I will try, if i do i will leave early before UC.

hello- I am going to try and come for part of this to say hello. Is the majority of the group going to Great  Lakes? That sounds like a nice spot to pop in, have a beer and say hello.  Also is anyone bringing a non forumer? I realize all are probably welcome, but if my spouse comes I wonder if he would be bored? would there be anyone else there for him to talk to (discussing no doubt "why on earth do they spend so much time on the internet") ? Is there a secret handshake????  or am I thinking of a Trekkie convention?

That would be great if you could stop by and I'll be happy to buy your (and your spouse's) first beer. I imagine most of us will go to Great Lakes (not that it's going to be enforced or anything).

My S.O. may show up at some point and he's not a forumer. He met us for lunch at the last meet and enjoyed himself. It's really not any different from any other interest group where the spouses/S.Os tag along - they might not relate to *everything* but they have a good time seeing us among other geeks. I have to admit - when I explained to my S.O. about the forum, it was like coming out - again (if that makes sense). He was just glad that architecture/cities was my hobby rather than being a Trekkie!

Honestly, everyone is usually really easy to get along with. I've been to meets in other cities and the extremely rare anti-social type that might show up, disappears within the first hour. At those same meets, other forumers have brought spouses/S.O.s and everyone had a great time. Sure, there were some forum references that they didn't get, but outside of this forum - we all have real lives (gasp!) and it's usually easy to find something to relate to (beer, food, jobs, sports, you name it).  No secret handshakes, other than clinking a pilsener (filled with your beverage of choice) and saying "cheers!"  :-)

I have to admit - when I explained to my S.O. about the forum, it was like coming out - again (if that makes sense).

Really? Is spending several hours on-line debating how a bridge realignment might effect land value, transit patterns and downtown growth potential something that might make your S.O. pass some character judgements about you and your relationship?

Well...yeah, I guess I can see how exposing your "forum" life might give you a moment's pause.

yay, almost there!

Back from 5 months in Paris and I will be there tomorrow!  I miss French food...

I'll likely make the Downtown part...

you can mark me down as a maybe for the daytime tour.......however if anybody would be interested I am fully stocked with some great Cleveland and Michigan brews and would like to extend an invitation to all UrbanOhio forumers an official after tour party. I also have room for overnight boarders that don't want to deal with late hour traffic or that are just too plain drunk to drive home. Lemme know.

By the way, does everyone know that the Murray Hill ArtWalk is going on this weekend?  Little Italy should be bumpin!

From Cleveland.com:

Little Italy celebrates the arts during the 27th Annual Murray Hill ArtWalk. Cleveland's longest running artwalk opens its streets for a weekend of fine art, music, and food. Visitors will enjoy special weekend events and fine art exhibitions. This summer event is more than an art walk, it's a tradition.

^ Nice! I didn't know. Bad UrbanOhioan.

I hope some of you out-of-towners were downtown tonight (Friday). The rain moved out, the skies cleared, the crowds came out in force and the fireworks at Jacobs Field were great (I heard the game sucked tho').

See ya tomorrow.

yes, the game sucked and the fireworks were freaking out my new puppy all the way over here in Ohio City!

While I only showed up for the great lakes part of the the tour (what a shock, no?) It was nice meeting/chatting with  who I got to -ie Mayday,X, Mister good day, KJP,  musky, and musky jr ...and briefly coldayman, who really should smile in his pics, because it becomes him. Sorry I didnt get to meet everyone, such an interesting bunch. Anyhow, I hope someone post pics of the tour and any afterpartys -if applicable. Now that I have some names to faces, I will see you in the hood I am sure. cheers!

It was nice to meet everyone, too.

Sorry I had to book out early, musky jr. was getting tired of walking and was pretty sure he had an appointment with his bicycle in the afternoon.

I almost had him convinced to go the east side just for the train ride, but after lunch he changed his mind.

It was nice meeting you all, had a great time!

I don't smile in my pics?!? :(

Had a great time!  Everyone was really nice.

It was a very enjoyable day, and I was glad to meet those of you who did attend. Thanks to MayDay for being a very good tour host. The city looked great amid changeable weather conditions, and was glad to see the crowds out and about in Tower City, Ohio City and University Circle/Little Italy. Even though a quick downpour soggied us a bit (including MayDay's hair! :-o ), a rainbow above the University Circle Rapid station was a nice ending to the day.

