Posted February 17, 200619 yr I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this topic, but.... Have any of you seen or read the books "Weird Ohio" and "Ohio Oddities"? I bought both of these books after moving here and reading their good reviews from amazon.com. So far, I'm a little disappointed on them both. Weird Ohio is chocked full of ghost stories throughout various Ohio cities, much of the places abandoned and not open for a tour by any means. It didn't provide any insight into Ohio like I thought it might. Ohio Oddities is slightly better but doesn't map out any real underground tours that I want to take across the state. I'm traveling throughout Ohio with my job....Cleveland next week, then Marietta the following week. I'm looking for a good travel book that I can take along with me for quick stops or interesting facts. If any of you have read a good Ohio book, please let me know what that book is. Or is my only source of reliable facts available on this site? Hmm, maybe....
February 17, 200619 yr I remeber seeing that book on a local news station, I thought it would include stuff about weird Ohio laws or sumthin didnt know it was based on "ghost stories". :roll:
February 17, 200619 yr I know this is kind of lame, and you have probably already considered it, but AAA tourbooks are decent for quick facts about different things. It has the more mainstream touristy stuff, but its a place to start...

Or is my only source of reliable facts available on this site? Hmm, maybe.... Yes, I have a copy of Wierd Ohio (purchased with a Christmas gift card to Barnes & Noble). I haven't read all of the book, I might be 1/2 way through it and I too haven't found myself overly impressed by it either. Odd looking buildings or highway kitsch, sign me up for the tour. Ghost stories-could care less. Almost forgot. A most interesting feature of the Wierd series (Wierd NJ, Wierd USA, Wierd Ohio, Wierd Texas). On the jacket cover of all their books, they use the same early 1970s Ohio roadmap (because it shows US 25, US 30 N/S) in black highlight.

February 17, 200619 yr i enjoy weird ohio and reflect magyar's comments about no need for ghost stories. However if someone knows the editor or something: Get a goddamned index thats functional! (and many other expletives). For example if i want to find all the sights in cleveland, the current index is of no use, i would (and have been) have to look at every page to see if its in cleveland, really fucking annoying. Also, maybe some maps would be nice too.
February 17, 200619 yr Get "Building Ohio" by Jane Ware. That is one of the best guides for urban areas in Ohio. She has a rural edition as well, but I haven't checked that out.

February 18, 200619 yr Moon handbooks has an indepth travel guide for Ohio, though it was published three years ago. Hopefully they'll make an update. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1566914906/sr=8-5/qid=1140247262/ref=sr_1_5/102-9432624-1092122?%5Fencoding=UTF8 Lonely Planet is my fave for guide books and they have a Great Lakes book that covers OH, MI, IL, IN, WI, and MN. That was published before the other guidebook and is out of print. I don't think they're planning on doing another edition. :-(
