August 20, 201410 yr Considering we've been hearing about it for well over a decade, I was really expecting something more substantial.
August 20, 201410 yr That would look great in front of an EIFS church in Obetz. Jeez obetz just has that one old church that I know of. Now refugee between 33 and eastland mall has that stuff in spades near the dead putt-putt and the old frank's nursery.
August 20, 201410 yr Hope that is a joke. Nice photoshopping! Haha! So am I not the only one who is disappointed by this "tower?" This looks like a very cheap homage to the Salvation Army. What was the budget for this? Forty dollars? All of Ohio should be very proud.
November 7, 201410 yr Hot Chicken Takeover to Pop-Up Inside North Market for The Winter By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground November 6, 2014 - 1:19 pm In the short amount of time since their launch earlier this year, Hot Chicken Takeover has quickly become a local favorite. The restaurant’s outdoor summertime setup lends itself well to community-centric picnic luncheons, but does not work quite as well during the colder months. That problem gets solved today, as HCT owner Joe DeLoss has announced plans to operate inside The North Market from December through May of next year. “We have been searching for options to keep operations running through the winter and North Market was such a perfect match,” says DeLoss. “It shares the same mission of community, food and connection. I approached the Market and they had a temporary space available in the NoMa Kitchen and I seized the opportunity.” The NoMa Kitchen is located upstairs on the south end of the building. The space was once home to Braddock’s Diner, but has operated as event space since the diner closed several years ago. With the space formerly operating as a restaurant, it lends itself well to hosting a pop-up concept like Hot Chicken Takeover. November 21, 201410 yr Are they starting the parking structure already? I've used the parking lot to take photos of the Joseph Hotel before and when I went there 2 weeks ago saw it was closed and there was a crane being setup.
November 23, 201410 yr Little Eater Opening Inside The North Market By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground November 11, 2014 - 1:22 pm The North Market announced their newest tenant today with the addition of Little Eater, a locally-based healthy food vendor that has been popping up inside local grocers for the past few years. Owner and Chef Cara Mangini is no stranger to the North Market, with her products having already been for sale through the Greener Grocer. (. . .) The addition of Little Eater will bring the North Market back to 100-percent occupancy following a year of construction and relocation of vendors throughout the building. December 29, 201410 yr Greener Grocer closing at North Market, new tenant lined up By Dan Eaton, Staff reporter Columbus Business First - Dec 10, 2014, 4:08pm EST The North Market is getting a new produce provider. The market, which last month filled its last open stall, will have another space open up, though it won't be vacant for long. The Greener Grocer will close Dec. 31, according to a press release from the market. Owner Michael Jones will be putting more focus on Good Food Enterprises, an organization he started a year ago. (. . .) Rick Harrison Wolfe, North Market executive director, said the market is in final negotiations with a produce-selling tenant with a target opening in the spring, just in time for the Ohio growing season. January 14, 201510 yr Columbus looks to dial back support for the North Market Operation made money in 2014 By Lucas Sullivan & JD Malone, The Columbus Dispatch Sunday, January 11, 2015 - 5:41 AM A 20-year lease the City of Columbus signed with the North Market Development Authority, a nonprofit group that oversees the market, is set to expire in November. A new lease is being negotiated, and both sides know it won’t be nearly as generous as the last. Still, the City wants to sustain what has become a true jewel. Twenty years ago, there was no Arena District or Nationwide Arena, and the Greater Columbus Convention Center was just in its first phase. The success of a reconceived North Market was far from a sure thing. The City charged just $1 a year in rent for the building and parking lot. As landlord, the City also pays for the market’s exterior upkeep and has spent more than $2.2 million for capital improvements in the past two years ($1.2 million was spent on a new ventilation system in 2013 and the market’s roof is being replaced at a cost of more than $1 million). The City wants the next lease to require that the market set aside money to pay for improvements. City officials said they don’t expect the market to be self-sustaining, just less of a drag on the city’s budget. February 24, 201510 yr Convention center expansion wins design approval Plans to expand and modernize the Greater Columbus Convention Center have passed muster with the Downtown Commission, moving the complex closer to a $125 million makeover to improve its competitiveness. A $30 million addition OK'd Tuesday by the commission includes the construction of a 36,000-square-foot exhibition hall off Goodale Street and 10,000 square feet of meeting space split among two levels. February 25, 201510 yr ^ Don't they mean NorthEAST corner of High St? Or am I just backwards? [edit: oh, they must mean northwest corner of the structure, not of the intersection]

February 27, 201510 yr So instead of this: We get this: Disgusting misuse of over $100 million. That could have been spent on that fieldhouse across 3rd. The commissioners who approved this better not be reelected. So short sighted. How's it Wagenbrenner/Rockbridge fault the GCCC built a Hilton with 1/3 of the rooms a view of the inside of a parking garage?
