The space is set to open in December, according to a press release.

“We’ve been working on this for a while and I’m excited to finally let everyone in on the secret,” Rice said in a press release. “I’ve had a blast learning about another side of the entertainment and hospitality industry and getting to put my stamp on things at Welcome to the Farm. Expansion planned for Cleveland Flats bars Good Night John Boy and Welcome to the Farm

When the bar Good Night John Boy opened in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic last year, Forward Hospitality Group CEO Michael Schwartz was hoping that Cleveland's Flats would be accepting to the concept, which is based off of his childhood basement.

"The design is where I focus a lot of my energy," Schwartz said.

Now after finding success in The Flats, Schwartz is expecting to take both Good Night John Boy and soon-to-open country-themed bar Welcome to the Farm into other territories.

"We’re close to signing a second deal in the Tampa Bay area of Florida," Schwartz said. "We know from looking at statistics that Ohio and Florida are a good fit for country music."

Compass cocktail lounge in the Flats nears opening — a year later than planned

Compass, a cocktail lounge planned as an extension of 1330 On The River, plans to open this summer in the lower floors of the historic Frank Morrison & Son Co. Building.

Originally planned for last summer, a number of construction-related delays have thrown the project in the lower floors of the building off schedule.

Demolition of the downstairs has just been completed, said Zeek Khan, the owner of the 1330 On The River.

Frozen Daiquiri Bar sets timeline for opening in the Cleveland Flats

People waiting to visit the Frozen Daiquiri Bar and Restaurant in Cleveland's Flats will have to wait just a little while longer.

It's a strange place in a good way. It's an absolute dive bar with an A+ vegan kitchen (my wife and I are both vegan, her for animals, me for stomach issues). On top of that it has the world's smallest stage where they have live concerts (including punk concerts) where the room between bar and tables is maybe eight feet. You can only imagine how that gets. It is definitely a top five eclectic place in Cleveland.

Did I mention it's at the top of an industrial dead end street? You get the oddest gathering of people there that otherwise wouldn't end up in the same space together.

^ Sweet. Will absolutely check that out, thanks!

Just one more reason to really develop the waterfront. Give people something to do and they'll do it lol.

Spotted Owl to close, re-open as La Cave Du Vin, then relocate

The Spotted Owl has closed and will be converted to La Cave Du Vin this summer, and the cocktail bar eventually is scheduled to reopen in the former Lolita space in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood, its owners have announced.

The cocktail bar, at 710 Jefferson Ave., is slated to re-open in its new concept by the end of summer as the previous longtime Coventry bar that closed in 2018.

“The Spotted Owl just wrapped up its best-ever year, both in revenue and profit. But I’m bored. I’m bored with cocktails right now - but I won’t be forever. I love bars. I never get bored of bars, especially my bars,” Spotted Owl founder Will Hollingsworth, who heads up Buildings and Food hospitality group, said in a press release announcing the changes.

😭😭😭 This is a travesty, and doomed to failure. One of the few places in downtown Cleveland that regularly plays live music is pivoting away from live music towards DJ'd music. Apparently live music is less popular than recorded music in Cleveland. I consider that an indictment of the average citizen. I'm not happy, the best reason to visit the flats is effectively closing up by giving up on its raison d'etre. Their halfway plan isn't going to work. I'd bet within a year the bar is either closed entirely, or will fully transition to yet another lame club.

https://www.crainscleveland.com/restaurants/big-bang-dueling-piano-bar-rebrand-flats

"Dall's plan is for the bar to still run a piano show from around 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. “in hopes to keep a lot of our old customer base” before switching over to the DJs later in the evening.

The bar will be remodeled and rethemed in the six weeks it's closed, adopting a 1980s style. The structure will mostly stay the same, Dall said, but the plan is for smaller piano shells on the stage so there is room for a permanent DJ booth as well."

I forgot they have a picture of Bobby Sands behind the bar. One of the few bars in town with solid links back to the old country.

I remember being in high school around 2006-2007, and a group of my friends met at the Flat Iron after practice to get wings and watch a Cavs game, and there was a RIRA/NORAID collection basket on the bar, with a man from Derry there to encourage donations.

Dueling pianos was kind of a fad.   It's got to be tough to maintain that theme exclusively.   His earlier show is likely meant to appeal to older people.

There's still a ton of places doing live music, though unlike in the past it's mainly on the weekends.  In my area alone there's the Beachland, the Treelawn, Cebars, Diamondbacks, Sound Stage, and occasionally Millard Fillmore.   I am sure others, and other parts of thew area of course.   My brother is in two active bands and two semi active.

It's younger people that are moving away from it, though by no means all.   Kelly's an exception, despite our age canyon I swear she's more into old school live music than I am.   Holly was often into classic rock too, though she's been gone awhile.   Even our daughter (14) is into older stuff sometimes.  But for the most part, it's mostly just hip hop or electronic that doesn't always translate well to live venues....or might as well be DJs.

That said, I think the key to what you are talking about is "downtown".  That's a more expensive place to do business.   Cheaper rent means more money to pay bands.

dueling pianos was definitely a national fad, although there is a new orleans history to it. i remember when they starting popping up in downtowns everywhere by the early 1990s, but it seems most eventually faded away. wiki sez:  The modern format originated in late 1986 at Alley Cats in Dallas.

i would guess its too expensive to run these days? i mean two pianos and paying the talent is alot. heck you can’t even find a ‘classy joint’ with a solo piano player noodling around anymore (ie., sokolowskis/rip).

That randomly reminds me of Mabel O'Brien's, an Irish bar/restauarant in Strongsville around the corner from where I worked.    Corned beef comparable to Tal's (also in that area at the time) and good food in general.   But OMG the decor shocked even me.   Let's just say it wasn't designed to make what we today call POC (I don't mean the beer) comfortable.

Ironically I was in the area awhile back and it's now a Mexican restaurant.
