August 17, 20222 yr March First Brewing opening tasting room, restaurant on Fountain Square A local craft brewery is opening a tasting room and restaurant in one of the most prominent spaces in downtown Cincinnati. March First Brewing and Distilling is taking over 10,000 square feet of the former Rock Bottom Brewing space on Fountain Square, with the goal of opening by spring 2023. Rock Bottom, which originally opened at Fountain Square in 1996, permanently closed in 2020. The brewery and distillery signed a lease for the space with Fifth Third Bancorp, the building's owner. Thomas Neltner, the bank's head of enterprise workplace services who oversees all its facilities, told me the old Rock Bottom space sat vacant for the past two years because Fifth Third wanted to be very selective about what would go into that spot. November 17, 20222 yr Northwood Cider Co., Cincinnati's first dedicated cidery, opened in Norwood Cincinnati's first brewery dedicated entirely to craft cider just opened its doors in Norwood. Northwood Cider Co. opened Nov. 11 in a former brake shop at 2075 Mills Ave. While Northwood – which takes its name from a type of apple cider tree – specializes in craft cider, and opened with six on draft, they aren't what consumers may have come to expect from brands like Angry Orchard. December 2, 20222 yr Cincinnati's Cartridge Brewing acquired by Cleveland's Saucy Brew Works One of Cincinnati's newest craft breweries, which opened inside a $30 million mixed-use development north of the city, has been acquired. Cartridge Brewing, which opened in October 2020 inside the redeveloped Peters Cartridge Factory at 1411 Grandin Road in Hamilton Township, has been acquired by Cleveland's Saucy Brew Works, the companies announced Thursday evening. His goal is to open this summer. "I don't know if there's a person who works at a brewery who doesn't wish they owned their own," Brewer told me. January 26, 20232 yr Cincinnati's HighGrain Brewing plans second brewery in Brentwood Bowl A shuttered Cincinnati bowling alley is getting new life as a local craft brewery takes over the space. HighGrain Brewing Co., which first opened its doors in Silverton in 2019, is building out a second brewery location inside the shuttered Brentwood Bowl at 9176 Winton Road in Springfield Township. The brewery hopes to debut the new location this fall. Brewery co-founder Josh Jansen told me HighGrain was riding high on a lot of new growth when the opportunity to open inside Brentwood Bowl came up in 2021. January 27, 20232 yr It doesn't really specify in that article but are any of the lanes going to be kept? A brewery with a few lanes to throw on would be fun, kind of like a smaller scale Pinewood social or Pins.
January 27, 20232 yr I would hope so. But given the private event spaces and and brewing operation expansion, I feel like they're running out of space. If they were going to keep the lanes, it seems like a home run to go ahead and state that it will have bowling as well.
January 27, 20232 yr I believe the lanes were removed prior to the Brewery being involved in the project.
January 27, 20232 yr That's a shame, I didn't expect them all to stay but maybe a pair of lanes just to have for groups or events.
February 1, 20232 yr Braxton Brewing Company announced in an IG post, "we’re beyond thrilled to share that we are partnering with a team to take Garage Beer to new heights! While Garage Beer Company will focus on growing the distribution, sales, and notoriety of our beloved brand Braxton will continue to proudly brew, package, and sell the beer in our taprooms!" The new IG account and new packaging for the beer itself remove references to Braxton. So it's not 100% clear to me whether "Garage Beer Company" is just a new brand launched and owned by Braxton, or if there is a separate company that has acquired this beer from Braxton (although Braxton will continue to produce it). Seems a little strange.

February 1, 20232 yr Cincinnati Magazine has a little more info: Quote One of Cincinnati’s most-loved local brews might not be solely local for much longer. Braxton Brewing Company has partnered with brand investment marketer Andrew Sauer to form Garage Beer Co., which will focus solely on growing distribution, sales, and notoriety of the Covington lager. February 7, 20232 yr Blue Ash's Firehouse Grill & Brewery reopening with new head brewer A Cincinnati craft brewery that halted brewing operations when it lost its brewmaster is hosting a grand reopening after naming a new head brewer. Firehouse Grill & Brewery, at 4785 Lake Forest Drive in Blue Ash, is hosting a multi-day grand reopening Feb. 14-18 after naming Kurt Hilgefort as its new head brewer. Firehouse Grill opened in 2011 and expanded to add its own in-house brewery in 2020. Owner Molly Davis told me Firehouse Grill lost its previous brewer to another local craft brewery late last year. With the current labor shortage she decided to shutter the brewing operation rather than rush to fill the position. Firehouse Grill & Brewery's brewing system sat idle for about four months while a new brewer was found. June 7, 20232 yr That Madtree looks to be really cool and will probably be very successful, but I personally like the Rhinegeist or Urban Artifact types that focus on the beer vs. Madtree and Braxton who appear to be focused on making a chain of brewery/brewpubs almost more like a restaurant group would expand instead of how an alcohol distributer would expand but the different strategies are interesting to follow.

From a business perspective, I understand why MadTree and the like are going for more gathering spaces rather than distribution growth. Alcohol consumption trends can change on a dime; seltzers for example have completely shaken up the industry. Also, if a true recession hits, people will be cutting $10-$15 six-packs out of their budget first. Outside of pandemics, there will always be demand for gathering spaces where people can socialize and drink alcohol. A lot of breweries pride themselves on being a "community gathering space" too, so the mission can be different depending on their vision.
June 7, 20232 yr So to compare to an example up-thread, I haven't been to the new Hi-Wire brewing yet in Norwood, but I have been to their original Asheville location. In the photos it's hard to tell but it doesn't seem like it's acting as an outpost of Asheville here in the Cincinnati, it seems like its a made to fit in with the playing card site and 'act' local. I'm not saying that makes it better or worse than a place like DSSOLVR brewery in Asheville that you can only get from that one place, but it does start to make a lot of these breweries feel more homogenous as they spread their identity across regions.
June 7, 20232 yr 31 minutes ago, ucgrady said: but it does start to make a lot of these breweries feel more homogenous as they spread their identity across regions I agree with spreading too far outside of your home base, that's an odd space to play in. If you're doing that, then you need a differentiator. I've been to the Norwood Hi-Wire. Cool rooftop vibe, but definitely generic.
