New Moerlein owner plans $30 million overhaul of historic OTR brewery buildings, may revive old brands By Andy Brownfield  –  Senior staff reporter, Cincinnati Business Courier May 31, 2022

This is terrible news IMO

Moerlein owner fires founder, production staff in major business shakeup

https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2020/12/07/moerlein-fires-founder-production-staff-in-major.html

One of the first breweries to break into Cincinnati's craft beer scene has fired its founder and the production team as it outsources production of its beer.

The Cincinnati Beverage Co., the owner of the Christian Moerlein, Little Kings and Hudepohl brands, announced Monday that it is contracting with another local brewery to take over production of its brands. That has resulted in the layoffs of brewery founder Greg Hardman and all 20 members of the production staff.

... a decision has not yet been made on what to do about the brewery and taproom facility at 1621 Moore St. in Over-the-Rhine where the brands are currently brewed. ..

Is the Moerlein Lager House (down by the river) owned by Cincinnati Beverage Co? Or is that a separate entity?

The two partners Greg brought on in December 2019 have a background in consumer goods marketing, and I would guess they made the decision to focus on the handful of successful Cincinnati beer brands that the company owns and produces. Moerlein never was especially good at creating and marketing new beers, unlike the Rhinegeist and MadTree type breweries that come out with a dozen new beers every year.

Whether or not Moerlein wants to keep the restaurants remains to be seen. The Lager House opened in 2011 so they might be coming to the end of a lease soon. The Moerlein restaurant that opened in CVG is operated by HMSHost, so it seems like they essentially licensed the name.

12 hours ago, taestell said:

Interesting discussion re: Moerlein over at the Cincinnati Beer subreddit. Some people are speculating that they outsourced production to Taft's.

that would make sense with their facility in Spring Grove Village, I always hear speculation about it being Sam Adams, but they have been producing at capacity for years now, and their expansion is meant to meet their own demands. So I would be shocked if it was them.

My other thought was potentially Braxton, since they have like 4 locations now, perhaps they needed to contract out some of their capacity.

This whole thing is kind of sad to me. Greg went through all this effort to buy all these old Cincinnati brands and bring the production back to Cincinnati. He was one of the first to open that production in OTR. And now to see him forced out of everything he worked so hard on is sad and all the people being laid off. Moerlein never really blew up like the other early breweries did.

^ If you check out that discussion, there any many people saying that he wasn't great at running a business, and that his public "Beer Baron" personality didn't match how he acted as the CEO. I have also heard this from a few people I know who have worked with him over the years, so it seems like there is some truth to it.

Moerlein brought on an experienced brewmaster to start up the Lager House and their OTR brewery, and apparently he tweaked many of the old recipes and improved them. After only 2 or 3 years, he left and co-founded Braxton. Braxton is constantly releasing new beers and keeping up with craft beer trends, and has multiple successful tap rooms. Moerlein basically keeps churning out the same old classic Cincinnati beers and their tap room is rarely crowded except for Bockfest.

So, yeah... if Moerlein isn't going to put in the effort to do the things that craft breweries need to do to be successful these days, maybe it's best that they just contract with another brewery and keep producing Hudy 14K, Little Kings, and other nostalgic beer brands. At least it's still going to be brewed in Cincinnati.

Yeah. I know Greg on a personal level (not super close), and I've always enjoyed talking to him. But I have heard bad things about working at Moerlein under him. It's not exactly a secret in the industry.

I feel bad for the production team that was all laid off. The story behind the company was also great, and it's unfortunate that that's pretty much going away with their loss of a physical brewing space in OTR.

The Business Courier article says this (bolded emphasis mine):

Quote

Woffington said that a decision has not yet been made on what to do about the brewery and taproom facility at 1621 Moore St. in Over-the-Rhine where the brands are currently brewed. He said the Cincinnati Beverage Co. does not own the building or land, but it still has the ability to reopen its taproom at that location. The taproom has been closed since June as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The land and building of the taproom were bought by "CinBev Real Estate LLC" in June. That LLC was registered on the same date in January with the same address as "Cincinnati Beverage Co". So, while technically true that "Cincinnati Beverage Co" does not own the building or land, it seems like it's the same (new) ownership group that controls the business and the real estate.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm a bit suspicious that CinBev, having moved beer production out of Bockfest Hall, will now sell the place to a developer.  I assume that the former taproom space and the cavernous basement with the potato chip machine in it won't be demolished, but the rest of Bockfest Hall isn't of use outside of Bockfest.

Yes I was wondering if they were planning the same thing. I wonder which parts of the complex are historic and which parts are not? Even parts that look modern from the outside might have historic interior or subterranean parts?

it’d be neat to use the multiple garage bays all around the exterior for a series of workshop/artisan/light industrial type businesses, if unlikely.

I wonder if the brands got acquired by whichever local brewery is actually doing the brewing.

Very Interesting. The most interesting part is what they are planning with the real estate they have purchased recently in OTR under "Southern Ohio Holding Organization". That entity has spent over $4M buying up buildings.  Would be pretty cool if they used them for production and taproom space.

That's very interesting and the part where they say that this same company appears to own Jackson Brewery and Clyffside Brewery could be very exciting indeed.

