I haven't been impressed with anything I've tried from BrewDog. Apparently their #1 seller in the U.S. is Elvis Juice, which is a beer I frankly find repulsive. Good to have something of an internationally known rarity in the city, though. At least until they expand further, which seems inevitable given their trajectory since they arrived in Canal Winchester.

Xavier University has teamed up with Boston Beer Co.'s Samuel Adams on a new custom-made beer in time for the college basketball season.

D’Artagnan’s Draught will be available in the D’Artagnan’s Deck craft beer area at the top of the upper level at the south end of Xavier’s on-campus Cintas Center home during games. The beer – which Xavier named after conducting a fan contest – will have a limited release and also be available at about 10 bars and restaurants nearby that tend to draw Musketeers fans.

Another brewery will soon add to the Dayton region's busy craft beer scene.

Sonder Brewing, located at 8584 Duke Boulevard in Deerfield Township, will host a grand opening event this Saturday. The $6.5 million building is 15,200 square feet, and includes a 30-barrel brewhouse, a 2,000-square-foot taproom and bar area, and open seating areas for large parties. The facility also includes an outdoor patio area and a family-friendly lawn space.

"We are very excited to see Sonder open for business,” said Deerfield Township Economic Development Director Jim Flick in a release. “The craft brewery industry has been thriving over the years and Sonder will put Deerfield on the map as a destination for people throughout the region.”

Dayton's craft beer scene is great indeed, but Deerfield Township is not Dayton, Bizjournals. Anyways, yay for a new brewery!

Dayton media often refers to anything in Warren or Butler as within the Dayton region.

Why would they do a small batch beer in Cincinnati? This is where they would mass produced beers that get national distribution.

Craft brewery finds new home for distilling business

sycamoremillcroftrender3*750xx4270-2402-

A local craft brewery has a new permanent home to showcase the fastest-growing segment of its business: spirits.

March First Brewing opened at 7885 E. Kemper Road in Sycamore Township in March 2017. The brewery produces not only craft beer, but ciders and spirits as well. It's the explosive growth in that last category that's causing it to find a new home for its Sycamore Whiskey brand.

Sycamore Distilling is opening a standalone distillery in the 14,000-square-foot Millcroft Inn complex at 203 Mill St. in downtown Milford.

East Side brewery moving to new digs

An East Side craft brewery that got its start before breweries were even allowed to serve their own beer on site is moving to a new location, where it's opening a full taproom and restaurant.

Bad Tom Smith Brewing is moving from 4720 Eastern Ave. in Linwood to a historic Fifth Third Bank building at 5900 Madison Road in Madisonville. The goal is to open by March 2019.

The brewery's current location doesn't get much foot traffic nearby and isn't close to many residences, said John Vojtush, who owns Bad Tom Smith with his wife, Sheryl.

Bad Tom Smith is such a weird one. No one talks about them in Cincinnati, and they're way out in Linwood. Which isn't exactly a hot neighborhood. But they have a taproom in the heart of Ohio City in Cleveland, of all places. They have a Wild West aesthetic, which doesn't seem to jibe that well with the craft beer scene. I don't know, it's just an enigma to me.

One of Cincinnati's largest craft breweries expands with new product

One of Cincinnati's largest craft breweries is expanding its product selection to include more than just beer.

MadTree Brewing, in its new facility at 3301 Madison Road in Oakley, is branching into a new category starting in December: cider.

"It's something we've talked about for many years, but we didn't just want to buy a 500-pound tote of cider from China, throw some yeast in there and say we made cider," MadTree's Mike Stuart told me.

I haven't been in a few years but their beer just was never that good. My wife and I used to go a lot when we had an apartment in Hyde Park because it was close and usually pretty empty. So we could walk right in, get a beer and talk to the bartenders and/or brewers. Then the new owners bought it and it started changing for better or worse. Not soon after I moved to Pleasant Ridge and stopped going all together.

Boston Beer founder Jim Koch opens Sam Adams’ taproom in Cincinnati

Boston Beer Co. Founder Jim Koch stopped by his native Cincinnati Wednesday evening to open up the Samuel Adams Cincinnati Tap Room in Over-the-Rhine.

The craft beer pioneer grew up in Cincinnati where his father and grandfather were both employed as brewmasters at local breweries. He purchased the Hudepohl-Schoenling brewery on Central Parkway in 1997 and began brewing Samuel Adams there. He called the new taproom, which opens to the public on Nov. 15, the brewery’s front porch. Flip through the photos for a look inside.

“My family has been a part of Cincinnati’s brewing heritage for almost 100 years,” Koch said.  “Maintaining the continuity of Cincinnati’s brewing heritage by keeping open the last brewery in Cincinnati was really important to me and to my dad, who was apprenticed at that brewery when he was co-oping at UC in the early 1940s.”

I had never heard of that brewery

I visited their Hamilton location a few months ago and liked their food and beer. Hamilton is trying very hard to have an OTR-like renaissance in their urban core, and they're trying to bring in higher end breweries/restaurants like Quarter Barrel, but the population in general is very blue collar and not really supportive of that type of establishment at this point.

