On Sundays, Cincinnatians would go to church, and many would find their way to Over-the-Rhine or the West End to sing, drink and revel. Some churches had rathskellers, where beer was served after Mass.

Someone, please open a bar called "Rathskeller".  Coolest... name... ever.

The bar in the basement of Tangeman University Center, on UC's campus, is called Catskeller.  Not exactly Rathskeller or nearly as cool...but worth noting.

New Moerlein owner plans $30 million overhaul of historic OTR brewery buildings, may revive old brands By Andy Brownfield  –  Senior staff reporter, Cincinnati Business Courier May 31, 2022

Theres a bar in downtown cleveland called Rathskeller

And there used to be a bar called Steinkeller at Miami.  Not sure if it is still there, though.

Is Greg planning on moving the manufacturing part of Morlein back to Cincy from Wilkes Bar?

Although not really it's own bar, I'll pretty sure the basement bar of Lenhardt's/Christy's on McMillan is called the Rathskeller.  Which, coincidentally enough, is in a house that was built as a wedding gift for Christian Moerlein's daughter.

There is Christy's Rathskeller in Clifton beneath the German restaurant.

Is Greg planning on moving the manufacturing part of Morlein back to Cincy from Wilkes Bar?

I think he is aiming at within 10 years he should have the resources in place to move to OTR

^That would be awesome!    I'll keep buying.

Hudy Delight relaunches in cans

Business Courier of Cincinnati - by Jon Newberry Staff Reporter

Thursday, October 16, 2008 - 5:00 AM EDT  |  Modified: Thursday, October 16, 2008 - 5:00 AM

Hudepohl Brewing Co. is relaunching Hudy Delight in cans with a limited edition 30th anniversary commemorative can that should hit area beer outlets next week.

It marks the first production of beer in cans by Cincinnati’s Christian Moerlein Brewing Co., which bought most of the other Hudepohl-Schoenling brands in 2006 and re-introduced a reformulated Hudy Delight in bottles.

^Very nice.  Hudy Delight is just okay, but I think it's better than any of those national light beers.  I'm hoping that he brings back Burger Beer.  My grandfather was crazy about it, but I never got to try it before it disappeared from shelves.

Cincinnati bars are definitely a strong reminder of the rich beer history we have with old promo material on the walls.

Definately better than Bud, Miller, or Coors Lite!!!

It's still surprising to me that regular Hudepohl is not available yet the light beer is.

^I didn't even know their was a regular Hudy.

hudepohl_can.jpg

LMAO!    That is awesome!

Cedar's in Youngstown had Hudepohl on tap.  Only place I've ever seen that.  We called it hit-a-pole.

LOL @ Cedar's, awesome. Is Tommy still there? What about the Herman's or the Leone's?

I don't know, this was about 10 years ago.  I'd love to go there again.

Mt. Carmel brewery builds thick head of acclaim

http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2008/12/22/story14.html

Three-and-a-half years after Mt. Carmel Brewing Co. was born as a commercial enterprise in the basement of Mike and Kathleen Dewey’s Mount Carmel home, they’re ready to roll the dice again.

The business started out largely as a means of paying for Mike’s home-brewing hobby. They were hoping to sell a few half-barrels to local bars and restaurants. But Mike Dewey quickly realized that making beer a couple barrels at a time and then selling it in half-barrel kegs was a logistical nightmare waiting to happen.

I wish they wouldn't rename the Copper Ale, but I am *very* excited to hear that they'll be selling in 12-ounce bottles.  I always get the Copper Ale when I'm at Mac's or Dewey's, but I'd love to have a small size for apartment drinking.  Great news.

I've never had it, but I agree.  There are too many "ambers" out there already.  Copper Ale is more distinctive, and people get the point.

Not a fan of Hudy or Mt. Carmel.  Hudy is absolutely disgusting and Mt. Carmel has an odd taste.  I think I had their Copper Ale.  I will stick with my beloved Christian Moerlein.  They have yet to make a beer I didn't like.

If you haven't tried the Mt. Carmel Stout, you haven't lived.

Beer Tasting: every saturday 5-8pm @ Ludlow Wines and Gifts, 339 Ludlow Ave, Gaslight Clifton.  5 beers for $3-4.  Wine option available as well.

Wine Tasting: Saturday and Sunday 11-3pm @ Market Wines in Findlay Market. 128 W Elder St.  4 wines for $3, an additional premium wine for $2.

Moerlein buys Little Kings

By Mike Boyer

[email protected]

Cincinnati beer baron Greg Hardman, on a mission to recreate Cincinnati's brewing heritage, said this morning he's acquired the Little Kings Cream Ale brand, famous for its seven-ounce green bottles. Details on the purchase weren't immediately available.

But with the purchase, Hardman, CEO of Christian Moerlein Brewing Co., has assembled some of the Queen City's best-known beer brands. Besides Moerlein acquired in 2004, Hardman purchased Hudepohl 14K, Hudy Delight and Burger Beer brands two years ago.

"What we're about with the return of Little Kings is the same thing that we've been doing with Christian Moerlein Lagers and Ales the last four years, which is repositioning the brands to make them relevant with today's consumers," he said.

^Fantastic!

All kinds of good news on the Cincinnati beer front:

Hudepohl in bottles is currently shipping, and should be in stores within the next couple of weeks.

And the big news, Burger and Burger Light in cans will be back Opening Day!

!!!!!

I'm excited.

You're talking about regular Hudy 14K?

And I've wanted to try Burger since I was young.

It's not 14K, that is still coming out at a later date.  The new Hudepohl is a new recipe, I believe.

And I've wanted to try Burger since I was young.

When I turned 21, Arnold's had a Burger special.  50 cents a can!!!  My friends and I drank the hell out of it for a few weeks.  I'm looking forward to trying it again to see if it was any good.  I wasn't exactly a beer connoisseur at the time.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Spending may be down during an economic slump, but people are still shelling out cash for a cold bottle of craft beer.

Demand outstripped production pace at Mount Carmel Brewing Company in Cincinnati, which sold 1,000 barrels last year and expects to sell about 3,000 barrels in 2010. The company sells beer in bulk to retailers at wholesale prices.

The company, founded in 2004, had given up selling craft beer in large growlers, which were jugs of beer bought for parties. They decided to sell six-packs of 12-ounce bottles for $8.99.

Brouhaha: Cincinnati beer dealer shakeup

http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2009/03/02/story4.html

Stagnaro Distributing has taken over the beer distribution operations of H. Dennert Distributing in Hamilton County.

The acquisition gives Stagnaro control of wholesale distribution of Miller and Coors beers throughout the Tri-State, except in Butler and Warren counties. It also boosts its volume by about 75 percent, to more than 7 million cases annually.

Mmmmmm, can't wait!

New owner, 12 packs create buzz for classic Little Kings

http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2009/05/11/story17.html

Four months after corralling Little Kings Cream Ale back within his Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewing Co. portfolio of classic Cincinnati beer brands, Greg Hardman is ready to launch. Or relaunch.

Hardman, CEO of Christian Moerlein Brewing Co., is rolling out 12-packs of the 7-ounce green bottles, known to generations of beer drinkers as “pocket rockets” and “Little Killers.” It’s all part of an effort to rebuild national distribution from 26 states to 40 over the next 18 months, he said.

Here are the new designs for the 12 packs and beer buckets that I received...
