Hopefully it makes it into theaters....

If it's anything like the last Willis movie to be filmed here, it most likely won't... it was pretty awful. City looked great though.

Apparently pretty visible around The Banks today - I have seen more than a few Facebook photos of the crew and Willis from people who work in the GE building and/or were having lunch around there.  Hopefully it makes it into theaters....

This won't make it to theaters. This producer, director and production company specialize in relatively inexpensive action thrillers that go directly to the DVD and streaming market. This is the 3rd of 4th time they've worked with Bruce Willis. Willis has just given up on his career and any effort to make anything good, so he just takes the paychecks he gets from these movies and phones in his performance. I don't understand why he's let his career get to this point. It wasn't like a Nic Cage situation where Cage had to make every movie offered him to pay back his taxes. I think Willis just got lazier than he already was (he has a reputation for being lazy-he got fired from Woody Allen's last movie because he wouldn't memorize the lines-he was replaced by Steve Carell) and doesn't care anymore. His last good movie was Moonrise Kingdom 4 or 5 years ago.

He has been making some bad movies throughout his career - I mean how did Armageddon make money?  There have been some decent ones like 12 Monkeys, Fifth Element, Sixth Sense, Sin City...but a lot of pretty crappy stuff.  He's making a decent living though.

The trailer for The Killing of a Sacred Deer came out this week. It looks great, IMO. I mentioned up thread that this director's movie "Dogtooth" is one of my favorites - this trailer seems to give this movie the same bizarre, creepy, awkward and uncomfortable with a bit of dark humor vibe:

Here's why Over-the-Rhine is going to resemble a Hollywood film set

Over-the-Rhine will look like Hollywood later this month when Film Cincinnati presents its annual gala.

Actor-director Emilio Estevez and rapper-songwriter Che Smith are among the stars expected to attend “Backlot 30,” Film Cincinnati’s 30 th anniversary gala, Sept. 23 in Over-the-Rhine. Back streets near Findlay Market will be transformed into a Hollywood film set with red carpet entrance, makeup stations, special effects, food and drink.

The script and the acting look "meh", but this is clearly a passion project for Estevez and it looks like everyone was doing it for fun instead of a paycheck or an Oscar. Great shots of Cincinnati, though!

Also the trailer was cut weird. I don't think a movie about a library under siege lends itself to a trailer cut like an action movie.

Gotti is getting poor reviews:

http://wvxu.org/post/first-reviews-murder-gotti

This quote stood out to me:

When filming wrapped in August 2016, Connolly praised Cincinnati for providing locations that looked like New York City. Ehrlich wasn't impressed. He said it was "a cheap-looking film that expends zero energy attempting to capture period detail."

From the previews, it looks like they expected to CGI-out modern-day and "Cincinnati" stuff.  So for example, when they're at the UDF, they might have intended to digitally change the sign.  When they're driving around downtown at night, they might have intended to clone out the modern street lights and give it all a mercury-vapor tint instead of LED.  That stuff costs A TON to do because it is ridiculously labor-intensive.

Cincinnati businesses to star in city’s next major film

film-cincinnati-point-blank*750xx4032-2274-0-639.jpg

When Cincinnati native Johanna Byer learned that the Netflix original film that she’s producing received tax credits to film in her hometown, she and her partners immediately dropped all plans to use another city as a stand-in for Los Angeles in the project they had been developing for several months to focus on the Queen City. Now, Cincinnati’s businesses, landmarks and artwork will take center stage.

“Cincinnati is a city that we’re going to feature in all its glory,” Byer said Tuesday at a press conference announcing that filming for “Point Blank” will begin Monday, Aug. 6.

Among local firms that will be featured are the typical Cincinnati favorites – Skyline Chili and Graeter’s (it’s taking the place of a scene planned for Ben & Jerry’s) – but also some new players including Sheakley Cos., Sibcy Cline Realtors and local breweries that have provided product to be used throughout the film.

Redford's Cincinnati-shot film is now in theaters, and a local company played a big role

Robert Redford's newest movie, shot in and around Cincinnati, is in theaters now, and a local company played a big role in how his character looked.

Romualdo Bespoke Tailoring, located at 7121 Miami Ave. in Madeira, created nine custom pieces for Redford and his stunt double for "The Old Man and the Gun," which hit theaters in October. Flip through the photos for a look at some of the suits and locations where the film was shot in Cincinnati.

It was no mean feat: Romualdo created nine jackets, vest pieces and pants in just less than three weeks. For some perspective, it usually takes six to eight weeks to construct just one jacket.

