Of course MGK is from Shaker Heights...

I recently saw Welshly Arms (Cleveland) play and they are better than I even expected after I found them via the new tourism campaign...

The song "Miss Ohio" is originally by Gillian Welch but I prefer the Blind Pilot version...

and Joe Dolce is from Painesville (my apologies) and grew up in my neighborhood; although our paths never crossed in school since he's several years older…maybe for the best

"Pledge Allegiance" by Josh Eagle and the Harvest City is an ode to Cincinnati:

These other Josh Eagle and the Harvest City tunes have Ohio and Cincinnati themes and shout-outs:

That song was the peak of every middle school dance I ever went to, you could almost sense it coming, and had to make sure you were near the hottest girl you thought you could get to slow dance with you.

I looked it up to see if I'd make myself feel old, I had no idea it was a remake of a country song.

My gradeschool had a day off for "parent/teacher conferences" and they'd rent out the skating rink and send us over there.  I clearly remember the DJ throwing this on for a rink full of 8th graders:

Okay, it was the clean version, but I digress.

somekindawonderful: At about 5:01 in the video the lead singer is asked where they are based, he says they(the rest of the band) are based in Cleveland, and he is from LA. "The woods of Ohio people, if you are on a soul searching mission that is where to go apparently" says the interviewer. The lead singer seems kinda douchy, and if you look at the bands faces, it seems they kinda realize it. It's a good song though, I keep hearing it on Music Choice alternative channel on RCN cable.

This may be cheating since he's not actually from Ohio, but how about some love for Kent State's Joe Walsh:

Every time Joe Walsh comes on the radio, my finger starts to hover over the presets to change the station. But I never do change it, and at the end of the song I'm always glad I didn't.

Donald Thomas "Tom" Scholz (born March 10, 1947) is an American rock musician, inventor, engineer, and philanthropist,[1][2] best known as the founder of the band Boston. He is also the inventor of the Rockman guitar amplifier.

Early life[edit]

Tom Scholz was born in Toledo, Ohio and raised in the suburb of Ottawa Hills. His father, Don Scholz, was a homebuilder who garnered considerable wealth from his designs of prefabricated luxury houses and founded Scholz Design forerunner Scholz Homes Inc.[4][5]

His mother Olive was valedictorian of her class, and went on to become an architectural designer and a landscape architect.[4][6]

As a child, Scholz studied classical piano.[7] He also had a penchant for tinkering with everything from go-carts to model airplanes and was always building or designing.[6] A top student and a member of the varsity basketball team, he graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1965.[6] Prior to his musical career, Scholz received both a bachelor's degree (1969) and a master's degree (1970) in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and worked for Polaroid Corporation as a senior product design engineer. Scholz would then reside in Boston.[6]

This might be a stretch but at about 00:47, the guy with mustache in the center of the front row is from Springfield, OH.

Here are music videos with scenes in the Cincinnati area (particularly Over-the-Rhine) done by a local company on 14th Street called Lightborne

Ziegler Park at the corner of 13th and Sycamore (across the street from Lightborne, basically)

All over OTR/downtown and at Bellevue Hill Park

Brief images of the 2001 Race Riots in Cincinnati. Possibly more images that aren't as obvious

This one all appears to be shot inside of the now-defunct coffee shop at the corner of Jefferson and University called Taza

This year's Gathering of the Juggalos will be in Ohio, at the old Buckeye Lake venue.  Unfortunately this year's infomercial isn't quite as brilliant as previous years.  The wrestling segment beginning in minute 20 is the best part!

What does this song have to do with Ohio?  Well it's summer in Ohio AS OF RIGHT NOW.

This song features Danzig's most compelling grunts.

You forgot about this one (also a Lightborne production). It includes the Rothenberg School playground lot made up to look like a NYC playground. The "graffiti" painted just for the shoot caused a bit of a sh*tstorm as they had to be shamed into removing it. Also Old St Mary's and Clifton/Ludlow Street:

Luke Wesley is from Shelby (near Mansfield), now in NYC.

Great couple of albums including a song on his first album called "Ohio"

Always loved this "Beach Boys" song. Never realized it was actually a cover...and the original is just as amazing!

