I watched 'Beer Wars' and a documentary on from the History Channels History of Beer over the weekend and realized one thing ... a lot of America's roots, industry, and economy was reliant on the Beer Czars of that time. During the Great Depression, Miller & Anheuser-Busch actually played a role in ending the era of prohibition and promoted an end of the Depression by enabling breweries to start production again.

Cincinnati needs to get its foot back in the door and concentrate on this industry again ... IMO, it would do wonders.

The beer giants of today are struggling while microbreweries customer-base is sky-rocketing. We need to tap into this potential and reclaim our heritage!

BarrelHouse Brewing Co. calls it a night

West End brewery sells equipment, but hopes to make a comeback

Business Courier of Cincinnati - by Jon Newberry Courier Staff Reporter

BarrelHouse Brewing Co.  in the West End has closed after several years of struggling in Cincinnati’s increasingly competitive craft beer market. Owner Nick Sever hopes to be back next year with the same beers – but with new packaging. He just needs to find a brewery to make his product.

Sever, who operates Gary, Ind.-based Melanie Brewery Co., said he sold all of BarrelHouse’s brewing equipment and vacated its facility on West Liberty Street. It ceased production in August, he said.

Does anyone have any experience with BarrelHouse from a bar owner perspective (any past/present distribution issues, quality, etc...)?

Microbrewery planned in Columbia Twp.

It’s been closed since 2004, but the former Heritage Restaurant is getting a makeover and is expected to reopen by summer.

Bob Slattery, who owns the property at 7664 Wooster Pike, as well as the Hahanna Beach restaurant and sand volleyball facility across the street, plans to convert the abandoned Heritage Restaurant into a microbrewery and boutique event center called The Heritage Grand.

Slattery has been collecting ideas for the Heritage Restaurant building, which was built in 1827, on www.heritagecoolideas.com, the site dedicated to finding the next use for the historic building.

He said ideas coming from the website suggested everything from an Irish funeral home to demolition. However, Slattery said “90 percent” of the suggestions were to keep the building as is to preserve its history.

City considers Eden Park station for micro-brewery

The city of Cincinnati is investigating whether a 118-year-old red brick pump station and water tower behind Krohn Conservatory could be sold and converted to a micro-brewery.

A pair of developers recently approached the city to redevelop the 7,000-square-foot property, which was designed by renowned architect Samuel Hannaford to enhance the park landscape. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places.

The city declined to share the developers’ names, but minutes from an East End Area Council meeting said father and son Jack and Bryon Martin were spearheading the project on Martin Drive. Jack Martin retired from the city’s transportation department in recent years. He is an architect.

Can you just imagine how this might affect Eden Park tourism?  The Krohn flower show with a brewski in hand or "high on the hill" in the park?  It will lend a whole new dimension to our inner-city vision...

In response to Cincinnatus's post from 2 years ago on Beer Wars, here is a song from 1997 they could have used for such a film:

Can you just imagine how this might affect Eden Park tourism?  The Krohn flower show with a brewski in hand or "high on the hill" in the park?  It will lend a whole new dimension to our inner-city vision...

you'd probably not be able to walk around the park with a beer due to liquor control laws...

Some laws are meant to be broken.

The building is awesome, too. Wonder why they don't include a picture in the article. Oh, right, it's the Enquirer.

Looking at Bryon Martin's Facebook page (the son of the father-son team wanting to open the micro-brewery), I can see he is a hardcore Cincinnati lover. e.g.:

The Party Source in Newport is carrying kegs of the various beers brewed at the Lager House.  They are $150-160.  No guarantee that they will have every type at any given time though, as The Party Source's stock is chaotic.  They are just mixed in with every other type of beer so if you want a specific one I'd recommend calling ahead by at least a week.

Just received the following info via email.  This is the first I've heard of Wiedemann's coming back:

Wiedemann's Special Lager

Inaugural Keg Tapping Friday, August 3 - 5 pm Pompilio’s - 600 Washington Ave. - Newport, KY

Jon and Betsy Newberry, owners of the new Geo. Wiedemann Brewing Co., are proud to announce the introduction of Wiedemann’s Special Lager. Please join us for an inaugural keg-tapping celebration at Pompilio’s restaurant in Newport on Friday, Aug. 3. The party starts at 5 p.m. We’ll be tapping the keg promptly at 5:30 p.m.

Wiedemann’s has been the mark of fine Bohemian-style beer in Newport since the original Wiedemann Brewery was founded there by German immigrant George Wiedemann in 1870. Wiedemann beer signs are still on display at many of the area’s finest local establishments, including Pompilio’s popular bocce courts. Our goal is to re-establish Wiedemann’s as one of the premier local beers in Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati.

