 million project.  Its first level will be entirely devoted to car rental agencies, with the second and third floors to offer a total of 1,400 spaces for public parking.  The garage's construction, to be funded by airport revenues and user fees paid by customers who rent cars at the airport, is to begin in spring 2009.

The airport has begun designing a major renovation of the public lobby space that will remove baggage screening machines that will be relocated in what will be a newly constructed rear section of the building.  Construction is to start in 2009 and be done by mid-2010.

AirTran has ended Dayton-Las Vegas direct flights

By John Nolan

Staff Writer

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

DAYTON — AirTran Airways has ended the Dayton-to-Las Vegas direct air service it started last year, because the increased prices of jet fuel have made the route unprofitable, a spokeswoman for the airline said on Wednesday, May 28.

Iftikhar Ahmad, who oversees Dayton International Airport as Dayton's director of aviation, said AirTran had notified the airport of its decision and that the airline could reconsider if fuel prices were to decline later on.  The Dayton-Las Vegas flights were popular last year, Ahmad said.

AirTran ended the Dayton-Las Vegas service in April.  Graham-Weaver said the airline is also ending direct Las Vegas service from Bloomington, Ill.; Akron-Canton, Ohio; Moline, Ill.; Flint, Mich., Rochester, N.Y.  AirTran will continue its direct service to Las Vegas from Indianapolis, Milwaukee and Atlanta.

Dayton airport to start music offerings

By John Nolan, Staff Writer

Friday, June 13, 2008

DAYTON — Montgomery County's economic development director and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company are among the first music acts planned when the Dayton International Airport starts up its schedule of live music in the lobby of the terminal building.  Joe Tuss, the county official, said he plans to appear solo at the airport for the June 27 startup of the live music, although he is a guitar player in a trio called the Jaywalkers that performs twice a month at Cafe Boulevard, an Oregon District nightspot.

Iftikhar Ahmad, who manages the airport as Dayton's director of aviation, has been organizing the addition of live music as part of what he has said is an effort to make the airport a more pleasant environment.  Ahmad said the schedules for the live music acts are still being worked out, but he hopes for regular performances, at least during weekdays.  Ahmad has said the airport plans to feature performers from local and regional arts groups and bands.

Dayton airport to lose its only direct international flight

By John Nolan, Staff Writer

Updated 9:36 PM Thursday, March 31, 2011

DAYTON — Air Canada’s decision to end flight service to Toronto from Dayton International Airport is a sign of the times, when airlines are reducing flights wherever possible as rising fuel prices squeeze profits.

The move costs Dayton International its only direct, scheduled commercial service to an international destination. About 60 percent of the Dayton airport’s passengers are business travelers, and the flight to Toronto provided an opportunity for them to connect at Air Canada’s Toronto hub with flights to Asia and Europe.

Air Canada will end its Dayton-to-Toronto service on May 1.

Read more at: http://www.daytondailynews.com/business/dayton-airport-to-lose-its-only-direct-international-flight-1123214.html

That has to suck. Will they have to rename the airport?

Ohio needs to do something about it;s transportation needs.

The move costs Dayton International its only direct, scheduled commercial service to an international destination.

Canada is international? okay..  (If DAY has any customs/immigration, its not because of this flight due to US pre-clearance at YYZ.)

That has to suck. Will they have to rename the airport?
you meaning dropping 'international'? No--its just a name. Erie, PA has no int'l service yet it is "Erie International". LGA serves Aruba and the Bahamas on weekends, but its not "LaGuardia International". Cleveland Burke Lakefront has international capabilities (including customs) but, like LaGuardia, does not have "international" in its name.

That has to suck. Will they have to rename the airport?

Ohio needs to do something about it;s transportation needs.

The reason why it's Dayton International Airport is because the airport provides U.S. customs.

Start-up Las Vegas airline targets Dayton airport

By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer  Updated 12:01 PM Wednesday, April 13, 2011

DAYTON — Dayton International Airport is among more than a dozen airports that start-up luxury airline, LV Air, has identified as a potential port for direct flights to and from Las Vegas.

The charter carrier is signing leases for jetliners and raising capital to begin flying from at least three airports this fall, said Bryan Glazer, a spokesman for the company.

LV plans to soon contact Dayton airport officials to gauge interest in the airline, which would offer Boeing 767 non-stop jet service between the local airport and McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas.

Dayton airport pursues extra $4.4M for upgrade

Unused concourse would be demolished for plane parking spaces.

By John Nolan, Staff Writer

8:12 PM Wednesday, December 28, 2011

DAYTON — Dayton International Airport’s management wants to use $7.1 million of federal money to demolish an idle concourse and create more space for overnight parking of airliners.

The approximately $7.5 million project would involve razing the airport’s Concourse D, which has been idle since the early 1990s and was once the home of a Piedmont Airlines hub.

The goal is to increase ramp space for parking planes that airlines use for morning departures.

This thread has been dead for what, about two years. Did Southwest bring the prosperity they promised to the Dayton Airport? Come-on, Daytonians, chime in.

I've taken Southwest a few times LAX-DAY via Denver. The connections are good, especially going east. Lately I've been taking United because it's cheaper (yup) and for the frequent flyer miles. Connecting in ORD is occasionally a nightmare. There's a really nice LAX-DEN-DAY route on United too but it's always more expensive for some reason and the DEN-DAY flight is a long one in a tiny plane.

Anyway, it's nice having Southwest to add some competition even if I'm not flying them right now. Looking back at my old receipts, I'm now paying less to go LAX-DAY than I was paying to go STL-DAY in 2007.

Dayton International Airport has added a new flight to its departure schedule.

United Airlines will begin a daily non-stop flight between Houston and Dayton starting June 7. Dayton is one of just eight cities chosen by United to receive new non-stop routes as part of the airline's extended flight schedule.

"We are extremely excited about United's decision to bring additional service to Dayton," said Terry Slaybaugh, director of aviation for the city of Dayton and the airport's director. "Our passengers and business community will benefit from the convenience of this new nonstop flight to Houston. We are proud to be a part of United Airline's plans to provide optimal service to its customers."

The Dayton International Airport is seeing a surge of development in the area that surrounds the facility, and now the region's travel hub is setting its sights on a new hotel.

One of the airport's main goals in 2018 is to sign an agreement with a developer to build a hotel on the property. DIA has not had an adjacent hotel since 2010.

Airport Director Terry Slaybaugh wants that to change soon.

Dayton airport to offer new concierge service

A new concierge service will be available to all passengers and guests at the Dayton International Airport by May, following approval by the Dayton City Commission.

The goal of the concierge team is to be "interactive" with patrons while they are at the airport, according to airport director Terry Slaybaugh.

"The concierge employees will engage with the public as they arrive at the terminal, offering assistance and guidance with information about the airport, their travel needs, the Dayton community and more," Slaybaugh said. "The team will circulate through the entire pre-security parts of the terminal and parking structures, including greeting those passengers exiting the terminal to baggage claim."
