OK, so we've had threads on favorite music before, but I wanted this to be strictly O-H-I-O. This state is loaded with some great indie music right now, and the hip-hop scenes in Columbus and Toledo are excellent. I became familiar with a lot of indie music in this state when finding music to use in my TV show and documentary work. Most indie artists are open to usage of their music and generally very friendly to deal with. I don't want this thread to be strictly indie music or anything, but I tend to hate major labels, so I personally lean more indie. So who are your favorite current Ohio music acts?

Heartless Bastards

Aren't the All-American Rejects from Toledo (or am I on something)?  If they are, that'd be awesome, as they are extremely good!

John Legend

Lyfe Jennings

Avant

Bone-Thugs

Jim Brickman

Gerald Levert

Can't think of anymore at the time that I listen to.

For me I would say:

Chimaira- Cleveland

Mushroomhead - Cleveland

A Present Day Nightmare - Cincinnati

Milkweed - Cincinnati

Hawthorne Heights - Dayton

The best "underground" rap scenes in Ohio are (no surprise) Cleveland, Dayton, and Cincinnati.

But I don't care to hear these battle cats rap about some Lupe Fiasco-type shit.  Though Lupe Fiasco is my  _ _ _ _ _.

For current artists from Ohio I enjoy:

Van Hunt (Dayton)

John Legend (Springfield)

Lyfe Jennings (Toledo)

Gerald Levert (Cleveland)

Avant (Cleveland)

Babyface [really good cd] (Cincinnati)

Isley Bros. (Cincinnati)

Hi-Tek shit (Cincinnati)

Bizzy Bone (Columbus)

DIP SET! (Columbus and Harlem)

I don't care for Bow Wow.  He can kick rocks.  And Bone hasn't put out an album in ages so I can't count them.  Otherwise, I'd put the whole funk movement thing.

^ I forgot about he Isley Bros.  Also, I didn't know Babyface was from Cincy?

He was born in Indianapolis, got his start in Cincinnati (with The Deale, which also featured L.A. Reid, a Cincinnati-native), and still has a residence in Mt. Adams.  I bet he'll start going back there since him and Tracy split up.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Wow, I'm learning some things... I didn't even know L.A. Reid was from Ohio.

That would be interesting if he started making Cincy more of full time residence; that make two (Nick Lachey being the other) recently divorced celebs coming home to the Nati.

Thanks to ColDayMan for turning me on to Van Hunt. Good stuff...more my style than rap.

@@@@@

For the more folky/old-time stuff, Anne and Phil Case, based out of Germantown but peforms in Dayton.

For a good young bluegrass trio, Sawgrass, from Springfield.

For 60s inspired garage rock and a really really good live act, The Proffessors, out of either Yellow Springs or Dayton..

Ohio Corndaddys are fun too, more towards rockabilly perhaps (they are from Yellow Springs).

Is Sara Jessica Parker divoriced?  That bitch might make it a trio.

And L.A. Reid is from the Evanston neighborhood of Cincinnati.  But the big question is...did you know that James Brown recorded many of his stuff in Cincinnati and even lived there for over 15 years?  Or did you know Lionel Ritchie lived in Cincinnati for a period of his life as well?

Tsk tsk.  He can have Nicole.

A). Krayzie Bone's "album" was horrible.  I said that Bone Thugz are gone, though Bone Bros. are "here."

B). Sure, it's all opinion, but generally, Cleveland, Dayton, and Cincinnati have the best underground rap scene in the state.  Any hip hop board (SoundCircuit, Allhiphop, etc) will tell you that.  Though I do know Columbus & Youngstown have excellent scenes as well.  I don't hear about Toledo or Akron too often.

And the best underground hip hop scene in America is still NYC, and low-key, the Chi.

i'm just quoting this to re-emphasize

What, now you are going to tell me they aren't "true hip hop boards?"  And I'm supposed to hear TOLEDO over Columbus, Youngstown, Dayton, Cleveland, and Cincinnati there??!

there's no arabs in ohio. and by the sounds of your "oys" you sound jewish, not real jewish, but eddie murphy "coming to america" jewish

You mean Sammy Davis Jr.?

no, he's italian

Are you out your damn mind?  Columbus underground MORE prominant than Cincinnati OR Cleveland overall!??!  Dayton, perhaps, but over Cincinnati AND Cleveland?  Oy vey.

NYC invented hip hop like Seattle invented grunge.  So why WOULDN'T the capital of Hip Hop (Independant or not) NOT dominate?  Detroit has an excellent hip hop scene.  So does Philly.  So doe Houston.  So does Oakland.  So does Miami.  So does Atlanta.  And even DC.  But still, NYC and the Chi are tops.  It's almost unheard of to put Minneapolis at the top of ANY hip hop list (unless you are talking about Atmosphere fans).

