What are the rules for posting in sports threads? Is it just up to moderator discretion when a post goes too far?

I had a post deleted which I thought was just friendly, impersonal ribbing, while a personal attack that could be interpreted as a homophobic slur went ignored. (I let it go without comment because I know the poster is a staunch gay rights supporter, but still...)

My experience with the sports threads is that good-natured ribbing gets out of hand REAL FAST. I recall one occasion where some fun inter-city ribbing blew up into two pages of hateful insults within a single day. I started deleting the posts without locking the thread and, I kid you not, new insulting posts were being made almost as fast as I could delete the old ones.

While I wish we could undertake some inter-city rivalries here, my experience is that too many posters lack the ability to do so in a fun, restrained way. So as long as I moderate the sports sections and the admins give me leave to do so, I will delete all posts I deem as potentially causing threads to get out of hand. So if you want to engage in some sport rivalry/ribbing, try any one of the many sports forums out there.

Maybe you're right, though I think if there were some allowances made for taking shots at teams and keeping it sports-related, as opposed to insulting individuals or cities, it might work okay.

When shall the AFC North thread be revived? :-D

I wish I could trust people to be so disciplined.

Um, like NEVER!

Rivalries are the essence of sports.  Would you say the Cleveland/Cincinnati rivalry since the NFL merger in 1970 has been bad for the state?  What could really be said on an AFC North thread that could really hurt anyone?  If something is inappropriate, someone will report it.

The bad vibes bleed into other threads

If so, that's a sad commentary on UO posters!

Oh well, you are probably right!
