October 4, 201410 yr Very Impressive! It seems like given the choice between Singapore and other cities like Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur in the area for a vacation that Singapore may be a better choice because of it well designed urban areas, interesting architecture, and modern amenities. Thoughts? I imagine the other cities have developed more chaotically with less care to preserve historically significant areas?
October 5, 201410 yr Very Impressive! It seems like given the choice between Singapore and other cities like Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur in the area for a vacation that Singapore may be a better choice because of it well designed urban areas, interesting architecture, and modern amenities. Thoughts? I imagine the other cities have developed more chaotically with less care to preserve historically significant areas? yes, and even more than that, they speak english. well, on the streets they speak singlish, which is close enough, and even fun (although historically of course the brits found it annoying). they speak perfect english in tourist areas. signs and the like are also in english (as well as the local mix of languages). another bonus is that changi airport is best in the world, worth hanging out in on its own if you can believe it, so singapore is a good base and jumping off point if you want to explore more of se asia. we debated going to KL or historic malacca, but i don't really have much interest in malaysia or thailand and we had enough to do. next time i would like to go over to jakarta and explore indonesia and some of the closer resortish islands like pilau bintan and pilau batam. also, maybe new guinea and myanmar someday. as for singapore development, the gov really wants everybody living in those apt tower buildings. they do recognize their historic structures, like the 1800s rowhouse streets, and are trying to keep as much of it as is possible. all of that is gentrified or quickly gentrifying. more than half the island is green, so they definitely care about preserving nature as much as they can. it can be said there is way too much development, but it is definitely not done in a chaotic manner as in other places.
