Financial challenges cancel Cityfolk Festival

....the headline is a bit misleading since it says they are cancelling more than just the festival, tho they may continue presenting jazz?

Add this to Mountain Days as a local festival that bit the dust.  This used to be fairly well attended back in the 2000s when i was going with my partner.  It was free.  But this year they had to charge admission, I hear.

But note that they are also no longer running a concert series.  The concert series was their main thing before they started with the festival (and outgrowth of the National Folk Festival that was here one or two years back in the 1990s).

I think this is a good indication on how things are weak in Dayton, that there isnt the robust sponsor/donor community to keep things afloat...or people able to pay admissions or ticket prices....

Tipp City - August 16th and 17th

Bluegrass, camping, paddling and other river fun.

From the canoegrass.com website

Canoegrass is a weekend celebration of bluegrass music, the best of the human spirit and river life. The banks of the Great Miami River will come alive with the best entertainers in the region.  This isn’t your ordinary festival. Get ready to get wet, wild and jam all weekend long.  The best seat in the house just may be from a canoe or tube!

I am liking this!

A longtime comedian and Yellow Springs resident is set to perform in Dayton, with ticket sales benefitting a local public radio station.

WYSO is kicking off its spring fund drive by presenting Dave Chappelle's one-time performance June 12 at the Schuster Center. All proceeds will benefit WYSO, which began the process of becoming an independent, community-owned, public station earlier this year. WYSO has been owned and operated by Antioch College since its beginnings over six decades ago.

A limited number of ticket packages including two premium seats were available as "thank you gifts" for a donation of $365. Luke Dennis, WYSO's development director, said the premium seat tickets went quickly and have officially sold out as of April 23. Since the show's announcement, the radio station has received about 700 phone calls in just one day about the show.

Single tickets will go on sale at the Schuster Center's box office via Tickets Center Stage May 10. The tickets will have a price tag of $69.50 and $89.50 for seating in the theater's two-tiered balcony.

https://www.thisweeknews.com/sports/20200512/ohio-girls-basketball-state-tournament-moving-to-dayton

The girls state basketball tournament is headed from Columbus to Dayton beginning next March.  The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) announced Tuesday that it has signed a three-year deal with University of Dayton officials to hold the three-day event at the newly renovated UD Arena.

Ohio State has played host to the girls final four in all but one year (1986 in Akron) since its inception in 1976.  The past 14 have been held at Value City Arena.  However, beginning in 2020, OHSAA is scheduling the girls state basketball tournament for the same weekend as the state wrestling tournament.  Which meant that the girls basketball tournament was bumped from the newer and frequently used Value City Arena to the older and infrequently used St. John Arena.

Because of this scheduling conflict, OHSAA is considering UD Arena as a permanent site for the girls event.  The 2021 event is scheduled for March 11-13.  While the NCAA Tournament First Four men’s games will be held there on March 16-17.

I ain't mad at that.  Spreading out the tournaments to different cities in the state is a good thing.

Springfield's Jazz & Blues Fest grows in second year

Springfield will be alive with jazz and blues music this month, and while “the blues” often is associated with being melancholy, that’s certainly not the case with this event, nor with this city.

New Film Fest Comes to Yellow Springs

Why is Yellow Springs, Ohio the perfect spot for a new indie film festival? Well, it’s a lovely place to visit, nestled conveniently next to Dayton and only about an hour’s drive east on I-70 from Columbus. It’s home to Antioch college, and there are several theatrical venues, all within walking distance of each other.

More importantly, Yellow Springs is where two-time Oscar winner and Ohio’s great filmmaking gem Julia Reichert lived and made films.

Filmmaker and producer Eric Mahoney grew up just outside of Yellow Springs. He returned to the area a few years ago, making a documentary on Dayton’s punk roots, and has been looking for ways to tap into the larger arts community. Along with Ian Jacobs, Mahoney is producing the Yellow Springs Film Festival, running October 6 – 8.

“I think people in the village are now hip to it,” he says. “But I think there’s a lot of people in Columbus that would enjoy the programming and the events.”

Festival programming leans heavily on music. The opening night documentary short Taking Back the Groove, directed by Celia Aniskovich and produced by Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon, depicts disco legend Richie Weeks’ battle to reclaim the rights to his music in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement. Weeks, Aniskovich and Raekwon will on hand for a post-screening Q&A.

The Dayton region has a new film festival. What could it mean for the local economy?

Sonoma, California, has the Sonoma International Film Festival. There's the Telluride Film Festival in Telluride, Colorado. And, of course, Park City, Utah's Sundance Film Festival.

"A lot of small towns have really, really powerful film festivals," said Eric Mahoney.

Could Yellow Springs have the same thing? Mahoney, the founder and programmer of the Yellow Springs Film Festival, thinks so.

"Yellow Springs is a perfect place to host a film festival," Mahoney told the Dayton Business Journal. "It seemed odd that there hasn't been one in the past."

Yellow Springs Film Festival Returns for Year 2

How is it that a tiny village in Southern Ohio has — for two years in a row — drawn some of the finest independent films, comedians, musicians and filmmakers to the Yellow Springs Film Festival?

According to the fest’s programmer Eric Mahoney, being a good dude might help.

The producer/director leans on 15 years of working relationships based in kindness and professionalism to appeal to incredible filmmakers and artists, including Jim Jarmusch and RZA, who will be on hand to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their collaboration (Jarmusch writing/directing, RZA contributing the music), Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai at the fest.
