July 17, 20213 yr Probably an early question, but when do the round towers get demo'd. When those are gone I will have never been born. HAH!

Not to be a smart Alec, but would assume sometime after this new tower opens. MH wouldn't have capacity to operate if the towers were torn down prior to the new tower opening. The project page says it is opening in 2022.
August 21, 20213 yr As has been rumored by @KJPin the past. The best part about this will be the eventual demo of the brutalist wall of concrete along w25th. https://www.cleveland.com/news/2021/08/metrohealth-wins-approval-from-city-planning-commission-for-new-outpatient-building-a-big-step-toward-realizing-hospital-in-a-park-plan.html

October 19, 20213 yr No creativity in the design of Apex's parking garage.... "In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck
October 19, 20213 yr Gahhh! Why even design a beautiful building if nobody will see it behind a more prominently placed @!$% of a garage. This is a major design fail for the MetroHealth campus and our wider community. On "View Road" no less. 👎 Edited October 19, 20213 yr by ExPatClevGuy

I'm pretty sure the angle of that rendering is impossible for a person to actually view the site from unless they were levitating over the freeway. As drivers loop around the campus on I-71 they'll still be able to see the new tower as they do now. The "front door" is to remain on scranton and a possible green space built after the two round towers are demolished. In terms of creativity - yea, it's just a plain parking garage. I am there often as my role as a police officer plus my wife works there. That road is for emergency vehicle's only and the garage is employee parking. In no way is this garage going to br visible from the street when they move their outpatient building and not visible enough from the highway where it makes a difference. Why spend extra money cladding it? Edited October 19, 20213 yr by KFM44107 Fixed explanation.
October 20, 20213 yr 'Not for the view from View Road, but from I-71! (That its address will be "View" Road is the poignant aside.) I'll wait til its up and see what it looks like when I'm arriving downtown via the Metro-Curve, then let you know whether it affects the view.
November 23, 20213 yr Great flyover vid of the complete build out including residential. park, additional buildings, garages and current tower demo.
November 23, 20213 yr It's all going to look great. I even like the skin they wrapped the garages in.
November 23, 20213 yr ^^ Now that footage should help the "Forest City" moniker regain some traction.

Funny how all the renderings we get for projects around town have loads of trees, to make them look more appealing. Yet, when it comes to real life, only a small fraction of those trees actually get planted for said projects. Cause why bother making it look more appealing in real life?

November 29, 20213 yr Not to mention cutting down the trees right as they start to become mature.... -cough- PNC Plaza -cough- ... Is there any funding in place for the park there? Or just aspirational at this time?
January 20, 20223 yr Foundations finally starting In a couple years this brand new glass will be ripped out to make way for a massive sky bridge Edited January 20, 20223 yr by MrR
January 20, 20223 yr When they first started lighting up the new building at the end of last year, I saw the wings of the building were lit red and green. I wondered if it was just a coincidence, or if they were deliberately using Xmas colors. I now see that they are white, so must be color LEDs. A little thing, but a nice touch. I look forward to green on St Patrick’s, red and blue on Guardians opening day, orange at Halloween etc. My hovercraft is full of eels
January 21, 20223 yr I've been meaning to get the lights - @MrR awesome pic. I'll get over there one of these nights and get a night shot.
January 21, 20223 yr i think this is a more in depth view of the interior that had been posted. Having been to Seidman UH recently this looks similiar in interior finishes, very calming. Seidman is a great building. I expect even better with this one.
January 22, 20223 yr Decided to walk home tonight and this gave me an excuse to walk by metro on the way lol
January 22, 20223 yr Holy sh*t! Are those pics real? If so, what a beautiful addition to the neighborhood. It's projects like that that give hope to people and in times like these hope is very important.
January 22, 20223 yr That looks more impressive than I had thought it would. The lighting is very effective. Metro will do a lot to light up its area and extend the growing Ohio City energy.

To be fair and take this from someone who gets alot of calls to churches on the east side. Alot of them, especially the abandoned ones look great on the outside, and then you go inside and the entire floor is collapsed inward and you are absolutely amazed by the fact the building on the outside looks in great condition. I'm not saying it applies to this church at all, I know nothing about this one. Just saying nothing surprises me anymore.

Unfortunately, how many times have there been efforts to save various old structures like churches that have gone nowhere? For years, there were efforts to save the former Fifth Church of Christ Scientist on West 117th at Lake Road. There were various efforts over many years to save all or part of it. These efforts received considerable media publicity. For whatever reasons, the groups trying to save it couldn't get enough going to continue with their efforts and they failed. Upkeep and trying to keep these buildings secure can only go so far. Far too many have seen this fate. Stunning lack of vision and tragic to see these magnificent structures get demolished, but if there isn't enough community support to save them, most will meet the same fate.

Old Brooklyn is struggling with this right now. The church at Pearl and Memphis was left to the elements and landbank for several years and is now slated for redevelopment.
March 9, 20223 yr The church Metro wants to tear down is one of the least attractive I've ever seen. The steeple is expecially absurd. As a rehab, it's too small to be useful and too big to hide. I generally love old buildings; but not this one; tear it down. Remember: It's the Year of the Snake

March 9, 20223 yr I'm normally strongly in favor of preserving churches, but in this case, I don't see the reasoning. This is a below average church to say the least. It is far less attractive than the other church which will likely be torn down in the next phase. And it's for a worthy cause as well, a park which will be used by the community. Build the park.

What reason is there to keep the church? The article describes it as "disused", so I'm not optimistic about its condition. Will keeping it result in a better park? I don't think so. Even if there is a good use for a church like building in this park, the other church seems a far better candidate as it is much nicer, and appears to be in better condition. This seems like preserving a mediocre building at the expense of a neighborhood park, for no better reason than preservation for preservation's sake. Edited March 9, 20223 yr by Ethan
March 9, 20223 yr I drove past that church every week for probably 25 years. I don't think i have ever seen it in use. It is nearly inaccessible, and the mere fact that its still standing shocks me. As someone in favor of preserving everything we have, there is no reason not to tear this thing down.

Maybe it's a hall that can be rented out for parties in the park? It does rain a lot in Ohio. I'm thinking weddings, dinners, birthdays or whatever. But then again we don't know the details, so who knows.

Like I said, I can maybe see an argument for keeping one church building, provided it's done with a well thought out reason designed to benefit the park, but I can't see an argument for this church being the one that is maintained. The other church is much nicer, I'm not sure it should be saved either, but I think it is at least arguable. Also, to your point about event space, the church is currently on the planned event lawn, which is designed to take a 60' x 150' temporary tent, significantly larger than the church. Leaving the church takes away from the parks capabilities just as much as knocking it down does. In this case, a smaller event lawn, and an inability to accommodate as large of events.
