This is a pretty big get for Dayton!  From the 2/13/06 Dayton Business Journal:

National SCLC conference coming to Dayton

Officials from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference are scheduled to announce that its 48th annual national convention will be in Dayton this summer.

The Atlanta-based group, which was founded by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has scheduled a press conference for Thursday to unveil the details of the annual convention that routinely attracts at least 7,000 people.

Yay!

Good to hear.  I'm sure it helped that Rev. Raleigh Trammel of Dayton is the national SCLC board chairman...always good to have friends in high places.

Both events are free and open to all.

The Celtic Festival is held on the riverfront, last year drew 50,000 downtown, so is proving to be quite popular here! Multiple stages, vendors, food and drink, etc.

The Celtic Festvial will be on 28th, 29th, & 30th of July.

A few gay happenings in Dayton.  I know there is a gay presence on this site so those of you of the persuasion might be interested (or amused)

First, 22-24 September there is the "Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival", at the neon, sponsored by the Downtown Dayton Priority Board (!), Masque (a disco), and Therapy Cafe.

Their myspace site:

link

(sort of interesting to see some of the "friends" at that site...interesting mix!)

Then, this coming weekend, a "circuit party" (a big gay dance party, I guess..i dont know much about this "circuit party" scene) next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with the main even at the Dayton Convention Center, with imported DJ and female vocalist.

The Flight Party

Dayton Public Schools will be holding an open house before they tear down the old Roosevelt High School.  I am unsure on the date, but I believe it may be November 26.  If I find out for sure, I'll post it here...but so far, I have been unsuccessful on finding out details.  It looks like demolition will start taking place in the spring.

Do you have a picture, this might give me a reason to come, I love old schools.

Oh...what a fascinating building!

My dad went to roosevelt and I wondered if any of the items inside the school will be given away or put up for auction? If anyone knows would you please post, thanks.

I think I may come on Saturday, it would give me an excuse to explore some more Dayton neighborhoods.

I love county fairs! This year I've been mired down in so much stuff I haven't made it to any.

Chelsea Stridsberg named 2007 Clark County Fair Queen

By Natalie Morales

Monday, July 23, 2007

Once the crown was firmly pinned in Chelsea Stridsberg's hair, friends and family rushed to the stage to congratulate her as the 2007 Clark County Fair Queen.

"I was shocked," Stridsberg said. "I never thought it would be me."

The 18-year-old North High School grad strutted the stage in a yellow polka-dot dress Sunday afternoon and confidently answered questions, including what the biggest challenge is that youth face.

By Bridgette Outten

Saturday, July 28, 2007

Friday evening was a sweet ending to Clark County Fair's week of Dish of the Day competitions.

In the fair's only chocolate category, the sole contest of the night, 14-year-old Cally Jones once again edged out her mother, Nina Jones, with a first place mint brownie cake.

It was Cally Jones' third first place ribbon this week.

The First Annual Jazz Festival, Saturday, September 29 in Historic South Park will be held at the gazebo at Wayne and Park Drive boulevard. This FREE event promoting Rehabarama 07 (do we have a page on this yet?) will host six local musicians starting at noon until 9pm. Performing artists will include Razzamatazz & Jazz, the Mario Abney Quintet, the Jazz Central Band, the Archie McPherson Sextet, Rick Evans & The Masters of Jazz, and Deron Bell and The Jazz for You Band. Food and beverages will be available from select vendors. Bring lawn chairs and blankets. In case of bad weather, the event will be held at Emerson Academy on Hickory St.

I'll be a stage hand, of sorts. I look forward to meeting the bands.

Now in its 5th year:

on Myspace

or the website:  Dayton Music Fest , with hyperlink band list. I recognize two Cincy bands that play here, Frontier Folk Nebraska and the very enjoyable Lions Rampant, will be playing the fest.

The mission statement:

About DMF

Dayton Music Fest (DMF) started because we felt that there was a lack of focus on the Dayton Indie Rock scene. We have some great music coming out of our fair city and we thought that we should get the word out to more than just the 18-21 crowd that already knew.

We make no claims of being all inclusive or of being the last word on who you should listen to. What we are trying to do and have always tried to do is open some doors to some clubs that bands like these might not have played before, put the bands in front of crowds that might not have ever seen them before, and have the bands be a part of something bigger than the sum of its parts.

This is truly a labor of love. We want nothing more than to make Dayton a destination for people who want to see the great music this town has to offer. We start working on the fest in January and don't stop until the show is over.

Thank you for supporting the music scene and for supporting DMF

bump

Might get up there to see Buffalo Killers, after missing them this weekend at MPMF.