Just silly.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

You do have to remember that Toledo is lil' Detroit.

i'm just quoting this to re-emphasize

Of course there are hip-hop boards. You think I haven't been to soundclick? Most the stuff is low quality shit that reaks of cheap production values. I would hardly judge any city on a free webspace. BTW, have you ever been to ttownmusic.com

It's a far higher quality indie site than what the other cities in Ohio have.

You do have to remember that Toledo is lil' Detroit. You also shouldn't forget about BG's music school. Bowling Green's music scene alone rivals most the big cities in the state.

A). It's SoundCIRCUIT, not SoundClick.

B). And Soundcircuit is NOT "low-quality" and has both mainstream AND indy.

C). You talk about not judging any city on "free webspace" and you then send me to ttownmusic.com???!  Oy.

D). Flint is also "Lil Detroit."  Does it have a bangin' hip hop scene?  No.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

You obviously didn't get my reference to Seattle. What grunge music comes out of Seattle today??? Enough said.

It doesn't matter where a movement started. They are dynamic, and move to different cities.

I'm sure there is still "grunge" in Seattle, but again, I'm not as familiar with that genre as hip hop.  In the genre I AM familiar with, I think ANY hip hop head (regardless of their tastes) will still tell you that NYC is still king.  There may be scenes that you PREFER like Detroit, that hyphee Oakland shit, or Atlanta-Houston-Miami, but we all can agree that NYC is still #1 and the Chi is creepin' at #2.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

A). I said GENERALLY people would AGREE that Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Dayton (and now Columbus and Youngstown are blowing up) are the best in the state.  I didn't say they WERE from MY opinion but GENERALLY they are regarded that by most hip-hop knowers.

B). Fatty Koo is a flop.  Cam'ron is still Harlem-world.  Bow Wow is in Atlanta and doesn't even claim Columbus anymore.  The only people who claim Columbus now is DJ Steph Floss, who is a wack-ass DJ  If anybody is going to be hot from Ohio right now, it's DJ Hi-Tek working with various artists like Dr Dre, Jay-Z, and his own album coming soon...along with Talib Kweli back to work in Over-the-Rhine. Czar*nok coming mainstream with their second single and Cleveland out with Ray Cash.

And if REALLY want to get to the heart of this, all these niggas are owned by L.A. Reid, another product of the Evanston neighborhood.

Meanwhile....

Robert Lockwood Jr. Last living heir to Robert Johnson.  Put out a live CD (recorded in Phoenix though).  Still touring.  Been residing in Cleveland since 1964.

Teeny Tucker.  Daughter of Tommy Tucker (biggest hit was High heel sneakers, Rob and Ex-Itheian can tell you about it).  Has two CDs out.  And was twice 2nd runner up at the International Blues Challenge (2002, 2005)

Collin John. Born in Cleveland, graduate of OU. Recorded with blues heavyweights Henry Gray, Pinetop Perkins, and Big Joe Williams.  Been touring with NYC guitarist Micheal Hill for the last 3 years.

Other bluesmen of note (Columbus based)

Ray Fuller (The once famed Royal Cresent Mob was his backup band in the mid 80s)

Willie Pooch (Born in Mississippi, moved to Chicago, had the band he was in breakup after a gig in Columbus back in 1966.  So Willie stayed put, got job at Buckeye Steel, and is now the "Godfather" of Columbus Blues)

Al Smyth (Recent addition to the Columbus blues scene. Good guitar player, but a clown on stage)

And Teeny, Collin, Ray, and Al will be performing next Saturday (Feb 28) at the CBA Traditional Blues fest (http://www.columbusblues.com/TF.htm

I'm sure many cities sell over 200,000 records.  For example, Memphis with their huge, big selling underground scene.  Ditto with Slim Thug and Paul Wall for Houston before they made it big.  I didn't say I didn't like Atmosphere; I'm just saying it's silly to put Minneapolis as the top underground hip hop scene in the country.  I don't care WHAT hip hop you like; that's just silly.

Hi-Tek actually is near the end of his career. He's had many, many commercial flops, but I do personally think he is awesome.

A). He's signed to AFTERMATH

B). He's doing MORE tracks for the Game, 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Common, etc.  I'd HARDLY say he's near the end of his career.  It is almost MORONIC to think that.  That's like me saying "Kanye West is garbage.  Nigga's done.  He can't put out no more hit records."

Well, it's truth.  They ARE the best.  I give props where props is due.  That doesn't mean I PREFER them.  Though in reality, Columbus and Cincinnati are my favorites in terms of hip hop.