March 11, 201510 yr North Market Expanding Hours of Operation By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground February 25, 2015 - 11:36 am Starting in April, shoppers will be able to spend a little bit more time at The North Market with expanded hours throughout the week. The market will remain open until 7pm on Saturdays and Monday will no longer be an “optional” day for merchants, which in the past has meant a partially-open scenario where half the vendors remained closed. Beginning on April 1st, the North Market will officially be open Sunday and Monday from 10am to 5pm and Tuesday through Saturday from 9am to 7pm. North Market Executive Director Rick Harrison Wolfe says that the expansion of building hours has long been something requested by shoppers. March 18, 201510 yr Question: will the front of the Convention Center along High Street still be a dead zone?
May 20, 201510 yr So Destination Donuts opened this month, and apparently the North Market is down to only one vacancy. I'd say it's time to build that long-rumored expansion! Destination Donuts Opens, North Market Close to Full Occupancy Local favorite Destination Donuts opened this month as the North Market's 32nd vendor, bringing the popular city-owned market very close to enjoying 100% occupancy. Destination Donuts had hosted pop-ups at the market for several years, but as of May 8th now operates a full-time retail shop. Once Little Eater Produce and Provisions opens this summer (replacing The Greener Grocer), the North Market will only have a single vacancy - space which was left empty by the closure of Expressly Market Bakery earlier this year. http://columbusight.com/2015/05/18/destination-donuts-opens-north-market-close-to-full-occupancy/
June 2, 201510 yr Two more bits of good news for the North Market: - The upstairs restaurant, Hot Chicken Takeover, signed a three year lease to stay at the North Market: http://www.columbusunderground.com/hot-chicken-takeover-to-become-permanent-at-north-market - The Ohio Legislature passed a bill making it okay to buy craft beer or wine sold at the North Market and drink it there. Or, as Business First put it in their linked article, "You'll be able to have a beer with your Hot Chicken Takeover". (Prior to this, drinking at the North Market was allowed only during special events.) The sponsors of the bill noted that this would place the North Market on an equal footing with some local grocery stores that also allow customers to drink wine and beer on site: http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/morning_call/2015/05/morning-roundup-legislation-oks-drinking-at-north.html

September 12, 20159 yr Convention center's revamped High Street plaza part of $125 million facelift The renovation and expansion of the Greater Columbus Convention Center has started with a schedule set to end in June 2017. The $75 million investment in renovations and $50 million in expansion costs are designed to make Columbus more competitive and attractive for large, national conventions and trade shows. September 14, 20159 yr Is the sidewalk already that narrow? If I'm not mistaken, it looks like they are building their "plaza gateway" onto what is already a fairly narrow sidewalk along the main drag downtown. Also where did they come up with this $125 million for the convention center all of a sudden? They just financed a $140 million Hilton across the street, for the convention center, granted with some private financing. All of this as residents have been repeatedly told there just isn't any money for fixed transit.
