It’s because of the business traffic from conventions and trade shows, everyone in their brother has to go to one during those for some reason.

Steakhouses (and golf) seem to be the unwritten rule about conducting business outside of work. Probably because it can be expensed without much fuss.

I was really putting my money on this showing up at the Peninsula, but I guess AD makes sense too.

I feel like the Peninsula has a different vibe going for it than chain steakhouse. It'd be nice to have a high-end, national concept like Smith & Wollensky in the Peninsula development to add to the variety in the area, but this likely does fit better closer to the convention center. Plus it gives the Hyatt a marquee dining option to compete with the Hilton across the way.

Not really development news, but this is a good sign. Hopefully it means they push forward with another new hotel soon.

Downtown Columbus Hilton and Convention Center exceed revenue projections in 2024

The Hilton benefited from the December College Football Playoff Game between Ohio State and the Tennessee Volunteers played at Ohio Stadium. The hotel saw strong bookings around the game.

As a result, revenue for the state's largest 1,000-room hotel came in $503,000 higher than forecasted as the playoff game wasn't something the Hilton budgeted for.

Total revenue for the hotel in 2024 exceeded its forecast by $4.27 million and year-over-year revenue grew by $12 million, according to the report.

The Hilton does not share exact financial goals.

The hotel also reported 420,000 group room nights booked for upcoming years, surpassing its goal by 18,000 room nights.

The Greater Columbus Convention Center also finished 2024 on a high note, posting a net income of $806,588 – roughly $740,000 above the budgeted $66,535 and $1 million better than the previous year.

However, for 2025, leaders are projecting a $704,133 net operating loss due to rising staff and operational expenses, as well as "different event mix opportunities" that lack ancillary impacts (including food and beverage spending) seen with events such as the African Methodist Episcopal Church conference.

We definitely need another hotel project in the downtown area asap and preferably a tower. If we want to compete with peer cities like Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Detroit, etc we need to keep up.

To be fair, we are building one literally across the street right now:

Correct and with them making it luxury, it should go a long way in helping even more. Still wouldn’t be bad to get another 15 story hotel in the immediate area

I can't imagine the surface parking lot on Goodale and 670 stays undeveloped within the next 10 years. Wonderful spot for a good 20-25 story hotel.

I was referring to a tower solely for hotel rooms like the Hilton, not mixed use.

The Hilton tower was completed in 2022 so I don’t share the same skepticism as you.

Prices were locked in before they really took off and I literally heard that from the horses mouth. You will not see it happen anytime soon. Maybe as part of mixed use, but not dedicated. Not in this market and definitely not here.

Neither of us can predict the future with certainty regarding costs and market trends. However, we can choose whether to be optimistic or pessimistic. I will always choose optimism about Columbus.

What's the chance they ever repaint the entire convention center neutral colors? I mean everything, the roof and all. It's an eyesore.

It looks like those weird Veggie Sticks. It just needs rebuilt. Someone needs to BIM scan the arch as well and recreate the Burnham arcade too.

I like the colors, gives it a nice break from the grey/white of every other building.

Yeah, don't Joanna Gaines that thing LOL!

Perhaps we can repaint to full-on Caribbean colors? Just the absolute brightest, boldest colors you can imagine.

Somebody gets it!

I like it, colors and all. It’s not hiding it’s a convention center, yet fits in with the streetscape. It adds an artistic flair. Besides, it you paint it neutral, doesn’t it just become The Nicholas North? 😉

I would go with neutral colors but to each their own I guess. Even if you keep the colors the same, it still needs repainted.

Saw the article, it seems fair. The architects didn’t provide certain renderings until 3 years after promised which caused delays and cost overruns

The University of Cincinnati went through this within the last 10 years with their DAAP building, also by Peter Eisenmann. It was falling apart and they ended up recladding the entire exterior in metal panels instead of EIFS. There was a debate about making the whole thing aluminum-colored panels but they ended up matching the original color scheme (similar to the convention center) in the new material.

Designs Unveiled for Downtown North Market Expansion

North Market will start construction to expand its downtown Columbus location next year.

The expansion will include multiple new merchant stalls, a Market-owned bar concept, and additional seating, restrooms and storage on the first floor.

The second floor will feature a facility dedicated to events and programming. The facility will have a covered balcony overlooking the new outdoor plaza.

The 15,000-square-foot addition will be on the east side of the market, as a part of the 32-story mixed used Merchant Building tower. The new area will be centered around a Market-owned bar concept, with spaces for five-to-seven new vendors around the bar’s perimeter. The expansion will also include an additional guest common room and seating and a second story event space for “state-of-the-art dedicated events” overlooking the new outdoor market plaza.
