May 28, 201411 yr ^ i dont think they grow anything on the roof. and yes thats a boston pcc car. there used to be several, including a cleveland pcc. there is an ongoing movement to revive the brooklyn streetcars. it might happen someday, who knows, but no time soon. the city shot the plan down for now. also, note the canal area is over several neighborhoods, not just red hook. edit -- the latest news on the missing old streetcars: http://m.nydailynews.com/new-york/red-hook-trolley-cars-shipped-train-buff-cries-foul-article-1.1608960 not sure why the last few pictures arent showing up?? wrapping up the thread with good graffiti fits red hook i think... now this is a very good place to stop! ;) **** i hope you enjoyed the gritty, yet up & coming brooklyn gowanus canal neighborhoods ***
May 29, 201411 yr This would be a great place to explore on a sunny cold Sunday morning. Or during gray and gloomy weather. Yet thers' a sort of funkyness going on that you pick up on. Maybe not quite gentrified, maybe sort of eccentric/old hippie or something. some interesting stuff....that old cream or white colored Buick was the model year they put the fins on the front of the car as well as the back.
May 29, 201411 yr ...and I should say I was always interested in this place or what it was about, ever since I saw the Gowanus creek snaking its way across western Brooklyn in this old 1940s' era map of of the borough that i had. Doing a quick google search reveals a lot on the place. Here's an interesting one, though I dont see the 'greening" aspect as too appropriate for the site (access, yeah, I can see that) http://www.gowanuscanalconservancy.org/ee/index.php/about/
May 30, 201411 yr i couldnt agree with you more jeffery. not to bring everybody on uo down or anything, but rob had asked about this once -- i regret i didnt do a thread earlier so he could have seen it. anyway i thought of him one of the days i was walking around down there. in the future i hope somebody goes up on the smith/9th st station with a really good camera and eye and does those views justice! *** edit: looks like this thread was timely for big gowanus canal news! NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Thursday, May 29, 2014, 4:08 PM Gowanus Canal flushing tunnel is fully online after four-year rehab The $177 million renovation of the 1.2-mile-long tunnel allows it to push 252 million gallons — or about 30% more fresh water than it could before the upgrade — from Buttermilk Channel to the head of the highly toxic waterway each day, officials said. The tunnel was partially re-activated in December, but prior to that had been completely shut down for repairs since 2010.