No way in hell. Atmosphere ALONE has sold over 300,000. I was referring to a single artist, not the whole label.

Are you aware how much cake Slim Thug, 3-6 Mafia, and Paul Wall sold before they made it big?  Are you aware that Juicy J sold over 2 million in INDEPENDANT SALES?

Personal albums can change.  Hell, Kanye's did.  All Hi-Tek needs to do is put a collabo of stars on that shit and it'd sell.  But he said he's too busy to make an album so I'm not surprised.

And they signed to major labels. They have nothing to do with "current" underground. That's the distinction between Minneapolis which is true "underground" (indie) and Houston and Atlanta (major label factories).

A). They are from Memphis.

B). Hypnotized Minds is not a major label.

Well, John Legend atleast acknowledged Springfield at the Grammy's.  Usually, rappers will acknowledge Ohio.  We need more "mainstream" rappers for Ohio to really blow up.

I saw Hi-Tek and Talib Kweli open for Trick Daddy at a free concert on Miami Beach in 2002 that provided a soundtrack for a Tommy Hilfigger fashion show...it was completely mediocre but also completely free and I think the back of my head got on TV.  C, I also saw your pets Ordinary Peoples last fall but did not find them too impressive.

As for Ohio band most likely to get signed and be playing Saturday Night Live next year at this time that would be Southeast Engine.  They are simply too similar in sound to what is going on on pop radio, and also too much better than any of those clowns for it not to happen.  Adam Remnant is truly a fantastic songwriter and I wish them the best, although they are not my style.  They attract tons of girls to their shows but if your usual kill move is inviting a young lady back to your dorm room to hear you strum a few sensitive chords, you are going to lose this night.  You could never be as sensitive as these guys.

Also it is remarkable that GIL MANTERA'S PARTY DREAM has not gotten famous by now; they are easiliy the most outrageous thing to come out of northeast Ohio since Marilyn Manson, although they are much more in line with Devo.  I saw them twice in 2003 but unfortunately haven't seen them since.  On their CD "Once Triangular" is is my friend Ron cackling in the audience right after Gil says between songs in his Andrew Dice Clay accent "Okay I'll fix my own asshole then -- I'm Oprah." (as an aside, the one and only time I was able to pull off that joke with a straight face at a party I got laid within the hour).

Meanwhile, the greatest rock band in the world is WE MARCH, Athens' own.  If you like The Stooges you will love this band.  I worship these guys.

If you are looking to patch things up with your old lady or find a new one be sure to go see THE ROYALLES.  They play mostly the classic R&B covers, you will most likely find yourself dancing with a suddenly horny 40 year-old woman if you aren't quick about snatching up a shy young one by the second song.  The lead singer of this band is a bartender at Tony's.

And if you are in Athens be sure to check out THE HEARTLANDERS.  They rarely play so pay attention.  They are a tongue-in-cheek crack-smoking (really) outlaw country outfit, they play Waylon, Merle, Hank Jr., and the occasional country Rolling Stones cover like Dead Flowers or Faraway Eyes.

Other hard-rocking bands in Athens include Untamed Pony, Dragline Brothers, Dropdead Sons, Schwienhunden, Skeletonwitch, and Dirty Johnny & the Makebelieves.  The Snails are another band that girls seem to like in large numbers and are lead by Chris Monday who is a great songwriter.  Another band that could go somewhere if they'd put down the 'pipe.

>Outkast led Atlanta

Shit, nobody remembers MC Shy D!

Also, I have not heard John Legend's non-hits, but I think he's by far the brightest hope for contemporary R&B (someone who actually deserved their Grammy); R. Kelly needs to quit wasting his prodigous talents on songs about teen love, gay love, etc. and grow up.  He is a brilliant, brilliant songwriter and brilliant singer and to see him wasting it on this crap.  R&B has been stagnant for 20 years (witness every R&Bish American Idol), maybe Legend will class it up and move it forward.  Chris Brown(?) or whoever that little twit is in BET's top 10 right now is exactly what BET and the world doesn't need any more of.

A big omission from Ohio is O.A.R., since we are covering all Ohio acts.  I actually like some of their songs.

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

I f*cking loath Emo, I'm afraid from what I remember your pals Break of Day might have been pop-punk-emo.  I remember I saw them once but can't remember what they were like exactly because I'm blurring them with 1 or 2 other bands I saw in passing.  I had the misfortune of going to school for a year in Kansas City with the bass player to early emo heroes (homos?) The Get Up Kids before they were famous, before they toured europe with Green Day, blah blah.  That band f*cking sucked, I saw them when they were playing for 8 people in a coffee shop basement and they sucked, sucked, sucked.