Yet another bump.

...if yr going to have a rock fest, then have a  rock poster show, too....Postertastic show print show returns:  Postertastic  II

The Dayton City Paper reports these non-Datyon bands playing.  The festival organizers want to bring more out-of-town talent into the event.

Cicny bands:

Buffalo Killers (festival headliner, playing at Gillys, which is the largest venue)

Frontier Folk Nebraska

Lions Rampant

Eat Sugar

Seedy Seeds

Louisville band:

Lucky Pinneapple

Chicago band (originally from Dayton):

Hopstial Garden

A final bump.  Ironically, for all the bumps, I wont be attending, as I have tickets to the philharomic for Beethovens 9th tonight.  More than rock music in Dayton.

Legend, Guided By Voices to play downtown

...Guster and Rusted Root also have signed on for Revival Music Festival.

DAYTON — The first-year Downtown Dayton Revival Music Festival has signed performers including Train, John Legend, Guided by Voices, Guster, Rusted Root, Tony Lucca and Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk for the Sept. 8-9 event.

Matt Luongo, president of Downtown Revival LLC, which is organizing the privately funded street fair, said more than 30 bands will perform on three outdoor stages. There will also be family-friendly events and other activities.

...reading deeper into the article they steve Steve Kellog and the Sixters will be playing.  I might just go for that act...the rest sound like yawners to me (not a fan of Guster, or GBV, for example).  But looks like this guy who is organizing it is one of those locals who went away, saw a good idea elsewhere (in his Birmingham, ALA, of all places), and brought it back home.

This means three music festivals in Sept..the Reggae Festival on Dave Hall Plaza, this one, and the Dayton Music Festival (which is a bar-based festival using a blanket cover charge concept).

"Music" of various types is the one strong suite, the one big stand-out "scene"  in Dayton's local civic culture.

Good to see John Legend come back home.

Love GBV!

When GBV and Afghan Whigs were both cranking out tunes, SWO had more indie cred than anywhere.

GBV is still cranking them out! I do graphics work for GBV and Bob's releases. Bob is GBV!

^ Dude, that's awesome! :D

I love that Bob never left Dayton.

I know he's still writing tunes but I am reminiscing back to the days of Gentlemen and Bee Thousand. A very special time for local music!

This film was made by the same guy who did Helvetica from a few years ago, which is a pretty good documentary treatment on an sort of specialized or obscure subject...using the history of a typeface as an introduction to "visual culture" (AKA "graphic design").

Urbanized

Director Gary Hustwit has an impressive track record when it comes to exploring the world of design. His popular essay films Helvetica and Objectified profiled the makers of graphics and household objects, respectively, by combining smart interviews with stylish cinematography. His latest film completes a design trilogy and hits even closer to home by looking at cities. In Urbanized, we meet architects, politicians, city planners, activists and others who bring fresh approaches to urban living. The film presents invigorating new strategies for meeting the challenges faced by populations that are expanding (like Mumbai) and shrinking (like Detroit)

...and it will be showing at the Neon Movies on Wed, May 9th, at 7 PM.

Maybe an impromptu field trip for local UO folks....

I saw a screening of this a couple months ago. Brilliant film! I highly recommend it to anyone interested in cities and urban planning.

I'd totally go but I'm out of town that Wednesday :(.

Awesome urban nerd film. Saw it when it screened at the Cinematheque. Closest you get to Ohio is the obligatory 5 mins. for the design challenges of Detroit ... That part was actually pretty haunting, I thought. You guys'll love it!

Thanks! I may either go to this or Adams County, haven't decided which. Did Brown County a few years back and it was fun.

Clark County used to get awards for the best county fair in Ohio. People have said it's not so good anymore but I don't really know why. Older?

I demand demolition derby pix if anyone goes! My work schedule has prevented me from going to them for the past 4-5 years. Combine derby and truck pull pix work too!

It's not the demolition derby, but.....

Guide to Indepedenant Coffeehouses in Dayton (tho I think they are missing Central Perc in Oakwood and the Boston Stoker downtown and in Centerville):

No matter how much you love your home and your job, everyone needs a place to go to develop and nurture a sense of community. For many, these “third places” are bars or barbershops or bowling alleys. Thanks to the ‘90s explosions of Starbucks and “Friends,” America has now added coffee houses to their third place options. When it comes to finding our third place, we’re all Goldilocks, looking for a space that’s just right. When a coffee house is vying to be your third place, it must satisfy your need for accessibility and proximate location, present a price stratum that lines up with your resources and create a space that you find comfortable. DCP has developed a guide to help you along your journey to find your own third place.
