Posted April 30, 201411 yr I want to start a thread on the park systems in Ohio. I am interested in your thoughts on the parks and if they meet your expectations. Which are good campgrounds and which to stay away from? New trails opening up in the parks? Best nature trails? I figure I would start off with a visit to Old Mans cave. If you like a good hike, then this is a good place for you. Steep steps and some great pictures to be had. Parking is good but bring a pair of walking shoes if you visit. What are some of your favorite places???
May 1, 201411 yr Slate Run Living Historical Farm As part of the Columbus Metro Park system, this Living Farm is extremely educational for both young and old. Have you been there?
May 2, 201411 yr Today I wanted to highlight Battelle Darby Metro Park and Nature Center. Battelle Darby Creek is the largest central Ohio Metro Park with more than 7,000 acres of prairies, fields and forests, and more than 20 miles of riparian forest along the Big and Little Darby Creeks. The Darby creeks are noted nationally for their tremendous diversity and abundance of both aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals.

Yep, been there many times. These days I drive past almost daily. The wallpaper in the house reminds me of the farmhouse where my grandmother grew up in Monroe County.
May 2, 201411 yr State Beaches in Ohio are top-optional for the ladies. I think this is the proper thread for this bit of FYI.
May 2, 201411 yr ^Can I get some ordinances to back that up? One of my favorite city park system is still Mill Creek in Youngstown, it is really a gem. http://www.millcreekmetroparks.org/

May 2, 201411 yr ^Can I get some ordinances to back that up? I almost googled to find it and then realized it would be a really bad idea to try and look this up while at work. I have heard this before too though.
May 2, 201411 yr Topless information from Columbus Dispatch 2008 and nothing has changed: http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2008/06/28/thong.ART_ART_06-28-08_B1_QEAK12C.html Its legal and part of section 2907.09 as its not included as 'private parts' : http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/2907.09
May 3, 201411 yr Remember in the '90s I think it was there was a topless women's march on the Statehouse. A bunch of strippers showed up too.
May 5, 201411 yr A view of Ash Cave in Hocking Hills. If you have not climbed to the top and walked around the rim, you should! Who's been there?
May 7, 201411 yr Today we are at the Beaver Lake Area of the Prarie Oaks Metro Park located in Plain City. Lots to see and do here.

May 7, 201411 yr A view of Ash Cave in Hocking Hills. If you have not climbed to the top and walked around the rim, you should! Who's been there? Hocking Hills is one of the few natural areas I really miss in Ohio (also Oak Openings, Marblehead/Lake Erie Islands area). It is a gorgeous park and as a student at OU, I'm glad I got to visit (both with student clubs and on my own). My only regret is not doing it more! As great as the endless block parties and house parties were, it was nice to take a break every now and then. *One of my most terrifying driving experiences was in a beat up 1984 Ford Aerostar (I think the crappiest van in OU's fleet) after an ice storm in late fall. Those hills were slick and the van struggled up a few of them. Still, the retreat was great. We had a cabin in the woods, made great food, and did some nice hiking. Hocking Hills retreats were some my best sober OU memories.
May 8, 201411 yr A view of Ash Cave in Hocking Hills. If you have not climbed to the top and walked around the rim, you should! Who's been there? I remember going there when I was 12 or and signing up for a hike that ended up being 6 miles. You know how most '90s and later middle schoolers are built and think about food and video games 24/7. It was way tough for me at the time, but I got to see all the good stuff.
May 18, 201411 yr Ceder Bog is actually private land and not part of the Ohio Park system, but it is very enviromental. This is located just outside Springfield and is a great hike. And, btw, this is actually a fen and not a bog.
May 23, 201411 yr A park which once was part of Camp Chase (civil war camp) - Westgate Park in Columbus. Here is the cemetery from those days!
May 27, 201411 yr Here is one of the area's in Pickerington Ponds. I sat on the bench and watched a gopher for about 15 minutes.
June 19, 201410 yr I was at Hoover Dam and the gates were up about 5' which you can see in the thumb.
June 19, 201410 yr I always like talking about "going to the Hoover Dam this afternoon" to people who aren't from around here.
July 2, 201410 yr Went hiking at Hocking Hills last year. Old Man's Cave is very crowded and I'd done it many times before, so did a hike from Cedar Falls to Ash Cave. It was pretty long but good. The next day we did Conkles Hollow, which I had never done before. It was quite rugged and very unique. Basically cliffs all the way. And hardly anybody hiking it.
August 5, 201410 yr Community Gardens at Franklin Park - Columbus Ohio In 2009, a community garden area in the SE corner of Franklin Park opened. Examples of classes offered are: gardening and horticulture, cooking and culinary arts, fine art and wellness. You can just stroll the vast 4 acres for inspirational ideas.

The new Jesse Owens State Park and Wildlife Area is on 5,735 acres of land in Morgan County in Southeastern Ohio that previously belonged to American Electric Power. This is the first phase of state plans to buy a total of 13,000 acres from what is currently more than 60,000 acres of AEP ReCreation Land - former coal mining land that was reclaimed for outdoor recreation and made available to the public. Gov. Kasich held a dedication ceremony for the park inside Jesse Owens Stadium - the track and field facility named after Owens on the Ohio State University campus - with Owens' daughters and Ohio State officials. Then Kasich went to the new state park and planted four trees - in honor of the four gold medals won by Owens in the 1936 Olympics - to officially open the new state park near McConnelsville in Morgan County. Once all the state land purchases are completed, the Jesse Owens State Park will be the largest state park in Ohio.

December 3, 20195 yr Dayton-area state park to receive $3.3M for major upgrade A state park that serves as a local destination for outdoor recreation will undergo a major upgrade thanks to new state funding. Hueston Woods State Park, located in the village of College Corner in Butler and Preble counties, will receive $3.3 million from the State Controlling Board, Rep. J. Todd Smith (R-Farmersville) announced Tuesday. The funding will be used for an overhaul of the park's lodge. Work on the lodge will include replacing the roof, exterior work and minor structural repairs. This is the lodge's first major renovation, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