It was indeed a delightful experience. Thanks, all!

yes, well done...even though I only made it for lunch...I was impressed with the number of people who turned up!

MayDay, do you have any estimate of the total number of people who joined throughout the day?

I was really looking forwward to attending, but as things went the night before at the fire station, we were hammered with runs all night...so I got home andd took a slight nap....and unfortunately slept through most of it!  I am such a slacker...hopefully there will be a next time, I would have loved to have met you guys!

Yeah same here, Some circumstances out of my control made me miss the meet.  I was looking forward to learning more about the city in which I just moved too.  Ah well, always next year.  Is anyone going to post pics of the meet?

Do you guys have smaller meets throughout the summer?  Being a teacher, in 4 days I am going to have A LOT of time on my hands.

@JDD - don't feel bad, in your line of work you earn every bit of rest that you get. Hopefully next time :-)

@musky - no problem, musky jr. was quite a trooper and I'm glad we got to meet you both!

@Mister Good Day - I counted about a total of 20 people during the peak, and we averaged around a dozen by the time we were done.

@jar3232 - I think we probably will have a few small meets - they may end up just being a happy hour somewhere but y'know, I don't see anything wrong with that!  :-D

I had a really good time yesterday. Glad I ventured east from Chicago, even though I lost my sunglasses somewhere along University Circle!! Looking forward to my next time in town.

Mark

Sounds like you all had a good time.  I really wanted to come, but my schedule for the next year is insane, so free time is hard to come by.  Certainly hope to make it to the next one.

All right folks, it's been several days already.  Make with the pictures!

(Impatient because I wasn't able to attend.)

Don't have a hissy-fit! I'm working on them.

It's not like I have a life, or anything; that hasn't been the case in years. It's just that today I had to mow lawns to pacify the neighbors, and spent a considerable amount of time being available during the installation of my FIOS connection <<brag>>.

I am eager to get them up, now. I want to see how much faster the upload goes.

i don't even know what a FIOS connection is......

^

Don't feel bad, I didnt either.  But now I know it's a real fast internet connection  :)

It's Verizon's name for their fiber optic internet connection. They finished running lines throughout the city last year, and they've been promoting it heavily. They offered a first-year price that's less than I was paying for DSL, for 5mbps download / 2mbps upload, with free installation and free wireless router. In the future they'll be making DirecTV available, too. I could have paid $5/month more and gotten 15mbps downloads, but don't need that much speed just now.

It's about 3x faster than my DSL was, enabling me to access the spam in my inbox much more quickly and waste time on internet forums more efficiently. My basement is beginning to look industrial.

You bragging or complaining? :-)

Yes :-D

Ironic, ain't it! The young whippersnappers are the ones who are techno savvy, and old guys are the ones who need the speed to make up for how slowly we move.

I'm thinkin' about buying a really fast car to compensate for my slow reflexes! :-o

Pope Edit: Tentatively set for June 2nd

Any time after May 15

Graduation!!!

I'd prefer to get this in before the middle of june.

Just throwing out June 2nd as a potential date for the formal "big meet".

Also - on Wednesday, May 9th, BuckeyeNative001,  a forumer from skyscraperpage.com (and I think he visits here as well), will be visiting Cleveland for the day. If anyone wants to meet for lunch and a quick tour of downtown interior spots (Federal Reserve, etc.), let me know via PM.

what is it with every forum meet occurring on my birthday?

But yet, June 2nd is a good date for. I'll have kegs in my backyard later that evening.

Looks good to me - for now.

Any other input out there?

June 2nd sounds good to me.  We'll bring little party hats, a cake, and candles for you, Pope.  We can wear the hats as we explore Cleveland- perhaps this year would be good for a tour of Central or Glenville!

well i didn't get a cake last year, so my expectations are low.

I want to come again!  Enjoyed the Summer '06 Meet!  My sis, uncle, and myself went to GLB for the December meet but we I couldn't find anyone!  I was there 30 min. after we said it'd 'begin'.  Anyways...

1 more month and I'm out of here!

Has there been a location selected yet?

Zocalo? Flannery's? the Arcade? ...the Library?

we almost always start at the small fountain at the northern end of the tower city mall (by the footlocker and carvel)
