brooklyn college is located pretty much in the middle of brooklyn and i to go out there to see interns recently, so afterward i took a walk around the athletic field to see if i could spot the locally famous monk parrots. apparantly they escaped and have been living in the field light posts for many years.

i found them busy chasing flocks of pigeons and other birds around. they are very noisy and very fast. they like to swoop around and dive bomb the other poor birds. i had the area all to myself and it was quite a sight. i couldnt get good pictures of them at all, but it was a lot of fun to watch them in action.

you could see the nests up in the lightposts.

note you can also see parrots in green-wood cemetary and lief ericsson park in brooklyn.

anyway, its a cute, quirky immigrant story. i dont know anything about birds, but considering the weather these parrots are a lot tougher than i would have thought.

Well THAT'S interesting.

Who knew?

The playground fencing is also a good way to scare away mice, pigeons, etc....

Quaker Parrots.  I used to have one of those as a pet.  It was extremely obnoxious.  I can't imagine how annoying a whole flock of them would be.

Can you imagine their language?  In Brooklyn?

Why did these birds not have their wings clipped before being shipped here?  Was that not standard practice in the 60s?  Is it now?

The birds are illegal in many states but legal in others if they have their wings clipped and are registered with the state. According to Wikipedia the birds in Brooklyn likely originated from black market birds.
