December 17, 20195 yr Is there a massive fire over there right now or something? Anyone else see that? Looks like a huge plume of smoke that way.
December 17, 20195 yr ^ I have a very clear, albeit distant, view of Metro out of my apartment window. Just looked and don’t see anything... My hovercraft is full of eels

May 3, 20205 yr So I've been meaning to take a pic from this vantage point for a while. I think a panorama during the day would be pretty great from the same spot (speaking of, is there a construction cam??).
May 5, 20205 yr Some pics from today. The floors are really going up pretty fast considering everything going on! And it's also nice that the construction teams have several large signs saluting the health workers at this critical time too!

Been reading up on this thread. This is an amazing project, especially for this forlorn part of town. I’m skeptical about these racism storIe’s at Turner’s projects in CIN, COL, and CLE all in a week at the largest projects in each city with large separate headlines announcing a construction halt until all workers attend sensitivity training in all three Ohio cities. No details other than racist graffiti in port-a-potties at each site. Anyway, a great hospital with a great new main campus complementing, expanding, and anchoring the area south oh Ohio City. Looking good.

Looking good. I can attest to the things on the job sites. It’s not that they just showed up. It’s that people are putting a focus on it. Nonetheless, change has to start somewhere right? agreed. The hospital and the spin-off development will do wonders for that area. It’ll look completely different in 5 years
August 9, 20204 yr It's not a good look for one of the nation's most socially segregated cities and for an institution that serves so many of the area's underprivileged. Turner Construction however is a reputable organization that will not tolerate this kind of behavior and will nip this nonsense in the bud. Edited August 9, 20204 yr by Frmr CLEder
August 9, 20204 yr Crews for projects of this scale move around a lot. I don't know that this is something that we should pin on the city, or on MetroHealth. In fact, it sounds like similar incidents were happening in other places. I'd be curious to know what actually happened, and the background story. Racist bathroom graffiti is no new or uncommon thing, unfortunately, so why are they shutting down sites because of it all of a sudden?
August 9, 20204 yr I spoke to an electrician on the job there. He said tradesmen (and women) are all big kids from all walks of life and ethnicities who bust each others b@lls on the job all of the time. This is nothing new. They don't mean anything by it. He says people just need to "grow a pair" and deal with it. FWIW. I don't plan on writing an article about it. August 9, 20204 yr Good thing Turner does not operate a restaurant. It would be closed every other day for training.

Turner Construction will not allow its reputation to be tarnished, nor be fined or sued for ignoring the situation. Nor should they; not by a few disrespectful, irresponsible, racist incidents, especially in today's environment where Aunt Jemima is being rebranded due to its negative racial overtones. It's easy to dismiss when you're not the one being offended. Whether it's a frequent occurrence or not, doesn't make it any more acceptable. It's wrong. Period. In corporate terms, it's considered harrassment. Agree with it/like it, or not, it's the responsible, respectful thing to do. I would expect nothing less from a respectful, honorable large multi-cultural corporation such as Turner. Edited August 9, 20204 yr by Frmr CLEder

As someone who works with construction workers on a daily basis, I can attest to this attitude. They may not intend harm, but I don’t think that means we should accept it. Catcalling or using belittling terms (I most commonly witness this against women) isn’t okay. You can joke around with your coworkers without using racist or misogynistic language.

October 8, 20204 yr MetroHealth set to break ground on 72-unit Via Sana project Asha FairleyOctober 6, 2020 At a virtual community meeting on Wed., Sept. 30, MetroHealth officials provided an update on their campus transformation plan. They announced they’ll break ground in October on the 72-unit Via Sana affordable housing project, they’re completing the exterior of the main hospital, and they’ve taken the first steps towards becoming an official EcoDistrict. Via Sana – which means “healthy way” in Spanish – is the first of a three-phase plan to create 250 new housing units in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood, which is slated for more than $1 billion in new investment after decades of disinvestment. https://www.thelandcle.org/stories/metrohealth-set-to-break-ground-on-72-unit-via-sana-project

December 1, 20204 yr Good news--$42M donation to Metro! "MetroHealth is receiving a $42 million gift — by far the largest in its history — from JoAnn and Bob Glick to support programs that aim to reverse health inequities and improve community health in Greater Cleveland." https://www.crainscleveland.com/health-care/metrohealth-receives-historic-42-million-gift [cross posted in CLE Public Health and Metro threads]
December 1, 20204 yr Favorite quote from the article: "The healthier that Cleveland is, the healthier all of us in suburbs are," said JoAnn Glick, a registered nurse who worked in inner-city hospitals in Philadelphia and Cleveland. "It's a regional thing. We're kidding ourselves if we don't realize that we're all in this together. So the underserved deserve to have that playing field leveled out and have the opportunities that a lot of other people have much more easily." If only all people in the region thought that way. To clarify. I'm not trying to tie politics or socialized medicine into this thread but rather point out that our region will not thrive if we have a city that is full of underserved, under resourced people. How Cleveland goes, so goes the region. Edited December 1, 20204 yr by cle_guy90 Clarify

March 5, 20214 yr Gotta love that blue glass. If that facade had been a brown color, for example, I think it would’ve felt very imposing to the surrounding neighborhood. This look feels much lighter and open despite the bulk of the building.
March 9, 20214 yr ^ yeah imo that horizontal kind of building is what blue glass is for, not towers. i don't think these are current, but nice crane views on the website: https://www.metrohealth.org/transformation
March 14, 20214 yr I swear I'm not obsessed with this building. Caught this on a bike ride Friday - actually rode up the parking garage to get this guy, it was worth the weird looks! And looking north.. Edited March 14, 20214 yr by GISguy
March 14, 20214 yr Great pics! I know there not gonna keep that darker shade on the top 2-3 floors but they should. It looks very sharp. "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
April 2, 20214 yr FRIDAY, APRIL 2, 2021 Another big new office building coming to Cleveland Despite the soft office market during the pandemic and likely for some time after it, there are multiple Cleveland office building projects coming to the fore. The latest came to light this week as MetroHealth System received proposals for constructing a new medical office building on its main campus. The new office building project is emerging as major structural construction work is nearing completion on the new 11-story Glick Center. That building, scheduled to open in October 2022, will feature a total of 270 single-occupancy patient rooms, plus a a women’s and children’s pavilion and a new environmentally efficient utility plant. Just south of the Glick Center along Scranton Road will be the new medical office building. It is part of MetroHealth's $946 million campus transformation master plan. That includes new residential, the construction of which is just beginning. April 7, 20214 yr The more I see it, the more and more I like this facade. It's definitely a step up from what we've seen across town at the Clinic.
April 19, 20214 yr Author Has anybody heard a rumor about Metro merging with St. Vincent? Just wondering
June 1, 20214 yr From a couple different angles - one from their new parking deck, and the other from the old Deaconess Hospital (Metro Rehab/Old Brooklyn) parking deck
