I would agree that it seems like there are two different audiences for the food being offered at each restaurant.  Having said that- I can't believe I haven't been to Heck's yet.  Guess who's gonna ch

Wow, this was actually pretty lucky. No one was hurt, and there's no noticeable serious damage to the building's facade. We'll have to wait to learn if there is any more damage than meets the eye. I heard that the vibrations from the drilling in Public Square may have actually had something do with this, but that's just speculation. It seems a little far from Public Square to be serious affected by the construction there.

Earliest video perhaps?  The angle makes Cleveland downtown look like NYC.

Oh great, I already see news stations from NYC in the comments asking to use the footage.  The next news cycle will be full of jokes about how "Cleveland is falling apart!"  Strap in folks, we're gonna be laughed at for the next 24 hours.

I love that the big news orgs are on there, asking to use the video for free.

Hell no! Those news outlets are in constant reliance of people giving away content. Don't do this...don't give away your property.

Always be negotiating.

If that's the case, imagine what would have happened to the Columbia building if it wasn't torn down...

One of the reasons this is my favorite street downtown!

What pisses me off even more is that this building is legitimately a couple months away from getting renovated into new apartments.  But that surely won't be mentioned.  Tonight, across America, people will be told that "a building fell apart in Downtown Cleveland!!"...and the obligatory jokes will ensue.

This is hardly an only-in-Cleveland thing.  I can think of similar or worse stories from Chicago, Philly, etc.  Didn't a building in Manhattan just explode recently?

Seriously. A parapet wall suffering collapse is actually fairly common. It's essentially superficial. New York can't even begin to joke when in the last couple years they've had several building explode and fully collapse leaving people dead/seriously injured.

Collapse of the facade at Shore Restaurant in Lakewood last year.

The owners are trying to reassemble the pieces in order to get a recreation done.

Crazy. We are so lucky. That would've killed ppl. U never know

lExactly. They are more subject to freeze/thaw cycles because they endure them from both sides of the wall. And then there's the wind which was strong today. It's not a collapse, which suggests a structural failure. This is the failure of a decorative element and likely will only slow the project with inspections, a legal settlement to the owner of the wrecked car, and possible reinforcements to the remaining parapets.

I also suspect other parapets in old buildings will face scrutiny as well. But this is one of the oldest 10+ story buildings downtown.

It's not a collapse,

Exactly.  When I heard that phrase used on the news I thought how ridiculous.  The media sensationalizing their news cast.  The building did not partially collapse as they mentioned.

The article title changed within a couple hours once they got more information. It's a shame it has to go from most sensationalized to least as information comes available (instead of the other way around), but it's the way it is. The article title is now:

Bricks fall from top of building in downtown Cleveland; no injuries reported (photos, video)

From what I recall from a presentation on restoration work of parapets on the Terminal Tower, it is fairly common for water to sepe into cracks and cause problems due to freeze-thaw cycle. Forest City had deffered maintenance on the tower for years and only took measures to replace it in mid-2000s when falling debris actually posed a danger to buildings and pedestrians below.

There is a building in Playhouse Square with a URS sign on it that has netting installed at the location of the parapets. So perhaps, that would be the short-term solution untill the restoration work could occur? And WTAM sensationalized it too this morning saying that the building collapsed when, as stated above, the parapet is merely a decorative element.

What is the building across from the Garfield and sandwiched between the Leader and 515 garage?

I still hate the new name.

Started to notice some dumpsters behind the building on Vincent the past 2 weeks.  Workers have been in and out of the freight entrance removing what appears to be drywall and other interior materials.  The lights on the first floor have randomly been on a few nights as well.

Fencing is up around the base of the building, at least on the Euclid side. Couldn't see down East 6th as I was going by.

^Based on some renderings upthread, I think the plan is to attach new stone (or "stone") panels to recreate the neoclassical bank facade the building had in the early 20th century.

Here is a picture of old painted signage under the layer of brick being removed from the Garfield Building's facade.  If you can't make it out, the visible part says "Jewelers Completed."

Thanks for the pic of that signage. Like stepping out of a time machine.

Or simply finding a time capsule! That's great!!

I'm a bit confused by that signage. It look super amazing! But is it painted directly onto structural members, not the previous facade? It sure looks like it when I walked past yesterday.

Pretty cool. That painted sign most go back to the original facade (not the facade being recreated in the current project). I believe Cowell and Hubbard was located in the Garflied Building in the late 19th century, so it might be part of its signage, before the transition to the bank facade.

The uncovering of the original facade and hidden signage was a real treat to view on my lunch walk this week.  Here are a few photos of what the Garfield looked like in the early 1900's.

My friend took a picture of the front of the building this morning.  Looks like this sign was actually a temporary sign, that was used during construction to advertise the future use of the building?

So cool

^ Very.

Very cool indeed. I read that C&H moved into that space in 1894, so presumably the signage is from at least then and maybe even a year or so earlier!

I have to assume it will get covered up again, hopefully with care for future access, as the building is refurbed?

Here we go! Great addition to the dining scene.

"One of Cleveland’s most spectacular interiors has officially been claimed. Originally home to the Cleveland Trust Co., and later National City Bank, the column-lined bank lobby on the main floor of the Garfield Building will become the Cleveland home for Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse."

Yay!!!

Does anyone know when Jeff Ruby's will open?

I know that they have been working on the exterior, and they are working on the steak house buildout, but

have they been actively working on the office to apartment conversion?  And when are the apartment

supposed to be ready?

i believe they have stated the exterior work and restaurant buildout will be completed in the for the RNC.  The restaurant will be placed inside the spectacular preserved intact bank lobby inside

Partly answering my own question here; Walking past today it seems that new brickwork is being put over the old signage, but with an air-gap, so maybe it will be discovered again in 2116!

On a related, but off-topic, note; the removal of the Playhouse Square building has revealed some old signage on the side of the Bonfoey Gallery building.

This Ruby dude has quite the ego. He likes to be the big player in town. He probably started to realize there wasn't a lot of buzz about his restaurant. A lot of competition here. Ken Stewart found that out.

As long as they find a good concept to replace it, I don't really see this as a loss. We already have a good number of steakhouses around that area.

I had been wondering about this project lately; so now, no Jeff Ruby's for Cleveland. Oh well.  Ruby went from describing this space as ''the most spectacular'' he ever saw with nothing like it anywhere, ''even Las Vegas'', to no deal?  Someone didn't kowtow or kiss his **s enough I bet and, as you state, he'd be another fish in a large pond.

Quite the ego indeed (even in his pics you can tell he's arrogant).  Someone or something else will take over the most spectacular space anywhere, even Las Vegas.

Bye Jeff.
