Because Braxton already beat them with Graeters?

Can't wait for the Mad Tree—Aglamesis collaboration!

That would make sense actually with both of them being on Madison Rd in Oakley! I like beer and ice cream, but have no desire to combine them together. So these collaborations are not for me.

I wonder what Zima would taste like with ice cream.

Super hoppy beers were the most popular style for many years and probably remain so... but many craft breweries have responded by experimenting more with other styles, such as sours, stouts, porters, saisons, etc. The idea that all craft beers are super hoppy is a cliché that is no longer accurate.

Tap & Screw Brewery opening in Madisonville

After closing its Westwood location back in February, Tap & Screw Brewery is ready to reopen in Madisonville. It will open at 4 p.m. Thursday, with a grand opening planned for July 6.

The new 7,000-square-foot space at 4721 Red Bank Road (across from the under-construction Dolce Hotel) will serve as a production brewery and also houses a 1,500-square-foot tap room.

The latter has an artistic look, said Adam Lorenz, co-owner and head brewer. That's thanks to a large, brewery-themed mural and metal sculptures created by local artist John Vosel. Tables are made of maple and Purpleheart wood, to complement the brewery's purple logo. There is seating for about 100 people.

Even better they brew near Beekman St. They occupy a warehouse building there.

Poof.  Just imagine the lifelong rifts that will be caused by failing microbreweries.  All of those family members who lent $50,000 and aren't getting it back.

Blank Slate was consistently one of the best breweries in the region. It's a huge loss to good beer, but their distribution was so small, many people barely even know they existed. Really sad to hear.

People need to think about breweries in the same way they think of restaurants. There are some great restaurants that have been around for decades, but many great restaurants only last for 5 or 10 years before closing. Sometimes a chef has a unique idea that he wants to try out, so he opens a restaurant with that specific concept, but in the long run it's not going to be hugely popular or maybe he just gets burnt out. There's nothing wrong with that. Some brewers are the same way. Not every brewery has to turn out like Rhinegeist or Mad Tree. It's fine that some brewers start with a more specific, niche concept and maybe they don't all work out in the long run.

Well the success or failure of these microbreweries doesn't have much to do with the character of the beer.  It's mostly who has the better salesmen.  Mad Tree had the Reds' account before they had brewed a single keg of beer.

^Just like the success or failure of restaurants isn't entirely linked to the quality of their food. Branding, hype, etc have about as much to do with it as the quality of the meal.

^Just like the success or failure of restaurants isn't entirely linked to the quality of their food. Branding, hype, etc have about as much to do with it as the quality of the meal.

I'd argue it has MORE to do with marketing success than the quality of the meal.  Case in point: Montgomery Inn

One of Cincinnati's largest craft breweries closes up shop for good

One of Cincinnati's largest – and oldest – craft breweries has closed its doors for good.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Someone found this post on a beer industry forum. I don't know for sure if it's Blank Slate, but it seems to match the description. If so, this is pretty strong evidence that the brewery did not "fail", the owner just needed to get out of the business for whatever reason. And since the brand itself is also for sale, we could see Blank Slate re-emerge with a new owner.

No, the brewery failed.  Stagnaro lost interest in distributing craft beer a couple of years ago and dropped a bunch of brands, but kept BSBC as it's well regarded and right around the corner.  In the spring, though, Stagnaro stopped pushing Blank Slate almost completely and keg and package sales cratered.  Scott couldn't meet current debts and closed.  He's trying to sell equipment and IP in order to recoup his investors' money.

What's interesting is if he sells the brewery and IP the new owners can go to any distributor they want.  No one wanted to distribute BSBC because Stagnaro had Hamilton County.

It's quite sad that one of the highest quality breweries in the city had to shutter, while Tap and Screw and Bad Tom serve swill and are expanding.

What I'm seeing here is that the owner designed and built the brewery just as tap rooms were legalized.  I'm not sure if he was leasing or he owned the building, but what seemed like a good decision at the time ended up stifling the brewery in the tap room era.  If he had brewed the exact same beer in a building in a hot part of town he'd probably still be going.

http://www.wcpo.com/entertainment/local-a-e/blank-slate-brewing-owner-explains-sudden-closure?page=2

He did open Blank Slate slightly before taprooms were legalized in Ohio. A lot of bad luck on that front as the brewing scene changed from a few small industrial buildings outside of business districts to centers of neighborhood business districts. Blank Slate, Mt. Carmel, Listermann, and Rivertown all opened before their taprooms were allowed.

The new wave of breweries (Nine Giant, Brink, Woodburn, Darkness, etc) are all relying on being a regional draw and local watering hole. There are a few breweries like MadTree and Rhinegeist (and Braxton to an extent) that are going for national recognition/global domination, but there probably isn't room for any more of those in Cincinnati. Blank Slate was stuck in a bad area and had to make do with what they could while the scene was changing.

I never made it to the Blank Slate tap room.  It was only 1-2 blocks away from Streetside but that newer place will probably do fine because it has a taproom and patio and I heard the guy's dad gave him $1 million in cash to open the place so he probably doesn't have much or any debt.

This lists 15 planned taprooms for the area:

If I had a taproom I'd definitely call it "Yet Another"

Ohio Division of Liquor Control is issuing new liquor licenses, including one within a 2-mile radius of OTR and another within a 2-mile radium of Mt Washington. The superintendent says they want the new liquor stores to be more similar to craft breweries in terms of design and knowledge of staff. I'll be curious how different (if at all) the new liquor stores end up being:

https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2017/08/24/cincinnati-getting-first-new-liquor-stores-in.html

"We're aiming for a store model that serves the customer and gives the customer an experience that's different and more akin to what you're seeing in the craft brewing and wine industries," Canepa said.

He wants new applicants to describe in their application how they're going to distinguish themselves in terms of look and feel, with an emphasis on sophistication and knowledge. The new store applicants must be certified in alcohol serving by the state before opening, to increase their knowledge of their product before they go into business.

Would love to have a Party Source-caliber store somewhere in OTR. Obviously it wouldn't be as big, but it would be nice to have a store with quality products and a knowledgable staff right here in the neighborhood.
