June 3, 20169 yr I don't see any building listed as 108 Henry St. but there is a 114 Henry Street that appears to be owned by the same Berger's as the one in the article, listed as the owner. 114 Henry is the large building with the "Apex Furniture" ghost sign on the north side.
June 3, 20169 yr Is it going into the same building as Rhinegeist? It is going in the first floor of the historic Christian Moerlein icehouse, 114 Henry. As Ram23 noted, it has the "Apex Furniture" ghost sign on it.

July 4, 20168 yr Last night I saw a guy (actually I was about to walk in and heard the fall) stealing a glass from Rhinegeist first drop the glass on the staircase and then slip and fall onto the broken glass. Somehow he didn't get cut too badly, but it's just a matter of time until somebody gets paralyzed falling down that staircase. I work with a guy who was with a group that had a girl break her leg on that staircase when she tried to jump on a guy's back and fell off. Drunks + Staircase = Lawsuit
July 4, 20168 yr ^I am surprised that they don't use their elevator as their main entrance. It's there and available if you know about it, but it should be the default.
July 4, 20168 yr The elevator opens into the private party space. There is a second freight elevator, I think, because one time I was up there and somehow a grand piano was in the space.

July 6, 20168 yr ^I haven't been there yet, but I can't get over how fake that picture looks. It's probably a combination of the design and the materials, but it looks like they tried to build an old-looking new store with stuff from Home Depot. Looks like a decent beer selection though.

July 19, 20168 yr Brewer plans taproom, beer garden A Cincinnati brewery is planning a new taproom and beer garden in St. Bernard, Soapbox Cincinnati reports. Jon Newberry, a former Courier reporter and owner of Geo. Wiedemann Brewing Co., is partnering with the city of St. Bernard to transform a former funeral home at 4811 Vine St. into a taproom with a tavern-like beer hall and a full-scale brewing operation. July 19, 20168 yr Very sad that the lease fell through at Watertower Square, I was looking forward to being able to walk there. Its a good thing the Wiedemann brand is being revived, but I do feel like it should have been located in Newport somewhere. We have Wiedemann hill and the Wiedemann mansion, feels like a missed opportunity by the city to throw some breaks in to make it work on our side of the river.

August 2, 20168 yr No, but when I worked at Kroger in high school, I know there was a shortage of Little Kings. A few customers kept coming back daily to check for it. Maybe something like that is going on.
August 13, 20168 yr Peek inside Woodburn Brewery before it opens East Walnut Hills' first craft brewery, Woodburn Brewery, is set to open toward the end of the month, but you can get a look inside right now. In fact, you may even have a chance to try their beers before that. Woodburn Brewery, at 2800 Woodburn Ave., officially opens to the public on Aug. 26. The brewery, started by Chris Mitchell and Dennis Chacón, was built as a movie theater and has been a bank and dry cleaner before it was purchased for the brewery. Newport to OK New Riff's 'whiskey campus' Newport is expected to approve a development agreement Monday night to land a new "whiskey campus" on the city's west side. New Riff Distilling is planning a $7.5 million project to renovate two historic buildings and build a new structure that can store bourbon and rye whiskey. The older buildings will feature a distribution center, office space, space for storing and bottling raw materials, and a building to store the filled bourbon barrels. The new 17,300-square-foot building, or rickhouse, would be built so 15 bourbon and whiskey barrels could be stacked on top of each other. City officials say the New Riff project will be a catalyst for economic development opportunities along the rebuilt Kentucky 9, which will provide a direct path from the AA Highway and Interstate 275 to Newport's west side and downtown. The route terminates at the Taylor-Southgate Bridge, which connects Newport and Cincinnati. Cont "It's just fate, as usual, keeping its bargain and screwing us in the fine print..." - John Crichton
August 23, 20168 yr This is incredible news, the more whiskey I can get within walking distance of my house the better. Lets just turn the whole new Route 9 into a distillery/brewery corridor with Ovation capping the end with thousands of new residents. One can dream right? On a serious note, I think Newport and New Riff should try to get more involved with the official Bourbon Trail. I know they are on the Craft trail, but being so close to Cincinnati and CVG and right of I-75's 12th street exit with this new location this should really be more of a starting location for the Bourbon Trail. For all the tourists coming to see the Bourbon trail from the north and northeast this would be the first stop, and since it's right across the Ohio river it naturally feels like a "Welcome to Kentucky and the Bourbon Trail" spot. I think if New Riff capitalizes on this it will really help increase 21+ tourism in Newport to compliment the more family/adolescent focus of Newport on the Levee.
August 23, 20168 yr ^Totally agree. I think there would need to be 1 or 2 new local distilleries for that to really take off, but someone has to be first, right?
August 23, 20168 yr The most recent or second-most recent Cincinnati Magazine had a lengthy and very amusing article about the Seagram's distillery in Lawrenceburg. Basically it tackled the whole issue of it being the maligned "factory" that produces the base materials for the craft distilleries all around the country that pretend to distill from scratch, but it paradoxically has much more heritage and long-time employees with infinitely more know-how than the endless upstart distilleries that present themselves as being the efforts of independent "craftsmen". Unfortunately the article is not available online, or else it would be making the rounds!

