I don't think those two are really very comparable.  The Mitchell's has a very stylized 50's soda stand drive-in meets mid-century (with the strong horizontal lines and lots of glass) look to it.  Very different from the bottom picture in design and intent.

The two aren't exact replicas of each other.

Was told this weekend that a microbrewery and a deli signed on to be in the building with the theatre. From what I noticed, they've been doing some work on one of the retail spots.

Also, the small strip with the starbucks should be breaking ground next month.

Nice, thanks!

Also, this is interesting. May / may not have any impact on the speculation.

More one the speculation front....

Smucker to close San Francisco office, lay off as many as 100

“We are consolidating five different offices dedicated to our pet food business, including the San Francisco office, into our corporate headquarters in Orrville, Ohio,”

https://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/news/2018/07/30/smucker-to-close-sf-lay-off-100.html

Paywalled.  But in your post from 6/24, above, Stu Lichter said that the new anchor office tenant was not currently located in the area.  Is Smucker really so far away to count as "not in the area?"  Maybe it is, but I'll feel a little bit underwhelmed if that turns out to be the announcement (though I've heard that speculation from other sources as well, so I'm not at all suggesting that it's wrong).

East End development in Akron attracts more tenants: Handel’s, Starbucks and Marques Restaurant

Published: August 9, 2018 - 3:18 PM | Updated: August 9, 2018 - 8:38 PM

Coffee, ice cream, candied yams and beer.

It’s all slated to come to the new East End development in Akron, east of the city’s downtown.

On Thursday, East End owner Industrial Realty Group said Starbucks, Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt, and Marques restaurant are coming to the East End, a 1.4-million-square-foot, mixed-use redevelopment of the former world headquarters campus of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.

Not Smucker, but geographically not too far off:

https://www.ohio.com/news/20180924/babcock-amp-wilcox-moving-headquarters-local-operations-to-akrons-east-end

Babcock & Wilcox moving headquarters, local operations to Akron’s East End

Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises will relocate hundreds of employees from Barberton and Copley to Akron – and also move its headquarters from Charlotte, N.C., to here.

B&W’s new corporate offices will be in the East End Offices, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.’s former headquarters on East Market Street. The move is expected to take place no later than next summer.

....

This means Akron – and Ohio – becomes the new home to a publicly traded company while the area retains approximately 700 jobs. The announcement comes shortly after longtime Akron company Myers Industries Inc. said it plans in the near future to move to Cleveland, taking about 120 jobs out of the Rubber City.

But at the same time Akron’s next-door neighbor Barberton, despite strong efforts to retain B&W, loses what had been its largest private employer that dates back to the early 1900s in the city – although the blow will be somewhat softened.

=============================================

In hindsight, maybe it should have been obvious that B&W was a better fit than Smucker's to move to Akron, and I'm glad that we at least got them to move the headquarters from Charlotte to here (whereas Smucker's would have been just a local HQ move as well).

^At a time when Barberton is trying to revitalize it's core, this is not good for their tax base.  Great that Akron is getting some North Carolina jobs.

  • Author

Didn't see that coming.

No, not good for Barberton. Unfortunately this seems to be another one of those times when large companies are shifting HQs to other nearby cities. Akron just lost Myers Industries.

We went through this about 5+ years ago. Akron lost Omnova to Beachwood. Cleveland lost Eaton to Beachwood....

Akron council considers relocation grant for B&W and two new housing developments

By Doug Livingston
Beacon Journal/Ohio.com

With a $3.6 million relocation grant for Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises and two land deals, Akron is getting ready to welcome 700 more jobs and 66 new homes.

The city and City Council on Monday also advanced a proposal to give a minority-owned barber college what could amount to $30,000 in grants to help students afford tuition.

Here's an update on The 797 Building on East Market. It's right by the new Middlebury Commons and not far from the East End Project. Hopefully, this will be able to fill most of the 60 rooms starting in Feb. 2019 and match the success of the East end occupancy rates.

Feb. 2020 maybe. No way it's ready in 2 months. I went by recently and was surprised to see work was being done. It felt like one of those projects that is announced and then just sits while they try and get investors. Basically what is happening downtown right now.

  • 2 weeks later...

Wow. I never imagined that building would be repurposed at all, much less as an apartment complex. Very interesting.

Looks like East End is gradually breathing new life and energy into the Middlebury/E. Market corridor, a little faster than I anticipated.

It's nice to see a long-neglected neighborhood being reborn, even if it still has a ways to go yet.

Akron considers an entertainment district outside of downtown

By Doug Livingston
Beacon Journal/Ohio.com

City of Akron leaders are entertaining the idea of more liquor permits to support growing interest in living, shopping and eating at East End.

Industrial Realty Group (IRG), which is behind the mixed-use redevelopment of the old Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. headquarters on East Market Street, received a warm welcome at City Hall Monday as leaders endorsed a plan to designate the company’s 80 acres as the only entertainment district in Akron outside of downtown.

https://www.ohio.com/news/20190325/akron-considers-entertainment-district-outside-of-downtown

I was not aware that there were two already Downtown. It certainly does not feel like it. I went to Toledo recently and was pleasently surprised with their area around the baseball stadium and hockey arena. They have a entertainment district that allows open container as well.