The primary metal bands in Athens are Skeletonwitch and Mutilitia, that guy Jimmy who is a doorman down at The Junction used to play bass for Skeletonwitch.  He supposedly stabbed someone on stage but I didn't get the accurate story.  I did see him kick the shit out of some Puw-Purr's black dude in front of Casa last year on the sidewalk ice.  Mutilitia plays 80's Metallica style long-form metal whereas Skeletonwitch plays tongue-in-cheek mystical speed metal.  A band that also rocked who broke up last year was Tarantula Downpour.  Metal is definitely back on the rise and there has been a whole lot of innovation in it (unlike, say, R&B) since it went back underground around 1995.

Unfortunately youngsters like yourself have a different notion of what punk is than we old timers, everything labeled as punk that's on the radio or TV these days is hated by the real punks who are forced to operate on society's lonely outskirts.  We March is huge in the underground punk scene, I have seen them repeatedly clear rooms of people who quite literally leave shaking in fear.  The band supports themselves entirely off of the guitarist's girlfriend who dances down in Parkersburg.  They definitely have potential to go down as legends.

As for jam bands in Ohio Guest is one that has not been mentioned who I think is pretty good.  I'd go see them and I generally ignore the jam band scene.

Why does C-Dawg Njaim's have the need to compare Toledo to Cincinnati?  Most people in this county don't even know where Toledo is located, it is a nice town and I when I passed through I thought it had potential but to compare the two cities in any category is laughable.  Urban Ohio is about unity of Ohio cities not dividing them.  Please stop referencing other cities to prop Toledo up, it only reflects bad on Toledo and makes you lose credibility in what you say.

Ohio's underground hip-hop scene is weak. No offense to Columbus but hip-hop is not one of thier specialties.    At least Bow-wow represents though. Ohio needs more mainstream people, I dont listen too much underground (hence the name underground) but sometimes hear some good demos.

Cleveland HAD a good rap scene...in the 90's, Bone thugs was probably the biggest thing to come out of there. I would assume Cleveland or Cincy to have the best underground hip-hop scene in Ohio by default simply because the have the most black people which equates to more acts. But I dont know any mainstream artist that rep those cities.

I was glad to see Lyfe rep Toledo on the Jimmy Kimmel Show once, and someone stated Legend rep Springfield. Outside of Bow wow these are the only two I see rep thier cities.

Here's some in Toledo's underground scene, you can google audio and listen to some.

Hip-hop definatly goes across all cultural backgrounds now but I think Ohio is late in riding the wave. I dont feel whites in Ohio have embraced it to the point of becoming artist like more multicultural cities (i.e. LA, Detriot, ATL, NY, HOU) and we dont have that many hispanics. That's why I made my assumption.

I used to know everything about hip-hop mainstream and underground from release dates, beefs, lyrics, etc. Now I barely tell somebody whose even popular. Now I listen to more artist like Common, Talib Kweli, The Roots, etc. Ludacris is probably the only really mainstrem hip-hop artist that I would listen to now.

Bingo.  Ya win the prize.  There aren't that many white/Hispanic rappers coming out of Ohio, so the underground movement in Ohio is still primarily African-American or Puerto Rican.

I've been to Nati over 20 times now and have been to almost every neighborhood in the city, and have dozens of friends there.

Again, I highly doubt you've been to almost every neighborhood in the city as not even Montecarloss, who lives 20+ miles away, has seen almost every neighborhood.  I just hate it when people say "Oh, I've been there plenty!" like they know the damn place.  What's next?  Me saying "Oh, I know Detroit like the back of my hand!  I worked there for the summer, got family, friends, etc.  I KNOW Detroit!"  Uh huh, ColDay.  Right.

You are right as much as I have seen, photographed and toured, I don't know if I can claim visiting all 52 neighborhoods.  I still haven't been to Fay Apartments :(

That's sad, but true.

Well, back in the day when they where still around, I did like the Greatfull Dead, did see them play live in California, outisde.  The basis for this jam band stuff, I think (and the Allman Brothers too).

For local jam bands one of the Dayton ones..The Maji...was pretty good..I heard them last summer.

"I don't listen to mainstream, I listen to underground stuff like Atmosphere."

He's like the lazy man's underground hero. The people just recently introduced into underground hip hop usually champion him, as if there aren't other acts.

Atmosphere so-called underground albums get reviewed in Entertainment Weekly

The best album this was year was from Atlanta, Cunninglynguists - A piece of Strange. Then there is GZA - Grandmasters, Cage, Little Brother, Sean Price, Buckshot,
