Since Cincinnati been getting a lot films here lately (Ides of March, Carol, Miles Ahead), I figured we could use a central thread to discuss this.

Main Street and Walnut Street were both closed from Central Parkway to Liberty last night from 7pm to 7am for filming a chase scene. They will be closed again tonight. I'll post a video when I upload it.

<a href="http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2015/04/13/james-franco-picks-cincinnati-for-new-movie.html">"The Goat", a new film produced by James Franco, will be filmed in Cincinnati.</a>

What's interesting to me is that this is NOT a period piece. It's based on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Goat-Memoir-Brad-Land-ebook/dp/B000FC0ZI0/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8">a contemporary memoir by Brad Land</a>, set at Clemson University in SC. So... either this is a very loose adaptation (changing the location/era), or Cincinnati has enough generic settings to pass as modern day Clemson). Either way, it's good news that Franco's production company (they did Carol and The Blunderer) keeps coming back to Cincinnati.

Unlike many of the movies recently filmed in Cincinnati, Marauders will actually be set in Cincinnati. The director tweaked the script to take place here after seeing our architecture.

Originally set in Chicago and its suburbs, Miller tweaked the script to showcase Cincinnati’s rich architecture and distinctive buildings, including the Dixie Terminal on Fourth Street and Over-the-Rhine’s brewery tunnels.  Cate Blanchett’s “Carol” and Don Cheadle’s “Miles Ahead” movies last year used Cincinnati to replicate New York City.

“Once I got to Cincinnati, and saw how much I loved the city, and how much I loved the buildings and the architecture, it was clear to me that the movie had to take place all in downtown,” Miller said. Filming started Friday. It is scheduled to wrap Oct. 16.

^I have a feeling this will be a direct to DVD movie. Bruce Willis does this a lot now. He spends a few days shooting a small part that can be used to market the movie, gets paid, then it shows up at Redbox or on demand. With a cast including Adrien Grenier, I'm sure it's DVD.

On the flip side, Carol, the Cate Blanchett movie has been getting rave reviews. Entertainment Weekly had a write up of Carol in their fall movie preview issue. They spoke to the location manager about shooting in Cincinnati and she said Cincy was "a wealthy town" because of all the country clubs they shot at. The director of photography mentioned that it was like "a time warp" because it reminded him of a different era, including the people of Cincy who were extras. I wasn't sure if that was a compliment or an insult.

With a cast including Adrien Grenier, I'm sure it's DVD.

Now THAT is good shade!

I'm hoping its not just direct to DVD, Cincy needs to build its reputation as a city with gorgeous old architecture in any way possible.

The first trailer for Miles ahead is out:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bvt9LU45ruc

There are two very short clips of Main Street in that trailer. This one is at Main and Woodward where they dressed up a vacant storefront as a diner. (The other one shows Main and 13th where GOODS is now located.)

And the new Charlie Kaufman film, Anomalies, takes place in Cincinnati. Critical acclaim and Cincy seems to go hand-in-hand lately.

Though that film did very little to make Cincinnati a distinct place and kind of joked about how little the town was known for - chili and the zoo.

One character from Akron said in an LA style I just took "The 71" down. I laughed out loud. Might as well had complained about traffic on "the 405" as well.

It was a pretty good movie though :)

It's called Anomalisa, though I can certainly imagine Kauffman writing-directing a movie called "Anomalies".

To be fair the movie also takes place in 2005. What exactly was going on in Cincinnati of much distinction at that time?

You are absolutely right there. Cincy was pretty miserable back then.

Not sure if this is relevant or not, but I was watching "Just Friends" with Ryan Reynolds, Amy Smart and Anna Faris and I see this in one of the shots ... I looked up filming locations and there were 4 different cities, 3 were in Canada and the 4th was in LA. Why in the world would there be 2 banners in the movie with SW Ohio cities? lol ... I could understand if the movie was supposed to take place in Cincy, but it's supposed to take place in LA and NJ?

Those are a common Hollywood prop and are actually in dozens of movies for whatever reason. I've seen them in many locations, mostly in urban apartments, lofts, offices, etc. A funny random connection to Cincinnati. I forget what studio has them in its prop collection but they make their rounds to various movies.

I think those same props are in "What Women Want"

hey thats pretty cool they use those cinci related props like that in stuff. i would imagine the writers need to be careful to remember that as it would always imply the character has cinci roots.

Honestly the amount of people who would know what those are referencing is minimal. Most probably wouldn't even read them.

It's no different in my mind to someone having something that relates to the subway in New York or the London Underground or Paris Metro. I know many people who have artwork relating to transit systems in cities they've never visited. Props in movies seem to follow this same trend in having transit related artwork that doesn't necessarily have any relation to the characters themselves.

A shop on Fourth Street currently has them for sale. I just went by earlier. Forget which shop it is.

It was probably the Fabulous Frames & Art store: http://fabframes.com/

I have also seen those (or very similar ones) for sale at MiCA 12/v in OTR.

^ I wonder what parts of town they'll use as stand ins for the ghettos of Compton?

^ Yeah, we don't really have any areas that resemble CA ghettos. Small single family homes, closely packed together with little postage stamp sized front yards. Houses usually made of stucco, not brick. Maybe some parts of Roselawn or Bond Hill would work? Or Lincoln Heights?

Mexican duck Creek? That's the only area in the whole region that has buildings like socal

Best opening shot in the history of cinema. Ton of DT in this trailer. Goin' be epic.

Reminds me of Chicago

The film was intended to originally be set in Chicago so that makes sense.

Loved this Cincago preview!  However, one office shot (1:36) looked like it came from somewhere else, possibly a studio background. (right?)

Edit: whoops, misread the time stamp you mentioned. Its the Atrium tower that has its setbacks facing east (can't recall which number that building is).

Looks freakin awesome!

The saddest part is that people who aren't from Cincinnati will be like, "Whhhaaaaat that's Cincinnati?" I thought it was some $hithole in the south.

Even in the trailer it's clear that Cincinnati is like a mix of Chicago and Brooklyn.

Yorgos Lanthimos is a very good director. The Lobster was a great movie and Dogtooth is actually one of my favorite movies of the last 10 years or so. I'm looking forward to this movie more than any of the others recently filmed here, especially since Carol ended up being way overrated IMO.

Expect gunfire sounds, traffic snarls as Bruce Willis movie starts filming downtown

Filming of the new Bruce Willis movie "Reprisal" is scheduled to take place along the downtown riverfront early next week, and the city is alerting commuters to expect some traffic snarls and noise – including fake gunfire.

The filming for the action movie, which centers around a bank robbery, will include scenes with car chases, a crash, simulated gun fights and a robbery in busy areas of the city, according to a news release from city officials. Cincinnati police will be on site to help detour traffic.

Why this movie producer loves filming in Cincinnati

New York and Los Angeles may be the first cities to come to mind when it comes to filmmaking, but one California producer said the Queen City can more than hold its own.

Randall Emmett, producer of "Reprisal," which stars Bruce Willis and is currently being filmed in Cincinnati, said at a press conference Wednesday that logistically Cincinnati is a great place to produce movies. Emmett said he values the ability to get around the city and film at different locations quickly as compared to larger cities that aren't as convenient.

Apparently pretty visible around The Banks today - I have seen more than a few Facebook photos of the crew and Willis from people who work in the GE building and/or were having lunch around there.  Hopefully it makes it into theaters....