The Students were a doo-wop vocal group which formed in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1956. Although they only released four sides, two of them - I'm So Young and Everyday of the Week - became doo-wop standards. "I'm So Young" in particular became hugely popular (and durable), and has been covered by groups as diverse as the Beach Boys, Rosie and the Originals, and The Ronettes.

I don't think anyone has posted this by Songs:Ohia / Jason Molina / Magnolia Electric Co. He was from Lorain, and recorded a lot with Secretly Canadian Records in Indiana. He died in 2013; drank himself to death. What a lost talent.

from brooklynvegan today:

Ohio's been a pretty good breeding ground for catchy lo-fi punk lately, thanks to All Dogs, Tweens, Vacation, Boys, Sports, and probably way more. Yet another one is Cincinnati trio Leggy, who, like Sports, played Indie Pop Prom in Brooklyn last month and won us over at that show.

Leggy recently put out a new EP, Nice Try, which was recorded by Jerri Queen of two of those above-mentioned Ohio bands (Vacation and Tweens), along with John Hoffman. It feels rooted in swaggering garage rock, but doesn't just go for overly-aped '50s rock n' roll. Songs like "A Reverie" and "July" have a certain darkness to them, and singer Véronique Allaer has a few vocal tricks up her sleeve that are a little atypical of the genre too.

The people in Tweens and Leggy hang out a lot together, the Leggy girls are in the audience in this video:

I used to work at the same restaurant as the lead singer of Tweens, she is still the butt of jokes the a-hole managers bark out.  I told them she's playing in a "famous" band now and they couldn't handle it.  All Dogs sounds like an early 90s girl band.  Something like The Breeders, Juliana Hatfield, and Throwing Muses put together.  I didn't know who they were when I saw them play last summer and a tear almost dripped down my cheek.  It made me so happy to hear that sound again!

The best rock band in Ohio for the past few years has been these guys:

I used to hang out a lot with the singer in college listening to records and going to local shows.  I lost touch with him for at least 5 years until suddenly at age 31 or 32 he started this band where he took on an Iggy Pop persona. I guess he had some kind of quarter-life crisis!

Hawthorne Heights - Dayton NSFW

Ray Cash - Cleveland - Who is arguably responsible for the rebirth of Cleveland's national rap scene. This video features the 216, NSFW:

Cam'ron - Who had some business interests in our great state released this song about 6 years ago.

Also gives us a shout out in this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaIq-RAYK8M

Drake gives our Buckeyes a shout out in this song at the 50 second mark:

Also popular in the modern Cleveland rap/r&b scene: Avant, DJ E-V, Chip tha Ripper aka King Chip and Fat Al aka Al Fatz who was featured on a Madden game with this song

Legends from Cleveland: Bobby Womack and Gerald Levert

R&B & Rap from around the state: Lyfe Jennings(Toledo), The O'Jays(Canton), The Isley Brothers(Cincinnati), Ohio Players(Dayton)

Country: The lead singer of Sawyer Brown - Mark Miller, Dwight Yoakam(Columbus), Rascal Flatts(Columbus), David Allan Coe(Akron)

Eric Carmen is from Cleveland

Macy Gray and Marilyn Manson - Canton

Heavy Metal legends - Nine Inch Nails(Cleveland), Mushroomhead(Cleveland)

The one and only Dean Martin is from Steubenville, as are these guys:

The official song of our state is by a group from western Ohio -

who's lead singer was Rick Derringer probably best known for:

Probably not our proudest moment:

we cant have this thread go on w/o bringing a little early 1970s lo-fi boriucan soul from lorain's puerto rican funk meisters los nombres (this one is definately recorded in 1972, not 1977):

I was researching bands playing at this year's MPMF and came across Lydia Loveless. Turns out she was born in Coshocton and raised in Columbus.

  • 1 month later...

I was searching to see if anyone had mentioned Soledad Brothers and it turns out there's another Ohio music thread on this forum. Oh well, here's one of their songs...

I'd add Soledad Brothers to this thread. Even though the mass media says they are from Detroit, they actually are from Toledo (Maumee to be exact). They attained some serious attention in the indie rock circuit, and are closely tied to the White Stripes. They were featured in the documentary "It Came From Detroit" (which includes Toledo bands) which covers the region's huge garage rock circuit:
