Looks like the elevator core is roughly halfway to its final height? Excited to see the rest of the building catch up.

I suppose the “French Bistro” spray painted on the plywood is good enough confirmation that that’s still going in lol does anyone remember—is it also supposed to be a Chef Dalton restaurant too?

I think it is another chef dalton place. Would love to have a bit of variety in owners but anyone investing in that area is a good thing. 

And it blocks out the Rhodes Tower view from High Street.  What a glorious time to live!

I wish that BEACON sign was activated at night. That would pair really well with the (currently on hold) Merchant Building signage proposal. 

The sidewalk in front of the historic Madison's & White-Haines buildings has started to reopen now that the storefronts are complete. A couple photos of 100 N High as well, including from Pearl on the northeast side.

This building had so much potential to be like Cleveland's city club and instead looks like Rhodes. Nice to see the gap filled in but wish we could get some more uniqueness/color.

I didn't even see your comment while viewing the pictures in the post above and immediately thought this building looks like it might do a better job at actually matching the buildings on each side at their frontage better than City Club.

What does the ground floor retail plans look like for this?

To each their own. I think the city club building is unimaginative and looks like a run of the mill hotel. I don’t think this building will be anything great, but the renderings look better than Rhodes. Like the other user said, it will do a good job of joining the two buildings.

It’s not great, the south part is restaurant space, and the north is just parking garage. The renovation of the Madison building I think will make up for that, a little bit.

I have it from a good source that a long time Short North gallery is moving to the Madison building once completed.  Edwards wants to make this area more artsy and is luring them this way, along with the French Bistro going in and seafood restaurant.

This portion of High St is going to be amazing once the build out is complete. With new tenants such as Speck in The Nicholas building across the street and having residents with new store fronts on both sides of the block, this area of High St is going to be amazing. With "Current" on High attached and Gay St intersecting the south end of this block we can have a beautiful section of downtown active 24 hours a day. All we need is a 24 hr bodega to go with the convenience store all ready in place just south of this block.

Not to mention all the people that will live in the office coverage at the east end of Gay. It’s not right by this, but is easily walkable. 

Plus there's 24/7 classical music blaring from the Atrium Lofts building!

I took a walk around the project this morning. Crews were removing barriers on High St and pedestrians will be able to use the entire sidewalk. There looks to be protective scaffolding along the 15 story portion of the project. The historical restoration looks great, both along High and Pearl.

Great shot! It will definitely be noticeable in the skyline. 

I was down on Gay/High this past Friday Night and it was exciting to see people out and about in this area. I remember going to Blue Jacket games in 2004 and this entire area being deserted after 5PM. 10/10 job done by the developers of Madison, of course I would've preferred the elevator to not be on High St.

I think within the next 10 years it’s going to get even better. More and more units are coming online in downtown which just means more business to keep them entertained. I didn’t know until recently that my in laws considered moving down there about 8 years ago(before grandkids). That to me was shocking and gives me hope for the future vitality of downtown. Also workers going back to the office more and more will help boost it again.

And if they make the smart decision and make Gay pedestrian only, from high to third or so, it will be even a better experience.

Will this project be as tall or even taller than the nearby Residence Inn?  I've always felt their similar height around the corner from each other will compliment the area well.

I could totally see City Club eventually entering the Columbus space.  Even if it's over in Franklinton to add their modern flair to the area.

From 670 it appears to be very close to the same height. It will definitely do a great job of adding density to the skyline.

No idea, but I think the coffee place that was in there only used the skinny building. It is long and goes down Gay st, so I think it would work.

Things could've changed since 2020, but this article (and renderings) indicate it will only take the former Brioso space on the corner, not extending into the Madison's building. However, the space will have a mezzanine level as well as an expansive sidewalk patio

100% agree

 

A higher number of small storefronts offering a variety of businesses is much more desirable for increasing street-level activity downtown vs a single large tenant space. And it also reduces the cost for operators, giving businesses reasonable-sized spaces they can actually afford to rent

Wonder if they’re being considered for the city’s small  biz storefront program? They’d be the perfect spot for that. 

What a remarkable difference driving down High street felt today as that last bit gets filled. This and the Nicholas may not be perfect by any means but to finally have 2 (more or less) uninterrupted blocks of buildings from Long to Broad makes such a big difference compared to just a handful of years ago. 

 

Also, I might have missed, what is going in the southern half of the Nicholas? Everything south of Speck has been boarded up for a few months now and work is happening. It's a substantial retail front.  Could this be the rumored Smith and Wolensky or was there something declared I missed?

Yeah it’s sad we had so many buildings like this that are all gone. Love Edwards for actually coming in and doing this renovation properly. Hopefully whenever the lot at 3rd and Gay gets developed, they try to match the feel of Gay and make it look old.

I'm absolutely no 5 over 1 opponent, but boy would it be way cooler if they at least tried to give them a little architectural flair. It just sucks that modern architectural trends are so restrained due to the insanely high cost of construction these days. You're earthier making something amazing for the wealthy or something bland but functional for the rest.

Agree 100%. I’m not a fan of 5 over 1 but they would be a lot better with some decent design. Gay st is mostly 5 stories and under but it looks amazing because the buildings have some architectural detail.

Partially wrong. It's also construction technologies. The driving cost is labor. If we automate those processes (i.e. modular, and not the backwards thing CR is doing), we could cut costs down significantly, allowing for more flair/detail on facades and higher end finishes in the units.

100%, I know a 5 story building it's as flashy as a skyscraper, but man, I would love this style of development on every street in downtown Columbus. The urban core of a city should be full of businesses, homes, stores, community centers, and other places to gather. Mix-Use is the future and majority of Millennials and Gen Z prefer this style of development. I encourage more development to include older buildings and continue to build up the heart of Columbus. 

 

I'm excited to see this project finish, and potentially see the Atlas Apartment parking lot get redeveloped as well as the lot across next to Elevator Brewing. 

DRA Columbus posted a photo of the windows for the seafood/oyster restaurant (which we think is Hank’s) on its Instagram, and I commented and asked if there was any news on the tenants next door since there was paper and plastic on their windows. The account responded that as of now the entire side will be filled, and “to keep watching across the street also.” They didn’t give any more details, but I am so curious and excited for this area to be bumping! Hopefully this puts a little gas in Crawford Hoying to build on the lot next to the Atlas building.
