September 11, 20195 yr Speaking of Big Ash, their self-serving taproom opened Friday in the former Tumbleweeds / Los Portales Mexican restaurant in Skytop Pavilion. It's an interesting concept, but a hassle when they are busy. I'll allow for them to work the kinks out and visit again in the coming months. September 30, 20195 yr Old Firehouse Brewery out in Williamsburg has closed. This past weekend was their last. I had heard that they was for sale and was having issues finding a buyer. October 4, 20195 yr German-style beer hall coming to Historic West Fourth Street A German-style beer hall is coming to downtown Cincinnati’s Historic West Fourth Street. October 11, 20195 yr Sam Adams' 'most extreme beer' will be on tap for first time ever in Cincinnati Samuel Adams' rarest, most potent brew will be on tap for the first time ever, and only in the brewery's Cincinnati taproom. Boston Beer Co. (NYSE: SAM) is releasing the latest incarnation of its annual Utopias series on Oct. 15, and in a special celebration of the brewery's one-year anniversary of its taproom in founder Jim Koch's hometown, it will be on draft for the first time ever in the Samuel Adams Cincinnati Taproom on Nov. 15. So what are Sam Adams Utopias? Koch has long argued that beer is just as complex and varied as wine, and this was well before the current craft beer craze – he started Boston Beer in 1984. He set out to prove that beer can be unlike anything people have ever tasted before with the birth of the Utopias series in 2002. Mooney recalls asking Bonder about the industry. I asked Bob, ‘Do you think you’ll ever do that? And he said, ‘No, we’ll be employee-owned,’” Mooney said. It wasn’t something the brewery advertised widely at the time, but it was a promise Bonder kept: The Over-the-Rhine-based brewery – today Cincinnati’s largest locally owned craft brewery (by beer brewed) and the second-largest in the state of Ohio, behind Great Lakes Brewing Co. – told its employees in June that it is handing over the keys through an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) that will kick off in the middle of 2020. The move will cement Rhinegeist’s presence as a major local craft brewery in an industry that grew up in the shadow of corporate-owned giants. Edited October 18, 20195 yr by cincydave8

October 28, 20195 yr Three years after legal dispute MadTree brings back old favorite Three years after a dispute with a California winery, Cincinnati's MadTree Brewing Co. is bringing back one of its original flagship beers. Oakley-based MadTree is re-launching its brown ale, originally called "Gnarly Brown," as Knotty Brown, available Monday in its taproom and in the coming weeks at retailers. The brewery hasn't canned the beer in more than three years and has only had it available occasionally on draft in its taproom. MadTree had been brewing the brown ale since its inception in 2013. It was when the brewery tried to trademark the name "Gnarly Brown" that a Manteca, Calif.-based winery, Delicato Family Vineyards, filed a notice of opposition. November 18, 20195 yr never heard of it before. The biggest issue I see with Seventh Son's approach is that it looks like a craft beer. It doesn't look like a hard seltzer. I think that would be preferred for some people who want to drink local, but I think a lot of the hard seltzer drinkers aren't as concerned about that and won't think it's a seltzer from the packaging. I also think the market share for hard seltzers is going to spike next summer and then quickly dwindle. But we'll see. The next big thing seems to be "light IPAs" which will probably see a spike next summer and take away some of the market share from these seltzers. Braxton definitely seems to want to compete on the national stage. We'll see what happens, though.

I just think the Vive branding doesn't seem consistent with the product or target audience. Braxton definitely seems to want to compete on the national stage. We'll see what happens, though. Interesting, I didn't know these were spiking in popularity. They were getting big before the haze craze (NEIPA) was getting big, but the appetite for ~4.5-5% IPAs seemed to be replaced by enthusiasm for ~6% NEIPAs (still weaker than the 7+% west coast IPAs that ushered in the craft beer wave). Maybe session NEIPAs will be the new hotness.
November 18, 20195 yr There's actually a distinction between a "Session IPA" and a "Light IPA" or "Low Calorie IPA".https://www.thrillist.com/news/nation/bells-light-hearted-ale-low-calorie-beer-two-hearted-ipa ^Here's just one example. The Session IPA tries to maintain the taste of an IPA with a lower alcohol content, but still has around 150 calories per 12 oz. The "Light IPA" or "Low Calorie IPA" also has fewer calories. The standard Bell's Two Hearted IPA has 212 calories. The 2020 release of the Light Hearted IPA will have 110 calories. January 3, 20205 yr Cincinnati brewery answers hard seltzer question with new brew A Cincinnati craft brewery is launching a new low-calorie brew with added electrolytes to meet the rapidly growing demand for better-for-you beverages brought on by the explosion of hard seltzers. Fifty West Brewing Co., at 7668 Wooster Pike in Mariemont, is releasing Quencher, a 100-calorie watermelon and lime ale with reduced gluten and added electrolytes. Quencher will land at local Kroger stores on Jan. 6. It's the brewery's answer to the hard seltzer craze. "The industry as a whole is turning to better-for-you beverages," Fifty West vice president of strategy Max Fram told me. "People aren't cutting alcohol out of their life, but they are more conscious of what they're putting in their bodies. That culminated in the seltzer boom." Bobby Slattery, founder of Fifty West, said the brewery has been working on the extension of the trail for 10 years. As the trail is now moving forward, Fifty West will be making an investment of more than $1 million to upgrade its campus. “We will make a significant investment into making our back door become every bit as inviting as our front door,” Slattery told me. June 17, 20204 yr Maybe it will be the first ever 'craft seltzer brewery' and branded under Vive... but yeah it doesn't make a ton of sense with three locations already in NKY.
June 17, 20204 yr It's disappointing to see Three Points closing, if the rumor is true. It seems like they never picked up steam. There were several weekends late last year that I was able to walk into Three Points with friends and easily get seats at the bar, while other places in OTR/Pendleton were jam packed with people. Obviously their attempt to open a chicken finger restaurant next door (CHX) also was not successful. I understand everyone's gut reaction that Braxton doesn't need a 4th location, but I actually think it would do very well. Braxton makes good beer, has great tap rooms, and makes an effort to differentiate each of its locations. The downtown Covington location is their main brewery with a rooftop patio and live events. The Fort Mitchell location is their "barrel house" but more importantly it's their suburban strip mall location for people that don't want to drive into the city. Braxton Labs inside Party Source has a much smaller brewing setup where they can make experimental beers, but also serve the "main" Braxton beers brewed at their Covington facility. Pendleton could easily become another Braxton Labs. It seems unlikely that they would make it a Vive location, but it's possible I guess.
June 17, 20204 yr I would not be surprised yet is disappointing. 3 Points had the right neighborhood scale vibe for Pendleton. I would often use their daytime co-working space for work and meetings. Also they had good beer! “All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” -Friedrich Nietzsche

The Great Recession got rid of many businesses as well and we came back stronger. Same will happen after this is over.
