One problem I see is that as our nightlife districts increasingly overlap with our upscale urban residential areas, it is going to create more conflicts.  The Warehouse District, East 4th, and W. 25th aren't the old Flats (and the new Flats won't be either).  People live near them, and don't really want the sort of issues that seem to pop up around dance oriented nightclubs compared to more low key places.  I think that those sorts of places are going to need to find a new "strip" away from residential, or need to get better at crowd control inside and around their venues.

I've always thought St. Clair, between 13th and the 20's would be the perfect strip for this. A nice urban wall on both sides with plenty of available space! Vada picked up on it! (Though, I know residents at the Avenue weren't too happy about it)

Well actually that was one of the stated goals of the owner of Vada when he opened it. He said he wanted to create another club district right there because of all of the available space there. He wants a Miami style nightclub district there and hopes that other club owners start opening up establishments there. He's really aggressively gone after the celebrity clientele since he opened Vada and he's gotten them. That's what he wants that whole strip to look like

But isn't Vada just the former GRID?

But isn't Vada just the former GRID?

yes, the owner took that, turned it into Vada, put a lot of money in the building and so far its been working for him, judging by the large crowds and the amount of local and national celebs that come

Owner hopes new Vada nightclub can make St. Clair a new hot spot

Cleveland's night-life scene is like a leopard's coat -- a spot of activity here and there and there and here, with empty spaces in between. The spots are usually named after streets: West Sixth, East Fourth, West 25th. Well, Chris King is hoping to turn an empty space into a spot -- one called St. Clair.

A few people I know are in control of a liquor license and have approached me for either inclusion in the next venture or at least for ideas.  I would like to be Downtown or in Ohio City.  I have begun reaching out to commercial real estate brokers to see what types of spaces are available and at what price points etc.  Anyone have any experience with bar/nightlife ownership or know some who does?

I think Punch could be a resource. I know at one point he was involved in (building) a bar business in Chicago.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The sound of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" blasting out of a radio as workers prepared the dance club for its return said it all: Bounce is bouncing back.

The iconic gay club will reopen on Friday.

The near West Side spot -- 2814 Detroit Ave., Cleveland -- shut down in January after a 13-year run, leaving the gay and drag scenes lamenting the closing of one of the area's longest-running clubs.

It's a very good thing that Toby Keith's I love this Bar and Grill got halted and never went any further based on the story that was linked through Cleveland seen magazine.

http://www.azcentral.com/story/money/business/consumers/2015/09/30/toby-keiths-i-love-this-bar-and-grill-closings/71916554/

It's great that the developers can now find a better suited restaurant operator for that halted building.

http://m.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2015/10/01/toby-keiths-officially-not-opening-in-flats-and-theres-good-reason-for-that

Wow. Looks like we did dodge a bullet with that. I find it interesting that Keith is only paid naming rights and doesn't have an ownership stake.

The Leader Bar closed a few weeks ago due to the soon to be started office to apartment construction.

Now that is a loss.  Great food, decent beer selection, cool space.  Gonna miss Leader Bar.

Are they definitely closed for good? I spoke to the owner of Leader Bar (probably like 6 or 7 months ago) and he said he was planning on renovating and possibly expanding.

OK, I'm not the only geezer who remembers it as the Olive Tree.

Hell, I remember it as the Olive Tree.  My brother and his wife played there numerous times and he hosted a couple slam poetry events there.

Bellflower was north-side fraternity row back then, and the beer age in Ohio was 19.  It had a largely Greek crowd, and no I don't mean they served ouzo.

Cleveland Somehow Named Fifth Best American City for Nightlife in New Report

Posted By Laura Morrison on Fri, Jan 4, 2019 at 12:02 PM

Cleveland's nightlife scene is so hot right now, at least according to the Apartment Guide blog's new Top 10 Best Cities For Nightlife in America list.

The blog, which unsurprisingly helps apartment hunters find apartments, compared the ratio of people to the number of music spots, bars, breweries and clubs to come up with their results.

well vtr being sold sure caught my eye in the paper today. the cross country mortgage gang bought it, so i think its going to be ok.

i hope paulius got out from whatever weight he was under with it while it was closed up for corona. he’s a legend — wish him well.

vtr is one of the greats and one of the very first retro speakeasy style cocktail bars.

According to the article, Paulius wasn’t very nice to the reporter, lol.

I had a bad experience at VTR years ago and I emailed Paulius and he was very generous in correcting the situation.

^ ha yeah as i recall paulius is a bit quirky for sure, a lot of personality. he used to join us on the old cle food forum i got to know him a little bit there back then and at the bar. and needless to say he is quite an impressive pioneer -- so no doubt this situation is a touchy issue. my hat is off to him for keeping the great vibe at vtr all these years.

so i wonder if he will still be involved? i think paulius made the place by force of will, if not no doubt it will change at least somewhat, but looks like it will be ok.

New owner Aaron Westerburg says he’s uncertain of the plans for the building, which he closed on for a mere $60,000. He realizes the rich history of the building and is open-minded to investment opportunities or concepts for the property.

The  proximity to the Towpath opens up a lot more daytime options for the venue. Would love to see the music continue, with renovations that still keep the bar area as much the same as possible. It's just so cool and "new" places just don't have the same aura.

New Frozen Daiquiri Bar coming to Cleveland's Flats

A new bar is planning to open its doors in the Cleveland Flats soon, but potential patrons will still have to wait a little bit longer.

is still finishing up construction on its location at 1313 Old River Rd. across the street from where 1330 On the River just reopened its doors earlier this week.

Now that its previous Instagram-pronounced opening window of summer 2021 has passed, the restaurant is now seeking to open around Halloween time. Contractors working on renovating the building said that they expect to finish up construction by the second week of October.