August 23, 20168 yr New Riff's own O.K.I bourbon being one of those that is produced and bottled in the Lawrencburg factory, aged in Kentucky and enjoyed in Ohio... I can't remember exactly what the article said but I seem to recall it asserting that when Seagram's was bought out circa 2004 that's when the new owners of the plant started focusing on the craft bourbon market, which at the time was very, very small. The whole nationwide phenomenon as we know it now wouldn't be possible without that ownership change and what has happened in Lawrenceburg since.

Bad Tom Smith Brewing plots regional expansion Ohio real estate market embracing craft-beer craze CINCINNATI - Bad Tom Smith Brewing is cooking up a regional expansion plan that could yield a half dozen new locations and $10 million in annual sales within three years, all of it built around the story of an Eastern Kentucky killer hanged in front of thousands in 1895. “We’re going to develop a concept,” said owner John Vojtush. “Then, we’re going to take that concept to communities where it fits.” Vojtush is a Cleveland-based software consultant and serial entrepreneur who came to Cincinnati to work for Toyota Motor Corp. Once here, he re-connected with a high school friend, Sean Smith, founder of the seven-employee craft brewery Eastern Ave. in Linwood. The factory, once a Seagram distillery, has changed hands over the decades and was most recently acquired by food-ingredient corporation MGP. It is now a one-stop shop for marketers who want to bottle their own brands of spirits without having to distill the product themselves. MGP sells them bulk vodka and gin, as well as a large selection of whiskies, including bourbons of varying recipes, wheat whiskey, corn whiskey, and rye. (They also make “food grade industrial alcohol” used in everything from solvents and antiseptics to fungicides.) Their products are well-made, but hardly what one thinks of as artisanal. And yet, much of the whiskey now being sold as the hand-crafted product of micro-distilleries actually comes from this one Indiana factory.
August 24, 20168 yr ^That's the online article that the Cincinnati Magazine article cited. Geesh, I should have read it more closely, because I didn't realize that these craft distilleries are literally just repackaging the Indiana whisky. I skimmed it so quickly that I thought they were just producing some sort of base material, not the finished and final product. Also it was interesting to see George Dickel mentioned in that article -- they have been distilling their own whisky for 100~ years just down the road from Jack Daniels, but I guess they decided to broaden their offerings by repackaging the Indiana whisky as a new brand. It's amazing how obscure George Dickel remains after so many years!
August 24, 20168 yr The inconsistencies I've experienced with their beer makes this idea insane IMO... Every pitcher tells a story? Bad Tom Smith Brewing plots regional expansion Ohio real estate market embracing craft-beer craze Cont Yeah, they seriously need to get their QA house in order first. Word around the campfire is that they regularly release beers with off-flavors or infections, and the head brewer doesn't recognize the problem. I don't think they are respected by other brewers in the community. It's doubly sad because one the city's finest craft brewers, Blank Slate, is regularly confused for Bad Tom, as they're both East End breweries with B's and S's in their name.

September 27, 20168 yr Taft's Ale House planning second location Over-the-Rhine craft brewery Taft's Ale House is opening a second location in Cincinnati to accommodate soaring demand for its suds. An affiliate of Taft’s Ale House purchased 4821 Spring Grove Ave. in July for $1.745 million. The building, once a Procter & Gamble Co. lab/testing facility, is more than 49,000 square feet. It includes 5,600 square feet of office space and nearly 44,000 square feet of warehouse space.
September 27, 20168 yr This is across from the Rally's at the corner of Mitchell & Spring Grove, immediately up against the very busy railroad tracks.
September 27, 20168 yr That's great news for Taft's that they're expanding so quickly. Based on the building they're expanding to, my guess is that this new location will primarily be a production/shipping facility, with a tap room that has limited hours and probably no food.
September 27, 20168 yr ^I would guess a food truck will hang out there so they don't have to build a kitchen. I agree that they will likely use this mostly as a production facility, but should be beneficial to anyone living in Northside or Spring Grove Village. Also, this should make deliveries way easier. I'm glad they picked a spot in the city and hopefully it will activate SGV a little more. It needs more bars, restaurants, and active uses in the neighborhood.
September 27, 20168 yr More details on the new Taft's location, from the Enquirer: http://www.cincinnati.com/story/entertainment/2016/09/27/tafts-ale-house-pouring-6-million-into-second-location/91164088/ Taft's Brewing Company, 4831 Spring Grove Ave. in Spring Grove Village, will be a production facility and also house a 3,000-square-foot "Brewpourium" tap room and beer garden. The owners hope to open as soon as the April 3, the Cincinnati Reds' Opening Day, but no later than May 1. ... The project has the same designer as that original space, so "there will definitely be similarities to the design of Taft's Ale House, while maintaining the industrial feel," Kassling said. "There's a total 'wow' factor when you walk into Taft's Ale House. We want to create a 'wow' factor that hasn't been seen at a production brewery. ... Also unlike at Taft's Ale House, where food is a major focus, Taft's Brewing Company doesn't have a kitchen on site. Kassling said they're still exploring options for how they might make food available to customers there.
