I'm seeing a ton of chatter on facebook from residents of the "Historic west side little Italy" that is W 67th & 69th.  This area goes berserk with fireworks every year but apparently Councilman Zone and the police have issued warnings/requests to residents to tone it down this year.  Seems odd considering the city used to park a dedicated firetruck down there for their displays - they shut down the street, built a platform to launch fireworks from, etc.  Now the city is telling them to cut it out?  Everyone seems to be pointing fingers at a couple squeaky wheel residents who don't like the displays and but the long time residents say it's a longstanding tradition and they'll gladly pay a fine before they give up that tradition.  Should be interesting to see how this shakes out considering Zone's house is right on 69th.

Oh man.  First time I went over there was about 1994 and I marveled at the militant precision the guys with the sweep brooms had cleaning the street.

My sister has lived over there N of Detroit for sometime.  She usually comes over to my house to sleep on the 4th to get away from it all.

I went for the first time two years ago, and it was awesome.  Tried to go again last year, and it didn't seem like anything was happening, so I'm wondering if they got the same kind of warning.

I don't know what to make of it.  I enjoyed watching the fireworks displays over there the last several years.  They literally put the City's display to shame in size & duration.  You're right though, last year's was very tame.  Not sure if someone got hurt or property was damaged or the city leaders just decided it was too out of control or what.  It was pretty cool though

There is a lot of beautiful new construction and rehabbing going on in that area.  Maybe a property owner became concerned.

What about the people that have lived there for a long time?  Don't they have properties they are concerned about?  IMO, that "new people" or "new construction" is not an issue but an excuse.

Personally, I believe this is how neighborhoods are "white washed" (not racially) and lose their identity and cultural flare that makes them unique.  AKA, suburbanized and disney-fied.

From a safety services point of view, I get it.  I've seen many injuries and I education should be apart of this.  The council person, residents and local business should come together to compromise on how the neighborhood can carry on a long standing tradition in a safe environment.

Is there a lot of new construction & rehabbing?  Where?  On 67th & 69th, I'm only aware of a single new home (right across from Councilman Zone) and nothing really in terms of renovations.

I was just trying to come up with a reason for the need to change.  Maybe people who have lived there a long time are just more comfortable with such things.

You're not saying that someone who has spent a lot of money has no right to worry because they haven't lived there long enough, are you?

Not at the least bit.  what I am saying is why would someone who bought think their property is more relevant than home owners who've been there for a while?  If you're a home owner, I would ike to think you care about the overall quality of your property as well as your neighbors.

How were they?

They were shut down this year.

Speaking of fireworks... have you seen this video making the rounds? Very, very cool

^^is there a chance they just moved over towards 78th st studio? Seemed like a rather large show over there I had not seen in yrs past

They were shut down this year.

It was next to nothing over on 67th & 69th.  I was at a party on 67th and there was one little blast that went off after the city display but that was pretty much it.  76th on the other hand looked like Baghdad under siege...

^ I saw a display in the distance that looked like it was being shot off in a line, and not one spot so I figured it was west 67th. But it appeared to be slightly further than the battery park sign so I couldn't figure out where they were coming from. Seemed like a great display that lasted very long. The Cleveland display was quite disappointing this year.