October 14, 20159 yr North Market is Officially “Full” Today with the Opening of Dos Hermanos By Walker Evans, Columbus Underground October 14, 2015 - 12:37 pm The final vacant vendor stall at The North Market is officially filled today as Dos Hermanos opens for business. A series of relocations and mechanical upgrades to the building had vendors changing places while some vendors have left (Pure Imagination, Greener Grocer) and other new ones have joined (Destination Donuts, Stauf’s), so the return to full capacity marks the end of a transitional state for the North Market. February 22, 20169 yr Don't yet have any more recent full-view photos of the Convention Center Parking Garage. But the FCCFA webpage for the project - http://www.meetusincolumbus.com/goodale-st-parking-facility/ - does have an updated rendering for the garage: This rendering is different from previous ones because it shows color fins being used to clad the sides. Previously renderings were gray. Apparently the color fins in the new rendering are accurate and are currently being installed. The construction cam at http://www.meetusincolumbus.com/goodale-st-parking-facility/ shows a low res image of this. And last week, the Dispatch had this image of the color fins on the garage within a general construction article:

September 14, 20168 yr Potentially huge development news for the North Market: City to Solicit Proposals for Developing North Market Parking Lot By Brent Warren, Columbus Underground September 14, 2016 - 6:00 pm The City of Columbus will be releasing a Request for Proposals next month, seeking ideas for developing the North Market parking lot. Although the city does not plan on specifying exactly what should be built on the one-acre lot (or how tall it should be), the level of interest from both local and national developers is likely to be intense. ( . . . ) Development Director Steve Schoeny said that he and North Market Executive Director Rick Harrison Wolfe have been discussing plans for the site off and on for the last three years, since Wolfe first floated some ideas about the future of the market in an interview with Columbus Underground. Developers started approaching both men soon after that article was published, they said. The RFP will not prescribe use or height, but instead rely on the developer to come up with a program that meets the goals of both the city and the market. “With the RFP we want to see if we can accomplish four objectives,” said Schoeny. “To improve the market’s physical space, to improve the market financially, to improve the neighborhood as a whole, and to do all of this while maintaining operations.” MORE: http://www.columbusunderground.com/north-market-parking-lot-development-bw1
September 15, 20168 yr ^ Wow. Potentially huge news indeed. Hoping something big comes out of the RFP and that the city moves forward with it. This could really take the NM and entire mini-district that surrounds it to the next level.
September 15, 20168 yr My wish would be for an underground parking garage with a multi-level market above it. Add in some garage doors that would allow an open air market in nice weather. Get a top notch architect in to give a modern twist to the current market, and I think we'll be in business.

September 15, 20168 yr North Market redevelopment on tap as Columbus puts out call for ideas With demand strong for downtown land, it was almost inevitable that the North Market and its parking lot would become a target. That day has come. Columbus plans to issue a request for proposals in mid-October for the potential redevelopment of the 2.1-acre North Market site at 59 Spruce St. What could that mean? That will be up to the developer proposals. The only condition is that the North Market be included in the plan, said Columbus Development Director Steve Schoeny "We’re not doing this because we have to," he told me. "We’re doing this because we should. If it doesn’t benefit the market, we won’t do a deal.” More below: http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2016/09/14/north-market-redevelopment-on-tap-as-columbus-puts.html "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Get a top notch architect in to give a modern twist to the current market, and I think we'll be in business. I'd take it a step further. Definitely like the addition of a multiple-level market- with actual market space on the ground floor rather than being a restaurant/incubator type space which is more what NM is now. On top of that, though, I want to see mixed-use of some kind- offices, residential, etc. Preferally 20+ stories would be great. A real defining project for this area.
September 15, 20168 yr Like what was posted, the Markthal in Rotterdam has all that. The outside is residential and office space, while the "inside of the tube" is an open air market. It wouldn't be a bad blueprint to use as a starting point. Very Stable Genius
November 4, 20168 yr Community Input Solicited for North Market Development Proposal Back in September, representatives from the City of Columbus and the North Market jointly announced that they would begin a public process to solicit proposals for the redevelopment of the North Market parking lot, which is owned by the City of Columbus. Tonight, the same representatives called together a public input session to solicit input and feedback from the community at large. “So, why are on earth are we messing with the North Market… that’s the one question that everyone has,” stated City of Columbus Development Director Steve Schoeny. “What you may not realize, is that the way the North Market operates depends upon the parking lot fees. We’re trying to figure out if that’s still the best way to support the Market.” More below: http://www.columbusunderground.com/community-input-solicited-for-north-market-development-proposal "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
