I'm not aware of a thread to celebrate Ohio's connection to popular music. This has the potential to be a long thread!

Here's a start, Mark Kozelek's tribute to growing up in Massillon.

I was just posting Ohio stuff in the Favorite Music at the moment

^ bring it on over!!! I'll sell you this thread for nothing!

^That's pretty much all that is covered by that thread.  But performers from Ohio is a separate and distinct category I guess

Holy cow you guys are good!!

The Black Keys

Chrissy Hynde (of The Pretenders)

Devo

The Raspberries

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony

John Legend

I could keep going on, but...

The O'jays are from Canton.  The National are also from Ohio and have a song called "Blood buzz Ohio"

This Soul Train moment would not have been possible if not for Cleveland's very own Dazz Band.

Dayton has produced endless talent, particularly in funk/soul music.  From the Ohio Players, Lakeside, Heatwave, and the incomparable Shirley Murdock to the more modern Van Hunt, John Legend, and CeCe Peniston.  And I gotta give a shout out to Midnight Star from Cincinnati.  You know even in the hood when you hear "Freak-A-Zoid," it's a party.

I never liked these guys but they're still around (like vampires)

I think this was some kind of local hit in the Cincinnati area in the 80s

Mad Jam by Raven 1975 (Columbus) from the album, Back to Ohio Blues

Ed Davis, Cincinnati 1979 opening for the Customs with 'Keith Richards is Dead'.

I saw this band around this time when they opened for Patti Smith at Bogarts.

When Bogarts had a restaurant....

Holy cow you guys are good!!

Yes! Very cool.

Ohio band, Ohio pizza

^OK, just checked, this is an Indiana Pizza King - not Dayton's

I am SO sorry...

Ha ha you are forgiven! KEXP is awesome and wish we had something similar around these parts.

Anyhow, some ex-pat Cincy guys are doing well in Brooklyn/NYC. [i just saw mkeller mentioned them above]

Flat on My Face by Lodestar, Springfield 1979

https://app.box.com/shared/ap1yf1u1i7

International Harvester/Navistar beinga big employer, the band's name came from one of their cabs, the Loadstar. The recording was produced by a band member's uncle, Jimmy Crain from Lima who worked on the Springfield police force after his musical career fizzled out. Jimmy recorded Shig a Shag around 1957.

The Lodestar single was pressed by Rite Records in Cincinnati or Evendale or something...

^I love that ad

Originally from Dayton, Toxic Reasons

Eventually they wound up in San Francisco

From the wilds of Toledo, Art Tatum

Bradley Kincaid, not a native Ohioan but settled here in the 50s?

He introduced a lot of folks nationwide to bluegrass & folk. He played The Grand ol Opry. His music store in Springfield opened in 1955. While I bought it secondhand, that's where my TBird came from

:-)

Loved the episode of the Anthony Bourdain show in Cleveland where he went to watch surfers in the winter.

Here are a few from SW Ohio.....

Cincy: Afghan Whigs, The National, Midnight Star, The Deele, Walk the Moon, Heartless Bastards

Dayton: Guided by Voices, The Breeders

The Whigs on KEXP after they reunited:

One of the newer songs from The National:

Cincy: Afghan Whigs

Damn Dulli and Curley are looking old.  And its really the Twilight Singers with Curley on bass now right?  Or close.  But they still sound good.  Props to Cincinnati for delivering one of the most intriguing bands of the 90's.

Twenty One Pilots - Columbus

The National is amazing.

From wiki.

Benjamin Orr was born Benjamin Orzechowski in Lakewood, Ohio, to parents of Polish, Russian, Czechoslovakian, and German descent, who actively supported his musical endeavors. He became proficient in several instruments including the guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, and drums. Known locally as "Benny 11-Letters," he grew up in Lakewood, Ohio, and Parma, Ohio,

Ric Ocasek grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. When Ocasek was 16, his father, a computer analyst for NASA, was transferred to Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating from Maple Heights High School in Maple Heights, Ohio, Ocasek then attended Bowling Green State University near Toledo, Ohio. He is married to model Paulina Porizkova.

Ric and Ben met in Columbus, Ohio, where they began performing as a duo, covering rock and roll classics as well as performing their own material. After deciding that Boston would be a better place to break into the music business, they relocated there.

Cloud Nothings is a nice, low-fi Cleveland band that has been getting some airplay.  KEXP has had a lot of bands:

I forgot about Bad Veins from Cincy who are surprisingly good live - they have a KEXP clip as well but it is from 2008 so...:

In Clapton's book he said that he moved from German Village to Dublin to get some more space. He turns up at Woodlands Tavern in Grandview from time to time to see bands. Clapton's wife is from Columbus and they spend holidays here. He doesn't like our winters.

Yeah, it ain't an urban legend.  He lives in Dublin now (I believe the same development as Jack Nicklaus).

I saw Dulli play Little Brothers in Columbus in 2003 or 2004 when he was fat.  Like seriously fat.  I next saw him in 2012 and it was pretty obvious he'd been working out with a trainer and possibly even employed a "nutritionalist".  The same goes for John Curley, who also got into good shape for that 2012 tour.  Unfortunately it appears that Dulli spent 2013 hanging out with Val Kilmer or maybe the truck drivers at my work.

That said when that guy is having a good night he's one of the best rock & roll guys alive.  I've seen him on nights when he sucked since he couldn't get the inevitable Crave Case off his mind.  But when he's on it's like the most intense thing going on in the United States of America at that particular instant.  This September they're booked for Midpoint and I'm rooting for him to come in and leave the hipsters at a loss for words.  They'll do that thing where they act like it didn't happen.

^Man you can tell that guy playing the Firebird is a serious Michael Schenker addict. That UFO shirt ain't just for show.

That guy's new, I don't know his name.  It appears that he's replacing Rick McCollum, who was the original lead guitarist.  The guy with gray/white hair played in the Twilight Singers and was  rhythm guitar #2 during the 2012 tour.  Greg Dulli is of course the original rhythm player, I'm not sure he can even play a scale, his parts are so damn easy.

Their live setup in 2012 was really impressive.  The band was sponsored by Mesa-Boogie and it appeared as though their guy or some other genius set it all up insanely perfect.  I can't tell you exactly how it was done, but each of their amps were EQ'd so that they were all playing mid -- a reverse scoop.  But somehow you could hear each of them individually but the cumulative effect was like a swarm of dudes on sport bikes.

I'm not really a Mesa Boogie guy but mid boosting is what those amps are good for. Really that's what you're supposed to do; the mids are where guitars are on their own with the bass and drums taking up the other frequencies. But metalheads backed out of the mids to make thier guitars sound like the thrash metal bands. Especially when you get into the late '80s and that super thin production that emphasized the guitars, snare and cymbals.

I'm trying to think of the name of that song that's big on the radio now where it goes "I'd rather be alone..." and you don't really know if you're hearing a sportbike rolling on the throttle or someone with a slide or a whammy bar (or all three).
