About 1/4th of the Columbus metro's population growth is through international migration.  Most people know that Columbus has one of the largest Somali populations in the country, but most don't know where else people are coming from.  I looked up migration estimates for the 2004-2008 and 2009-2013 periods to find out.

In the 2004-2008 period, Columbus attracted international immigrants from 131 nations, and 138 nations 2009-2013.  Over both periods, Columbus gained from 148 total nations, so it gained from MANY places.  Obviously, many are not high numbers, but still.

In any case, here were the top 50 nations for each year, and the total estimated migration.

It's for the Columbus metro.  The average annual international migration (at least in recent years) is about 4,900.  So the numbers above are for the period, not by year.

The census does these migration origin numbers.

East Africa is still representing well.

Africa is the #1 origin continent, followed by Asia.  However, Asia is rapidly rising in totals while Africa stagnated or even fell some, mostly due to the decline in Somalia's total.

One other interesting note is just how few Latin nations send significant numbers to Columbus aside from Mexico.  In fact, most Latin nations declined between the two periods.

Well, sort of.  I don't actually recall where I got those numbers and couldn't find the exact same measurement, which is basically where the foreign-born population is moving from. So, I'll do a new comparison, this time using place of birth.  So this would be the full existing population from different countries rather than immigration. You can still measure some obvious immigration due to the population changes, though.  These are for the metro.

Ghana moving from 8th to 5th is obviously due to the Crew signing an insane number of Ghanaian players over the last few years ?

So the metro numbers are interesting, but who actually lives within Columbus itself?  For example, India has become #1 in the metro, but I suspect a large chunk of that population lives in Dublin.  So let's see.

Two things that stuck out for me:

-Big drop in Haitians-probably because of higher numbers right after the early 2010 earthquake-seems like a big decline in new numbers-over half..probably due to recovery after the earthquake-what recover has taken place anyway.

-We are not getting any of the Venezuelan diaspora from that nation's ongoing crisis.

Great that we are getting more Asian and African immigrants-wish we could also get more hispanic/Latin American immigrants(like some of those Venezuelans. For Venezuelans Is it a matter of reaching out or are they just not coming to this area no matter what?

I wouldn't say none from Venezuela.  It went from 255 to 444 2010 vs. 2017, so there's been an increase, but it's not even close to many others.

Ohio doesn't seem to do very well at all with Latino/Hispanic immigration, especially compared to other regional states.  No Ohio city is seeing significant increases.  It's just not on their radar for whatever reason.  European immigration has been in decline for some time, at least from more traditional sources.  Columbus seems to be doing the best with smaller, Eastern European countries than the big ones like France, UK, Germany, etc.

One other thing that struck me- of all the regions, Europe was the only one to have minority representation with the core city.  Oceania too, but they're demographically similar.  Asia, Africa and the Americas are all mostly in the city rather than the suburbs across the metro.

I kinda hate that we are not getting hispanic immigrants. I wish we could get more of them. A certain elected official and his agenda is not helping I am sure. smh.
