November 17, 201410 yr What would you say is Detroit's most successful commercial district? In every photo thread I see of Detroit, I look for an area that appears to be traditionally successful, with active ground floor retail, pedestrians about, etc., and I don't think I've ever seen one. Campus Maritus Park looks nice, and I know a Whole Foods just opened somewhere in the city, but are there any functional NBDs left in the city?

The Detroit suburbs have some amazing commercial districts, but they're pretty much non-existent within the city limits. Midtown would be the exception, especially along Woodward (which is the location of the Whole Foods). There is also some activity along Michigan Ave in Corktown, but the establishments are really spread out among vacant lots and the street is so wide that it doesn't feel like a vibrant commercial district.

Aside from downtown and Woodward in Midtown/New Center, I'd argue the most vibrant commercial district in Detroit city is Vernor Highway, the real Mexicantown. Michigan Avenue in Corktown is cute for two-ish blocks but Vernor is much longer with more activity. The Avenue of Fashion (Livernois Avenue from 7 to 8 Mile) has some activity occasionally but not enough to warrant interest. November 18, 201410 yr Detroit has some of the most amazing architecture in some of the worst conditions. So sad. What I wouldn't give for some of those old skyscrapers here in Cleveland!!!
November 18, 201410 yr Yeah, it's looking better than it used to but not by much lol! ha yeah thats about what i thought from the ssp thread i saw about it -- one more thing, are they trying to build a neighborhood around it too, like the banks or something like that? with apts, restaurants and stuff? maybe i got that wrong.
November 18, 201410 yr No. They are doing their "Banks" at the new Arena District, just north of the Fox Theatre for the new arena. "You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers
