Walking by the Convention Center today and noticed they have installed some living walls along the portions of the High St side of the building where it connects to the Hyatt.

 

A welcome addition, I really wish more places around downtown would consider doing this (looking at you Ohio Theatre facing the Commons).

I really like this, and hope they can continue adding things like this, art, etc to the main part of the convention center along High. Good start at least if anything.

Adviser hired for 23-story downtown Hilton expansion

 

The Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority is bringing a consultant aboard as it preps for a planned 470-room expansion of the Hilton Columbus Downtown.

Nice! I didn't really mind the early renderings but I thought there was certainly some room for improvement. Was the reduction in height noticeable?

Yep, they opened up RFQ bidding for specific pieces of the project already.

I cannot express enough how I would like to see some kind of boutique hotel/condo/apartment highrise on that 60 space north parking lot on Goodale. *sigh*

The tower crane has gone up on the site for the parking garage along 3rd, depending on timelines we may have two cranes on site before the end of the year.

Are they using 2 cranes for this project?

^I think DevolsDance is referring to the Hilton project that may begin construction this fall. The tower crane might not be installed until early next year  - I imagine there will be mobilization, demo and foundation work before the tower crane is installed.

Oh gotcha. Yea it might be a few months after official groundbreaking before we see the crane for that project. 

 

Who knows, maybe Market Tower will pop up out of nowhere, the Hilton crane will go up quicker than expected, and this project will drag on. Three tower cranes baby! The AC Marriott may even use a tower crane, but I'm not sure. I think I saw they had applied for a crawler crane as opposed to a tower crane.

Was reminded of the 2010 Downtown Strategic Plan and its recommendation to build a field house on the Convention Center East Lot between Third and Fourth Streets on Nationwide Boulevard. It got me thinking of a concept I had/have.

 

More than just a field house, of course. According to the auditor that lot is 294,030 square feet. That means two levels of underground parking could hold approximately 1,500 parking spaces. On top of that a hotel with a floor plate of 75,000 square feet and 35 floors tall could hold 1,000 hotel rooms. JW Marriott? Say this building has 100 feet of Nationwide frontage, and runs 750 feet parallel and along Third. On the Nationwide and Fourth corner could be a 20 floor hotel with a 15,000 square foot floor plate that could hold 150 rooms. Ritz-Carlton? This leaves approximately 200,000 square feet for a field house. But who wants to stay in a nice hotel like those two and have views of a 200,000 square foot bright roof? Enter: a green roof. This could have say a pavilion of sorts overlooking Nationwide Boulevard. Trees, grass, flowers. A miniature Columbus Commons available for events e.g. small concerts or American Ninja Warrior. Then you could have outdoor sand volleyball courts, tennis courts, basketball courts etc. Available to the public as a park when not rented. All this of course would be connected to the existing Convention Center complex underneath Third.

 

I figure this would cost around $600-$700 million. I wonder if anything of the sort is still in the works?

The new parking structure has hit 3rd St height so far and going up. I didn't realize just how close this would come to 3rd, I'm excited to see how the mesh facade treatment will look coming into downtown.

There are about 10 threads this could fit so I apologize if this is the incorrect one, please feel free to move.

 

It looks like the Hyatt Regency has put in an application for a 275' tower crane for a duration of 18 months with the FAA. The existing structure is 256' tall I believe so 275' would be about right if they were doing something major to the structure but I have not heard of anything with it, anyone else? Maybe window replacement? I can't imagine they'd need a crane for 18 months just to do some HVAC  updates or anything along those lines. Anyway, it looks like the actual application was submitted last year but just now re-opened in the system. I'm curious to see what this is about.

Has anyone found any more Insight into this application? I hope it is window replacement. Swapping out the windows for a non-brown appearance would do wonders for the building.

Coming here to comment because window replacement on the Hyatt was just brought up in the PNC tower renovations thread.  Back in November, this tower crane appication was attributed to antenna replacement.  But, a Columbus Business First article came out earlier this month and in that article, it makes a very quick mention that NRI plans a $20 million dollar renovation.  At the time I read that article, I thought about this post and meant to comment here, but forgot.  Could the tower crane actually be related to this?

Room renovation does not sound like facade glass replacement(unfortunately). Also wouldn't replacing all of that glass cost more than 20 million?

The 18 month time frame makes more sense then. My guess though is that it's a more efficient way of delivering materials than a window replacement. $20 million doesn't seem like enough to cover both interior and exterior renovations of that extent. 

So we could end up with a 275' crane next to the Hilton crane which will probably reach at least 400'. If we are lucky, we could also have the Market Tower up at the same time which would probably reach about 375-400'. 

 

That would be pretty cool for us crane fanatics.

I really dislike the metal curtain thing they installed on the garage. I may be biased because I was in Miami recently and noticed the parking garages there have really cool exterior designs. Either way this is really ugly to me.

There's no bias. It is objectively terrible and half-a$$ed. It looks terrible day and night. Windy or calm.  I really hate it everytime I go by it. There are so many more good examples of garage wraps they could have used. Some better ones probably would have been cheaper too. And with this being a major entrance into the downtown core, it deserved to be better. 

 

I think one of the oddities that drives me nuts is that the inclines are easily visible behind it. If that was the flat side and the curtains ran parallel or If they ran the curtains diagonally maybe it would be better. 

 

While the Goodale garage isn't necessarily anything amazing, I'll take 10  more of those over the curtain design. Also, the colors of the goodale garage can be tied to the convention center. This garage and the curtains don't really 'mesh' with the identity of the convention center IMO

 

Sorry for the rant. I just hate so much. Lol.

I sadly agree that it is quite a disappointment. While I felt the concept was creative, the execution was kind of a flop. So many wonderful uses of kinetic screening exist that it kills me to see this turn out as such a let down. I just keep holding out hope they will doctor it up with lighting or some adjustments but I think this may have just been a bit of a miss.

Wait...so that's the finished product?  Wow....that is the most half-assed parking garage i think i have ever seen.  I literally thought that the mesh curtain was part of the construction as a safety thing.  That's actually part of the design...totally unacceptable in my opinion.  Come on Columbus, i get it, its just a parking garage, but we can do better than this! Disappointing!

Yea, honestly, they should just take the mesh thing off because it looks ridiculous.  It would be better off without it.