After tasting this fine brew, we’re sure you’ll be telling the bartender “Jeste jednou, prosim!” (Once again, please!) as they’ve done for centuries in Bohemia, the birthplace of golden lagers.

Welcome back to Wiedemann’s. Man, that’s good beer!

I remember buying Wiedemann as recently as 2003.  It tastes pretty much like Hudy Delight, from what I remember.

I bought some back in 2005 but haven't seen much since. It's probably closer to Burger than Hudy Delight if I remember correctly.

Has anyone else tried the new Blank Slate Brewing Company yet? They started in March 2011 and it is headed by Scott LaFollette. Their brewery is in Columbia Tusculum/East End. I've tried all three:

Ryesing Up: Rye Saison with Peppercorn, 8.0%

Movin' On: American Session Ale, 4.2%

Pour.... Wait.... Repeat: Summer Wheat Ale, 6.5%

I thought the Session Ale and Summer Wheat were pretty good, but I really like the Rye Saison! They were selling one or two of these at the Northside Rock N Roll Carnival this year as well as around town at some bars.

MOTR currently (as of yesterday) has all three on tap. If you are down there for Final Friday you should try it out!

I believe it's the name coming back only, not the specific recipe.  Going to be a more premium beer.  I think it is being contract brewed at Listermann's.

Brew River Gastro Pub has some exclusive collaborations with Great Crescent at their place (old Mirabelle's). Food's good (espcially the apps/small plates) and price points are good.

Wiedemann's is absolutely one of the worst beers I have ever had. I have no idea why anyone would want to bring that back, especially as a premium beer since it is associated with being the cheapest beer there is...I'm surprised Listermann's is even agreeing to contract brew it.

I had never heard of it until this weekend.  My friends and I discovered the Rye Saison on tap at The Comet.  It ws really, really good.  I'm looking forward to trying the others.

I remember reading about them a long time ago but it's nice to see them operational.  Any idea where you can get their beer?  I couldn't find that info on their site.

Well worse than Wiedemann is a whole bunch of the microbrewery stuff out there that tastes like liquified tree bark.

I'd take the tree bark any day over the watered down piss that is Wiedemann's.

Wiedemann's was shifted to Milwaukee pretty early in the 80s and supposedly the quality seriously declined. It was the beer of choice for NKY German Catholics until they left town.

Wiedemann beer returns to Newport

8:31 PM, Aug. 3, 2012

Written by Amanda Van Benschoten

NEWPORT — Wiedemann beer is coming back to Newport – with a new recipe, new owners and a new logo, but in the same tradition that made the lager a local staple for more than a century.

Created by German immigrant George Wiedemann and brewed in Newport from the 1880’s until 1983, the Bohemian-style lager was beloved by beer drinkers across Northern Kentucky, especially among working-class men.

Does anyone know how Moerlein is coming along in regards to upping their brewing operations in Cincinnati? Are they currently working on the brewery space north of Liberty?

Last I heard (through the grapvine) is that the Moore Street facility should be fully operational by the end of next summer (though I'm sure some additional operations will be starting up piecemeal until then). I'm not sure if that means all Christian Moerlein beers will be brewed in Cincinnati or if they will still be contracting out some beer... Maybe someone else has more info on this.

Work is underway and the brewery will be open and operational this fall.  All Moerlein and some Hudepohl beers will be brewed in Cincinnati by the end of the year.

That's really cool! Looking forward to Bockfest next year in the new facility.

Will we be able to buy kegs at that location or will we still have to go over to The Party Source?

Will we be able to buy kegs at that location or will we still have to go over to The Party Source?

Hopefully they set up a store of some sort that sells swag and growlers.  There is a brewery in Chicago that does this (forget the name); you can walk in to a little area at the front of the building, sample a few of their beers, and buy a growler of one you like.  It's a great street presence and community interaction point.

I don't know what policy they'd have to adopt to keep the crackheads that hang out at Shell from hogging the free samples, but it should be possible.

There will be dock sales as well as a tap room, though the tap room will not be complete when the brewery opens.

I imagine the keg sales could be very popular --- especially with UC students.

I ordered a Wiedemann while having lunch at Pompilio's over the weekend.  It was quite good.  A very drinkable beer for warm weather, in my opinion.

Taft's Ale House to open in OTR: Urban Ohio: Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine Projects

I went thru that place on a church tour awhile back. Those guys have their work cut out for them.

After the stabilization? Just curious. They've spent more than half a million on that building for roof and structural repair already.