^ I went to see the movie at the Neon in Dayton, and it was decent. I've never watched a movie where I recognized so many locations, let alone had an intimate familiarity with some of them. I could see my office window in a scene shot a block away. And the Blue Jay diner in Northside is a place I've eaten countless Saturday mornings; the diner is an important location in the film.

^ Blue Jay is also prominently featured in Killing of a Sacred Deer - my favorite of the recent Cincinnati movies. I felt the same way about that movie - I was familiar with pretty much every setting. I'll have to watch The Old Man and the Gun when I get a chance.

Killing of a Sacred Deer was very good. It’s definately not for everyone; the director of the film has a style in many of his films that can be off-putting for some.

MY VIEW: Don't let Ohio Legislature halt Film Cincinnati's momentum

kristen-schlotman*1200xx800-450-0-72.jpg

In the last decade, Cincinnati has enjoyed a renaissance in filmmaking, providing the backdrops for features like "The Ides of March," "Carol," "Miles Ahead," "Goat" and "Gotti."With these pictures came hundreds of jobs and thousands of dollars in new revenue for our area.

A proposal now making the rounds in the Ohio Legislature would eliminate Ohio’s $40 million motion picture tax credit. Without that tax credit, those movies, along with the just-released Emilio Estevez feature "The Public," the Nicole Kidman drama "The Killing of a Sacred Deer," Robert Redford’s "The Old Man and The Gun" and many others, would never have been made here.

Those productions bring millions of dollars into our local economy. In fact, the motion picture industry had an economic impact of nearly $80 million in Greater Cincinnati in 2017 and 2018, according to a study by the University of Cincinnati Economics Center.

Cincinnati gets an unexpected mention in this article:

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/hollywoods-student-loan-debt-problem-are-people-just-struggling-survive-1252338

Quote

Individuals looking to work in creative fields add that, given the 50-plus-hour workweeks that are typical of lower-level positions in the industry and the side gigs that many must take to make ends meet while paying off loans, they feel they don’t have the time or funds to pursue projects that could get them noticed. “You can try to work your way up and make some allies and prove you’re a hard worker, but for a lot of successful creatives, they made their own path, they made something that was noticed and they went from there,” says Thomas Fatora, an Atlanta-based aspiring writer and operations manager at a studio who took out about $135,000 in loans. “That increases the level of difficulty of trying to make a low-budget project.”

To cut costs, several of the young entertainment professionals who spoke for this story choose to work outside of New York and Los Angeles in such cities as Atlanta and Cincinnati because of the lower cost of living. Others have developed side hustles: tutoring, nannying, shooting actor headshots, bartending and driving for Uber and Lyft. Still others have minimized lifestyle costs by selling off their cars and commuting by bike, living with several roommates in one-bedroom apartments in Koreatown or Glendale, or making meals out of the passed plates at awards-season events.

All of these Bruce Willis films have Randall Emmett behind them. He was just credited as a Producer on "The Irishman". While most believe that was a good movie, his others, specifically his Cincinnati shot films, are awful.

"Mauraders" was a $15M film that grossed $1M. "10 Minutes Gone", a MoviePass production, and "Reprisal" barely made $100,000. Can't imagine “Open Source” will be any different.

Speaking of "Mauraders", Netflix's $12M "Point Blank" (2019) was also partially filmed in Dixie Terminal. The only reason they'll ever be spoken in the same breath as "Rain Man".

These Bruce Willis films by Randall Emmett aren't made to make box office money, so listing their grosses does not tell the whole story.  These get a token release in a few theaters, but they are really straight to Redbox and streaming kind of movies.  Along with selling the foreign rights (where Bruce Willis can still pull in viewers)], that's where they make their money.  Bruce gets paid a million bucks to show up for a few days, phone in a performance and walk away so they can put his name on the movie.

Also, "The Irishman" was directed by Martin Scorsese who is one of the best filmmakers of all time which is why is was a good movie.

Cincinnati receives another top accolade for moviemaking

For the third year in a row, Cincinnati has been named as one of the best places in the U.S. for making movies, according to trade publication MovieMaker magazine.

Moviemaker unveiled its annual list of the "Best Places to Live and Work as a Moviemaker 2020" at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Cincinnati came in at No. 14 on the list of 20 best big cities for filmmaking, which was compiled using surveys, editorial research on tax incentives and recent productions.

"The recognition as Ohio’s top film location is a testament to the talented cast and crew members who live and work in Cincinnati and who support the production companies who bring their projects to our area," said Kristen Schlotman, executive director of Film Cincinnati, said in a release.