Covington craft brewery Braxton Brewing Co. is undergoing a $5 million expansion, which will boost its capacity and add a new rooftop deck.

Yeah, Municipal seems to be the gathering place for locals. Not the best craft beer I've ever had, but they have a great indoor/outdoor space and seem to be doing well.

Northern Kentucky distillery expanding

A Northern Kentucky distillery that's on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour is expanding into more space to give the region a new way to sample craft spirits.

Second Sight Spirits at 301 Elm St. in Ludlow is expanding into the former Wynner's Cup space adjacent to its current distillery. The plan is to open a lounge with a stage for entertainment that would expand the distillery's capacity to host 100 guests at a time, an increase from its current 17. The goal is to open this April.

Cincinnati craft brewery wins 'best new Ohio brewery'

Craft beer website RateBeer named a Cincinnati brewery as the best new one to emerge in the state of Ohio last year.

RateBeer named Blue Ash's Fretboard Brewing as Ohio's best new brewery of 2018 (though the brewery opened at the tail end of 2017, but we won't tell them that).

Fretboard was started by Jim Klosterman, Bradley Plank and Joe Sierra. Klosterman and Sierra played in a band together in the early 2000s, which is what got them into beer in the first place – they'd drink craft brews while practicing. They wanted to combine their passions for music and beer, and Fretboard Brewing was born.

Cleveland brewery opens OTR taproom, coffeeshop

A Cleveland-based craft brewery just opened its first Cincinnati taproom with a barrel-aging and coffee element in Over-the-Rhine.

LOCOBA by Platform, from Cleveland's Platform Beer Co., opens to the public at 1201 Main St. in Over-the-Rhine at 4 p.m. Friday. The name stands for "Local Coffee Barrels."

LOCOBA is taking barrels used for whiskey distilling and filling them with beer, which they'll age for 18 months or so. After the beer is aged, it'll be put on tap at the taproom, then those barrels will be filled with coffee beans from local roasters and that coffee will be sold by the cup or in bags for customers to take home and brew.

Raise a toast – Cincinnati brewery ranks among hottest in U.S.

One of Greater Cincinnati’s largest breweries is also one of the hottest in the U.S., according to a new report.

Rhinegeist Brewery in Over-the-Rhine is included in Thrillist’s “32 Hottest Breweries in America Right Now.” It's the only Ohio brewery to make the list.

To determine its finalists from some 6,500 breweries across the U.S., Thrillist divided the country into four sections and assigned experts to each. Cincinnati’s region – the Midwest – was covered by Kate Bernot, former editor of Draft Magazine, which ceased publication in 2017, and current associate editor for the Takeout, based in Chicago.

Walnut Hills craft brewery raises more than $500,000 through crowdfunding

Esoteric Brewing, which is slated to open by October in the ground floor of the Paramount Square development in an iconic building at the intersection of East McMillan Street and Gilbert Avenue, has raised more than $551,000.

^When I read the headline, I assumed somewhat cynically that it was just a case of the the owners putting their equity investment in through "crowd funding" so it would look like they raised a bunch of money from the public. But in fact, it looks like they got a lot of small investors to contribute, if this impressive statistic is true: "Abrinica said of the $551,000 raised so far from 102 individual investors about 80 percent has come from low-dollar investors of between $100 and $10,000."

I'm somewhat weary of a project that seems to be run by a marketing and branding crew, is very good at raising capital and presenting a brand image, and plans to figure out the whole brewing beer part later. Maybe the strategy is too esoteric for me to grasp. Best of luck, though, as that's a great building and a great corner that needs some successful retail and nightlife.

Do you get your name on a brick?

Three Points was also started by people with a marketing/branding background and experience running bars and restaurants, but no history of brewing. They seem to have figured it out. Their beer is good and the place is always crowded.

I've never heard of it.

Also, Rhinegeist is a marketing company that does beer on the side.  The quality of the beer is only half (if that) of the equation. You create a cool enough space and average beer, it will bring all of us in the Instagram generation out to make sure everyone on the internet knew we were there and having fun!

I'd add that Rhinegeist is also largely a logistics company now. They self distribute to an ever growing market. I couldn't fathom what kinda of fleet of trucks they have by now.

The distribution center they built in Camp Washington is testament to this.

I'd way rather put my money with marketing people rather than some poorly-socialized beardo with the perfect brew but no sales channels. One of Cincinnati's superpowers is its marketing people and is one of the reasons that CINCINNATI STUFF always seems so much bigger than it really is compared to peer cities' STUFF.

"Chicago-Style" is like that in a way as well.

I had to look it up.  I assumed that the name had some geographic basis, not absolutely nothing to do with anything.  Out of all of the new brewery names, only like 4 out of the 30+ have a name that actually means something, and I don't think any of them are named after the owner.  But the made-up names are nowhere near as flamboyant as they think they are, i.e., it's a fraction of a typical race horse lineup.  Instead it's like a bunch of normies coming up with band names for a battle of the bands.

I remember when Sam Adams appeared around 1990, and the way the beer had nothing whatsoever to do with Sam Adams or even Boston.  Throw a new label on that same beer and the beer snobs would think it's great.  Talk about how it's "hop-forward".
