"Cincinnati is not a winter-sports city. It doesn't have an NBA or NHL franchise now, nor is it likely to join either league in the future. Pro basketball moved out of town in 1972. Hockey has never seemed interested. A major drawback is population. Metro Cincinnati contains just 2 million people, nowhere near enough to support three major-league teams."

See the Methodology and the XL Spreadsheet too...

Discuss...

Seems like plenty is going on with the Bearcats & Musketeers.  It is also the season for theatre & arts.

Shall I also remind you that the population of Cincinnati-Dayton is larger than that of three-team cities?  Shall I remind you that the square miles of the MSA of Cincy and the MSA of Dayton is less than the total MSA of cities like St. Louis?

See for yourself, don't sell Cincinnati short on numbers.  Sell it short on venue.

Cincinnati has:

* Cincinnati Gardens

* US Bank Arena

* Fifth/Third Arena

* Cintas Center

4 arenas that all have their pluses except for capacity and I personally don't want to see tax payers dollars go toward another publicly financed sports venue to get a third team.

Here are your numbers:

Columbus-Marion-Chillicothe????  Thats an awefully large area.  But I guess compared to others like LA's 34,000 square miles, I guess its not.  Why is Wilmington in Cincy's numbers?  What are these new ways of disecting CSA's????

I don't see Miami listed, thats a metro area of atleast 5 million

I couldn't help but notice that only 3 (not including San Juan) of the cities in that list have geographically smaller CSA's than Cleveland, and they all have vastly smaller pops.  [/thread jack]

This is the stupidest shit I have seen in at least 30 minutes... Especially after looking at their other "extended sports towns" ...

Buffalo, I can understand though...

monte...

not my opinions...I just thought you guys would enjoy seeing this.

I think Cincinnati is just fine and could support an NHL but not an NBA.

Corporate support is strong in this city for athletics...I didn't dig into the study but I think they miss the fact that alot of tix are owned by corporations and are used as perks for clients/employees.

^ Gotcha, my bad ;)

BTW, With NHL in Columbus, Cincinnati will NEVER host hockey.

I don't buy that reasoning at all.  How many Cincinnatians actually support the Blue Jackets?  If they're anything like Clevelanders, they'd say "The What Jackets?  Who the hell are they?"  If the NHL was smart (not claiming that it is or isn't) they would actually try to put teams in adjacent markets to build strong rivalries and consequently team loyalties.

Cleveland & Cincinnati won't get NHL teams in our lifetimes, if they do hunt me down and I will buy you a Great Lakes beer :)

OK, and if they don't get a team in our lifetimes you can hunt me down, and I will buy you a Christian Moerlein! :wink:

Deal.

Why would any city get an NHL team right now???

The whole league is in shambles right now. ESPN(?) did a poll a while back and the poll showed most Americans didn't give a rats ass about the NHL, according to the poll

Personally, I would love to have a NHL team here.

That is why I took the deal.  Odds are looking good for me to receive that beer. ;)

  My bet is that Cleveland wil get a curling team....if not....all of you can buy me a 40 of Laser Malt Liquor!

But I hope you realize that you and X both have to die in order for his conditions to be met. :wink:

Really? ;)  LOL

I think Cincy could support an NBA team.  Judging by NBA's ridiculously high salary caps, they bring in a lot of revenue.  Plus, basketball has gained a lot more popularity since the Royals left.

Interesting list. But like others said, I could see Cincy having the ability to support another team. But they shouldn't undertake that unless the demand is high for a 3rd team (NHL, NBA, MLS, etc.).

  • 2 weeks later...

Those numbers are skewed somehow. It's says Dayton can support an NFL team 100%. NO way this region could support 2 NFL teams.

Cincinnati is not going to build another arena, so you can count the NBA out. The only way is if Butler county builds an arena in monroe next to the Casino's, if it's ever built.

With how high the taxes are in West Chester, I expect that we could build one soon.

You know 10 years ago I would have sang a different tune so maybe age does make someone wiser.  The last thing Cincinnati needs is an NBA team.  The lack of an NBA size arena makes any further discussion a moot point.  Could the city support an NBA team, probably but the city has more important things to focus on.  After just spending almost a billion on two stadiums, the city needs to focus on the residents and making light rail a reality.  After spending 20 years on improving quality of life for the residents, building up a surplus of funds and implimenting rail transportation, there will be a arena out there that is dated and a team looking to move.  So until 2026, I say bah to any further NBA discussions.  ;)

Cincy could support a pro-cornhole league  :-D

^Thats disgusting.

  You DO realize he speaks of the beanbag toss cornhole...not the OTHER one!

Gotcha...We always referred to that game as "bags" if it's the one I'm thinking of.

[flash=200,200]

I still believe that if they built a 25K arena on the River in northern Kentucky, called the team the KENTUCKY Cats, team colors were blue etc, etc... there would be a huge draw from the Cincy metro to all of Kentucky... with Cincys corporate presence and kentuckys rabid basketball fever, I think it's a no brainer... imagine an arena where that goofy tower was suppose to go...

Well considering that I despise the current Kentucky Cats, I highly doubt I would ever embrace any team with Kentucky on it.  Kentucky is only good for one thing, viewing Cincinnati.

but would it work...