I'm probably biased but I think there is a much bigger market potential for Hudy Delight. It should be at least as prevalent in the Cincinnati region as PBR, High Life and the like, but it's just not as available or widespread. I think there is a market for good quality, locally made light lagers and they have the name recognition to take it over from even national brands like Miller Lite, especially if they can keep building on the popularity and success of the Bengals with the Hu-Dey special cans and promotions like that.

Family-owned brewery Verge Brewing secures location on Cincinnati's West Side

A family-owned craft brewery has secured a location in Delhi Township on the West Side, weeks after announcing they were targeting the area they view as underserved.

Verge Brewing Co. announced last week the acquisition of a 3,000-square-foot facility located at 4807 Delhi Pike, less than two miles from Mount St. Joseph University. The brewery said it would renovate the location to house its brewery, taproom and kitchen. Verge Brewing plans to open its taproom by the end of 2022.

The property is currently home to flooring store Floors by Valvano, but the business is moving next door for an expanded show room, Verge said. The brewery will operate in the building through a lease agreement with Floors by Valvano, according to Pete Bender, who runs operations and finance at Verge.

Cincinnati toasts Sam Adams' 25 years, $85 million expansion: PHOTOS

By Zachary Jarrell  –  Reporter, Cincinnati Business Courier

May 14, 2022 Updated May 14, 2022, 10:34am EDT

Boston Beer Co. celebrated 25 years in Cincinnati and a recently completed expansion project as Mayor Aftab Pureval declared Friday, May 13, 2022, "Sam Adams Day."

Pureval made the proclamation on "513 Day," which celebrates all things Cincinnati. Reading his declaration aloud, Pureval recognized the company’s $85 million investment into expanding its brewery at 1625 Central Parkway – saying the Sam Adams brand put Cincinnati “on the map as one of the top cities in the country for craft brew production.”

To mark the day, Boston Beer (NYSE: SAM) launched an exclusive brew, Queen City Crown, at its taproom.

The expansion, which dates to 2020, saw the installation of two new canning lines and packing equipment that allowed the company to quadruple its local production. When the project was announced, the brewery planned to add 107 jobs to its existing 130. In total, the company has invested more than $200 million in the site, which now employs more than 250 people, according to a release.

One Holland Corp., one of Cincinnati's largest restaurant groups, opening Barleycorn's Brewhouse

One of Cincinnati's largest restaurant groups is getting into the craft brewing business with a pair of upcoming Northern Kentucky breweries.

One Holland Corp., the owner of several LaRosa's and Skyline franchises, as well as iconic Northern Kentucky eateries Greyhound Tavern and Barleycorn's, is planning two craft breweries in Northern Kentucky: Barleycorn's Brewhouse in a former Wilder firehouse and 1842 Brewery in a $22 million development planned for Independence. The latter brewery is named for the year Independence was founded.

New Moerlein owner plans $30 million overhaul of historic OTR brewery buildings, may revive old brands

By Andy Brownfield  –  Senior staff reporter, Cincinnati Business Courier

May 31, 2022

The new owner of Cincinnati Beverage Co., home of beer brands like Christian Moerlein and Little Kings, plans a $30 million renovation of three historic brewery buildings in Over-the-Rhine.

John Richardson, chairman of the board of SugarCreek, one of the largest private companies in Cincinnati, acquired Cincinnati Beverage Co. in early May. The Cincinnati Beverage Co. is being operated as its own company separate from SugarCreek.

In addition to taking over the Cincinnati Beverage Co., which oversees brands like Christian Moerlein, Hudepohl, Shoenling, Little Kings and 30 other historic beer names, the group has begun renovating three historic brewery buildings in Over-the-Rhine – Clyffside Brewery, Felsenhaus and the Jackson Brewery – an undertaking what Richardson said would entail more than $30 million in investment.

Whiskey business beginners to start distillery in New Richmond

A group of whiskey business beginners is set to start a distillery in New Richmond.

New Richmond Distilleries LLC has purchased two properties on Front Street in the village located along the Ohio River – one to house its distillery and the other to act as its retail location – and applied for a liquor license.

The distillery will be new construction, according to Bill Brantner, one of New Richmond’s co-founders. The project is in the design phase, so he couldn’t offer specifics on an expected completion date. But Brantner told me they are expecting to build an event space in addition to their liquor-making operation, set to include aged whiskey and vodka.

Barleycorn's Brewhouse sets opening for Northern Kentucky brewery

One of the largest restaurant groups in Cincinnati is set to open the first of two breweries it has planned for Northern Kentucky.

One Holland will open Barleycorn's Brewhouse on Aug. 16 at 402 Licking Pike in Wilder. It precedes the 1842 Brewery planned in One Holland's Downs of Nicholson development slated to open in Independence in the fall of 2023.

One Holland is the owner of several LaRosa's and Skyline franchises, as well as iconic Northern Kentucky eateries Greyhound Tavern and Barleycorn's. The 1842 Brewery, named for the year Independence was founded, was planned first – a project by One Holland owner Gary Holland and a group of business partners and friends who trace their friendship back to their days at Simon Kenton High School, a group so tight-knit that they were known as the "Simon Kenton Mafia."
