Posted January 13, 201411 yr My girlfriend is a registered nurse who now has a little more free time after graduating college. She works 3 twelve hour shifts a week, so naturally, she'd like something to fill that extra time and wants to give back to this great city by volunteering. If anyone has any suggestions to help her out, it would be much appreciated. Doesn't have to be healthcare related. Here are her preferences. Within the city of Cleveland (preferably west side or downtown) Easily accessible by public transit. Something cleveland related. She wants to be a part of the awesome momentum of the city. So stray away from soup kitchens, animal shelters, etc. Thanks guys!

January 13, 201411 yr I would see what she can find through BVU. I believe individuals can volunteer there as well as via their companies: https://volunteer.truist.com/bvu-3/volunteer/
January 13, 201411 yr Thanks guys. She is not against medical related firms but would prefer something different such as community gardens, community development corporations, community outreach, etc.
January 13, 201411 yr http://www.handsonneo.org/ - has many volunteer opportunities across many different social service agencies and many of these are on evenings and weekends
January 14, 201411 yr Thanks guys. She is not against medical related firms but would prefer something different such as community gardens, community development corporations, community outreach, etc. Would she be interested in being a liaison for All Aboard Ohio with the city, ODOT, CDCs, medical institutions, etc. on two projects we're working on here? 1. Transit service adjustments and Transit Oriented Development in the Opportunity Corridor http://allaboardohio.org/2014/01/09/odot-urged-to-add-transit-tod-in-clevelands-opportunity-corridor/ 2. Red Line/HealthLine extension to Euclid and beyond http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,26445.0.html and http://www.riderta.com/majorprojects/redlinehealthlineextension "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
January 14, 201411 yr Does DCA have volunteers? I know the 'ambassadors' are paid, but I thought they also had a volunteer component. If it was me with the free time, I would call the CMSD. The school district is constantly looking for ways to offer more after school and extracurricular activities for the kids. I did something a several years back and still loosely keep in contact with a few of the kids, who are adults now.

It's sort of a project-based program, but Advocates get a lot of emails about volunteering for various events (Sparx, Winterfest, etc.)
January 14, 201411 yr Thanks everyone! I will relay some of these suggestions to her ^We are both applying for the City Advocates program. It is a pretty intense selection process, but I am very excited and hope to be able to take part.
