This isn't my photo but I found it interesting because:

A). I believe you can see The Greene Town Center out in Beavercreek on the horizon line towards the rightside of the photo

B). If I had to guess, this photo was taken from Good Samaritan Hospital.  If so, I need to get up there ASAP!

^That's amazing! A little too amazing, actually..... is it photoshopped?

The Goodyear is a solid half mile from Good Sam, and just capturing one house like that surrounded by trees seems improbable. Also seems like there would be a lot more landmarks with lots of lights in that path, like MVH and its new tower which somehow didn't make it into this picture...

Regardless, neat pic! It makes Dayton look great.

It's only photoshopped with some Shadow/Highlight.  Otherwise, it's a hell of a zoom.  I believe it's from Good Sam because of the position of the little things in the photo.  For example, that Goodyear down on Salem would appear about right in that photo if you check Google map with the zoom (Good Sam on the east side of Salem; that row of lights is Salem; notice the old library where Salem turns, etc).  Also, notice the back of the Masonic Temple on the middle-right side.  MVH would be on the far right of that photo, thus not in it.  The photo is looking southeast towards Indian Ripple/675; MVH would be south of downtown, thus not in the photo. Checking Google maps, that would be accurate from atop Good Sam down to downtown.  Again, hell of a zoom lens.

^Ah, thanks for the explanation! If you can't tell I'm not much of a photography expert haha. Mainly I'm just in awe of y'all's ability.

Anyways, that is an excellent vantage point! A shot that should be representative of Dayton for sure.

I really like how it shows Grafton Hill layered with downtown.  Neat vantage point.

Hi, the photo was taken from Good Samaritan ( I took it) not much photoshop done though as mentioned I did darken some of the distracting non-distinguisable light areas within Grafton Hills, sharpening, etc. Not too long of lens used as I wanted context, about a 300mm. Glad you like it. The key is getting just the right time of day. Nice to meet you all!

Wondeful job!  Love love love it.  I hope you continue to post more wonderful photos of our city.

Your photo is amazing! Agreed with ColDayMan - even though I don't post over here much I still look at the awesome pictures on this site and the one you took blew me away!

Also, sorry about being suspicious earlier - I'm not much of a photography whiz and I don't know how to use Photoshop, so what you don't know you don't trust, right? Dumb aspect of human intuition.

Regardless, this should be a "feature photo" of Dayton. It's an awesome shot and makes the city look very dynamic.

holy mackeral that is just a fantastic view and shot.

OHKID, I take no offense and wouldn't be above using Photoshop to help an image along if needed. Living through the age of film, I simply love having that wonderful tool to use (photoshop). I also will take luck any day. But it is usually the time taken to scout for locations even at different times of day, that contribute to the success of these images. I hope to have more time to browse through this site more in the future to see what other people are up to.

Also, as a side note, I have sold this image several times to clients who do want to represent Dayton as their hometown in their promotions. So, this and other images of mine are helping in their small way to do just that. Happy holidays to all, hope to check in more after the season settles down.

Thanks for including my link with the image ColDayMan, nice to get acknowledged, I do have to watch out for unauthorized usage (particularly commercial application)

Cheers

Oh trust me, I know about that (unauthorized usage)!  It's a wonderful image and you should always deserve credit!

ColDayMan - great shot. Having the light at the top of Kettering Tower certainly helps pull that dark building out of the night sky. I hope to get some snow shots before winter is over.... preferably in a temperature above single digits.  Maybe see you out there!

I'm with ya!

It certainly shows the touch of an experienced professional photographer, showing the magic that is there.

Great shot of downtown at night.

I was born in Good Sam , long before the tower was added.

The light band atop the Kettering Tower in a nice improvement.

ColDayMan gave me an extensive tour of Dayton on Saturday, and although the... weather (Lord almighty Saturday's weather was weird)... ruined the opportunity to get a lot of photos, I still managed to squeeze in a few shots.

“To an Ohio resident - wherever he lives - some other part of his state seems unreal.”

I've always liked that bungalow in the third shot.

Where is the penultimate shot?

^That's the 'yellow spring'!

Great shots! What neighborhood is the bungalow in?

Great shots!  And yes, the weather was just weird.

very good work - love the skyline pic

Great shots! What neighborhood is the bungalow in?

It's in St. Anne's Hill, I believe. Ohio needs more Arts and Crafts homes.

A fairly uncommon angle on the downtown skyline:

Yeah, the view looking down west Second is definitely a unique one.

Speaking of Arts & Crafts homes, there's a fantastic little A&C bungalow on the corner of Waldo and Manette, at the Wayne Avenue back entrance to Woodland Cemetery that's going to waste/rot, but still standing; I think I'd have to try to save it if I still lived in town.  A perfect porch.  And one small architectural gem that was lost was the little "Italian"cement staircase with ornate wrought-iron railings going up the side of the white house that used to stand next to Esther Price Candies on Wayne, just a block northeast of this bungalow.  You can still see it on the Google Street View if you switch back to the June 2011 street shot; it's all gone by the November 2015 picture.  I've drive by that a million times and never noticed it there.  I would have liked to have bought the whole thing and reassembled it elsewhere; too perfect to just scrape into the landfill...

Who would wanna explore downtown Dayton with me sometime ?

  • 3 months later...

It was nice out this morning, so I took a quick ride through Dayton View to get a couple of shots of one of my favorite houses in Ohio... if anyone knows more about the history of this place, please share it!

Sure, I grew up in that neighborhood so I guess it's fitting to talk about that house.  It's the Traxler Mansion, which was built in 1922 for Louis Traxler a large department store owner in Dayton back in the day.  Traxler's Department Store is below:

The site of the store is located where McCrory’s is/was now.

So sad! I grew in Trotwood and it is tragedy to see what has become of it. :-(

  • 1 year later...

Is it me, or are the gooseneck lights on that historic building too large?? Is this a recent renovation?

Yes, it's a recent renovation into a coffee shop.