I suppose it may ultimately come down to whether a converted school building is viewed as logical extension of East End up the Market Street corridor. Given the successful conversion of the former Akron West High School building into a senior citizens' home on West Hill though, I would think it would be a waste to see the former Akron East High School building simply bite the dust.

Heck, maybe they can even restore the old swimming pool in the basement!

An update on this. Akron Public Schools auctioned of a number of buildings fairly recently. This being one. It was bought by........IRG.

South Main and the Main/Market Arts District? The benefits don't yet seem obvious in either one, but then, all of the recent construction hasn't done much to help either.

Nice! I figured they would step in and purchase it.

Seems like the entire Middlebury/East Market corridor is increasingly poised for renewal and growth. It's both timely and long overdue.

I can't find any info. readily available. But much like this scenario, I don't think they are used as a means to create "entertainment", just more a vehicle to open more liquor licenses. I want to say when they built Northside Lofts they need it there because they had plans for several new restaurants at the time. Not positive though.

Akron City Council approves East End entertainment district, the first one outside of downtown

Posted Apr 1, 7:12 PM

By Robin Goist, cleveland.com

AKRON, Ohio – East End has become Akron’s third community entertainment district, and the city’s only such district outside of downtown Akron.

Akron City Council voted Monday to support a plan by Industrial Realty Group to bring retail, food service and entertainment businesses to the company’s mixed-use redevelopment around the former Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company headquarters on East Market Street by designating 80 acres as a “community entertainment district,” or CED.

Stopped in to check out Starbucks and Handel's a couple of days ago.

The Starbucks was surprisingly lacking in seating despite its spaciousness. It definitely gave the impression of being one of the locations where people should stop in to order latte on their way to the office, but not let the dust collect on their shoes or set up for more than a working meeting at the conference table and chairs in the back. For a store that I presume is supposed to serve as something of a neighborhood hub for East End, it communicates a much different message, and seems incongruent with its decidedly suburban exterior. For what it's worth, there does seem to be ample room to add more tables and seating along the wall opposite the counter.

The Handel's for its part had a few teenage girls standing at the counter, much like you would expect for a neighborhood walk-up ice cream stand.

The two stores are nice additions to an area that has been sorely lacking in retail. On the whole, however, the strip center seems like a missed opportunity for East End to extend the streetwall anchored by the former Goodyear HQ buildings and foster a genuine sense of walkability and vibrancy in the new district. What is really served by having the setback from E. Market with a row of parking in the front?

B&W starts anew in Akron

From the Akron Beacon Journal: Akron is now home to Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises Inc. The company, previously headquartered in Barberton, just finished moving all 600 or so employees to the revamped sixth and seventh floors of the East End Offices, the former Goodyear corporate headquarters at 1200 E. Market St. The design and layout of the newly renovated space combines B&W’s long history with the new.

New luxury apartments coming to Akron's East End

Dan Shingler

Akron is getting some more luxury apartments on its near east side.

Industrial Realty Group has begun construction of more than 60 new units at its East End development on East Market Street.

IRG plans to lease the new apartments for about $1.80 to $1.95 per square foot. That's more than the roughly $1.50 per square foot that tenants of existing units across the street pay, but in line with the prices for other big new projects, including the Bowery District on South Main Street downtown, Kiernan said.

Apartments at former Goodyear headquarters accepting reservations

Kevin Smith - Cleveland Business Journal - Aug. 27, 2021

image.png.5dc1b273e2a5cfa59e7da0cb66b9c030.png

"The renovation of Goodyear’s former headquarters is expected to finish sometime in October, Industrial Realty Group says. IRG is taking reservations for apartments now while construction is underway. ... The project, in partnership with Solon, Ohio-based Industrial Commercial Properties LLC, aims to put 66 units into the former Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. headquarters building in downtown Akron at 1200 E. Market St."

A new rail trail outside of the old Goodyear HQ is now funded for a portion of it.  It is called the heritage trail and will be 8 miles in length if/when completed.  They plan to get 3/4 of a mile mostly elevated trail completed in next couple years. It runs from near the new Goodyear HQ to East Exchange st.  If it is completed will eventually stretch from Kenmore and to Ellet at Massillon rd in east.  Going east seems very doable since it would only be another mile perhaps. Going west past Exchange looks very challenging as very little remains of the tracks or right of way.  Most likely it will end in University Park someplace as there is political will to connect Middlebury to University Park.  Not sure there is interest, political will, or money to connect to Kenmore when towpath connects downtown Akron to Kenmore already.

I rode a portion of that trail last fall by the old headquarters, under the various bridges, and past the Ledges Fountain and was pretty impressed. Building out that trail system with linear parks, new homes that front the trail (similar to Tremont in Cleveland) and dense infill multi-use developments is the best way to inject life back into the area imo, and its great to hear that there are (hopefully) tangible funding commitments and schedules to further build out the trail.
