Could someone explain to me why we can't seem to keep trees alive on Euclid Avenue in downtown Cleveland between Public Square and East 9th?  (and beyond?)  It seems like every year they plant these trees along the sidewalk and the next year they're dead.  So they rip them out and plant new ones that are dead the next year.  Some have seems to survive and thrive, but that's the exception to the rule.

Are they not taken care of?  Does the person planting them not know what they're doing?  Wrong type of trees?

I'm speaking from general observations here, but it seems like a lot of times cities plant trees which are still way too young to be able to handle the shock of being thrown into that type of environment. The sidewalks are dirty, polluted places and these trees don't get full sunlight like they probably should in order to mature and take hold. It's unfortunate since a nice tree canopy does wonders for most any street but they just don't seem to do it right.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess the answers are Yes to all your questions.

Now I kinda want to know just how much these doomed trees are costing us.

Actually, no I don't want to know...

"The cost per tree is likely to be $300 to $400"

Why...why did you have to tell me this?

Anyhow, I'll check UO later after I JOIN THE TEA PARTY.

If the trees are dying in one year, than they are covered under a warranty... usually.

Here's some pictures I took of them yesterday.  This is right in front of the PNC building:

Dead trees on Euclid Avenue in downtown Cleveland.

The trees in front of Corner Alley are the biggest on the street and even a couple of those have large swaths of dead branches. Kind of weird. The north side right above the on-street parking has a bunch dead branches, like something was sprayed on them.

Not sure if this is the best place for this but here it is......

I still think its an absolute shame those mature trees in the PNC plaza at 9th and Euclid were chopped down a few years ago. The plaza landscaping does look nice now, but those were some of the few trees to actually survive and thrive on Euclid downtown. Continuously planting new saplings each year will never make up for their loss.

And the trees in the sidewalk on the E. 9th side are already dead I believe.
