Thanks for the pics WestBlvd. And definitely welcome. We're a pretty passionate bunch here. :)

I frequently walk by this building. Are people currently living in it while construction/renovation continues on the property? The brick is really nice on this one. It would be nice to see it cleaned and lit at night.

Good lord, you aren't kidding!! And WELCOME to the forum!

Thanks for the welcomes.

Parts of the building have been occupied since the early part of May. Construction is still ongoing, however. There are different courtyards inside that separate different age phases of the building (eg 1940s architecture versus 1800s). I snapped a few photos this evening:

A friend of ours lives in the Gospel Press and I finally got to check it out today.  Its probably the most amazing apt building I've ever been in.  His apartment is very nice, a smaller 1-bedroom.  Similar in design to a Fries and Shules condo I've been in.  The best part, though, is that all of the unfinished apartments thoughout the building are open for exploring.  Every single one we saw was different.  One was 3 stories.  One had a rooftop deck with a great view of downtown.    One had an internal deck that was surrounded by the building.  Some of the apartments have entrances from the street.

It felt like a labyrinth that you could get lost exploring.  Great, great place.

And before you say it, MyTwoSense, I didn't have a camera with me.

Were the apartments that were unfinished open purposely...or coincidentally? I don't think just anyone could get in there, could they?

I don't really care for this site nor the people who run it, but this is a nice video piece of Tremont Place.

Renovation of Union Gospel Press building in Tremont continues: Whatever Happened to ...?

The historic building, where Sunday school literature once was published, is about halfway rented out, even though its redevelopment is continuing.

The $21 million project should be done by the end of the year, developer Myrl Roberts said. About three-quarters of the 102 units will be apartments, with the remaining quarter designated as "extended stay" rooms, which are similar to hotel rooms.

The 175,000-square-foot complex, which is actually 15 buildings connected to each other, had become somewhat of an eyesore at Jefferson Avenue and West Seventh Street in the trendy neighborhood.

The Plain Dealer gave a compliment and it was backhanded.  I'm shocked.  :o

They actually used the word "trendy".  I need a drink!

I was roaming around Tremont the other day and stumbled upon this building.  What an awesome place for new condos!  Are people living there yet?  How full is it?

  • 4 weeks later...

I looked at them while apartment hunting. Yes, people are living there. They are interesting, no apartment is the same as another. The courtyard and parking lot are both really good, and the price includes a lot of things, new appliances, laundry etc, but still fairly pricey and the ones I looked at were a bit odd in their layout, which they really can't control too much because of the structure of the building. There are random passages leading out to the courtyard balcony and doors that lead nowhere. Kind of interesting. 1 BR was 1100, 2BR was 1300, I think.

Whatever happened to the renovation of the Union Gospel Press building in Tremont?

The renovation, for the most part, has pleased Tremont community leaders. For years, they had hoped the Union Gospel Press building would be fixed up.

Did the PD describ this neighborhood as "trendy".  Oh My God!  I think I may faint!

I can only talk to the hotel stay units of Tremont Place Lofts but from my experience it has gone down hill fast. I have stayed there from the beginning even while the vast majority of the place was still under construction. It was always kind of a hassle to make any type of reservations and the Managers were a bit inept but I stayed there anyway since I thought it was unique and helping the neighborhood versus staying at a hotel. My last visit was over Christmas and it was a complete nightmare. It seems the units have become dirtier with every stay and this time it was gross. The entire apartment was full of what seemed like dog hair which stuck to all our clothes and the entire place is in serious need of a paint job and complete cleaning. The kicker was for two days we had no water at all. So we had to go to the nearest coffee house for water and to use the restroom. No shower, no toilet, nothing. When I went down to talk with them they did nothing but blame the city of Cleveland. These were only the most severe of issues while staying there, so we left and had to find another place to stay. We left a letter with the owner letting him know of our experience and as of today we still have heard nothing. There was no attempt at all to compensate us for the horrible experience. I think they are lucky they don't have much competition because if they did they would be out of business. I have stayed in hundreds of different types of establishments but this was the absolute worst. I would not reccomend anyone staying in their hotel units.

That sucks

Wow, sfbob, that is a terrible experience- thanks for the head's up.  I've thought about staying there before but no way now.
