The Crew's season may have been put on hiatus today, but stadium construction appears to be continuing without losing any steam.

Crew stadium still on schedule as construction presses on amid coronavirus pandemic

Columbus’ soccer fans may not have to worry about the coronavirus pandemic disrupting the mid-2021 opening of Columbus Crew SC’s new Arena District stadium.

Construction is still ongoing on the stadium in the midst of Gov. Mike DeWine’s stay-at-home order, Crew spokesman Tim Miller said Tuesday.  “The Crew’s downtown stadium construction team … continues to work onsite while their group takes the proper precautions to follow protocol and ensure the safety of the workforce and continues to monitor the situation daily,” Miller said in an email.

I know in some of the original planning renderings they had some open area on the north end of this project that was I believe for future development. Does anyone know if the 440 housing units and commerical/office space is just within that area shown to be developed, and could there still be further development in that northern area? Thanks and thanks for the update.

* I was just wondering if they could get closer to the original much higher density for Confluence Village.

Pizzuti Partners on Mixed-Use Development at New Crew Stadium Site

A joint venture between Haslam Sports Group, The Edwards Family, and The Pizzuti Companies was announced today to lead the mixed-use development portion of the Confluence Village project, which will surround the new Downtown Crew Stadium currently under construction.

“We are thrilled to partner with one of the leading Central Ohio development firms that brings the wealth of experience that Pizzuti possesses,” stated Josh Glessing, VP of Strategy for Haslam Sports Group. “They have a long history of developing projects in Columbus and share our vision to complement the Arena District in a way that will spur further investment and advance the City’s Workforce Housing priorities”

The Crew have created social media accounts for the new stadium and our now unveiling new renderings of the stadium. They look amazing.

Here's the twitter account: https://twitter.com/CrewStadium

And here's some of the new renderings.

Interesting.  It looks like the design has evolved a bit.  It looks they've opened the corners more by peeling back the roof somewhat and by adding new public plazas at the SW and NW corners.

Probably the biggest change is a new elevated plaza and large staircase for the general public at the SW corner plus a new ground level plaza for the Nordecke supporters section at the NW corner.  Can't tell if they altered the plaza at the SE corner that previously featured a concert stage.  I hope they didn't because that was one of the best aspects of the previous design.

The previous design and these new renderings are both really great.  If anything, if looks like they are rethinking the previous design to add more public gathering space outside the stadium concourse but also off the surrounding sidewalks.

This looks awesome...The roof design is a fantastic element!! I must admit, i am a casual soccer fan and i have only been to a few Crew games at MAPFRE stadium, but this is going to change that 100%.  I think this is going to do so much for the Crew.  I will easily take in 5-10 matches a year now.  This is what the Crew has needed for a long time...an olive branch to the casual fans (love them or hate them). I really appreciate what they have carved out for the NORDEKE too!  Listen, they deserve their own diehard pregame area.  They literally kept the franchise alive!!  Attendance is going to sky rocket.  I just love what the Arena District has become and will continue to become.  Now, if we can get something brewing and designed for the dirt triangle to put an exclamation point on the AD....that would be amazing!!!

Also....are those Crew shuttle busses i see?  That would be a great idea!!

Wouldnt think they would've included a noticeable detail like that if it wasnt something their planning on or at least hoping to do. Probably makes sense too. Especially for some older fans, disabled fans, or families with small children for whom walking even a few blocks may be an ordeal.

Whether there are team-specific shuttle buses from the AD parking garages, or they simply reroute the CBus to go around the new stadium, I'm fairly confident there will be some form of transportation from the parking garages to the stadium. The new ownership have done a great job with pretty much everything since taking over, so I highly doubt they will ignore the need for some form of shuttle service.

The team posted a pretty cool video which provides an update on construction progress as well as what to expect in the future: https://www.columbuscrewsc.com/post/2020/05/18/downtown-crew-sc-behind-scenes-look-next-major-construction-phase?autoplay=true

The team also has a new live webcam feed of the stadium construction site which provides some new views and features: https://public.earthcam.net/tJ90CoLmq7TzrY396Yd88LfYWPyQxkt0K3IoDnSqPq4!/the_crews_new_downtown_stadium/camera/live

As you can see, the seating bowl on the south end is starting to take shape and steel is starting to rise in the southeast corner. According to the video, steel will start rising rapidly and you will see the stadium quickly taking shape.

They have also added a 360 Drone Cam to the new stadium's website, and it's pretty awesome. It's not a live feed like the construction cam, but you can pan around and zoom in/out, and it's a very good picture quality. I'm guessing they will be updating the picture periodically throughout the process, though I'm not sure how often.

That pit is really huge and pretty deep too. Love to see the progress. It gives hope for the future and reminds me that we will get through this current mess and will be able to enjoy things again like our soccer team and new stadium!

Crew Gets Last of Approvals for Stadium

With the steel frame of the upper bowl now clearly visible at the end of Nationwide Boulevard, representatives of the Columbus Crew SC went before the Downtown Commission this morning with a final round of approvals for their new stadium.

Steve Lyons, the team’s Chief Business Officer, told the commission during today’s virtual meeting that work on the project is continuing at a fast pace. “We’re proud that we’re on time for our July 2021 opening date next season,” he said, “and we’re also proud that we’ve been able to ensure the health and safety of all of our workers throughout the entirety of this process.”

The commission approved a signage and way-finding plan for the stadium and surrounding area, while also giving the green light to a video board that will sit at the north end of a large plaza planned for the southeast corner of the stadium site.

They are really hitting the mark with this stadium.

Any rumblings of naming rights/sponsorship of the stadium yet?

I'm not sure how they expect this to be completed by July of next year.  FCC's stadium broke ground 10 months earlier but this stadium is going to open only 4 months after FCCs?  Consider me skeptical.  Whenever it does open I'm really looking forward to coming up for a game.  I always loved going to games at Mapfree but this new stadium will be a huge upgrade, especially location wise.

According to my ticket rep last Friday, they are actually slightly ahead of schedule. The weather has been very good for construction since they got things underway.

No idea but I'm curious about them not having any other placeholder sponsor names in the artist rendering... but Honda is clearly visible on the wall/screen by the stage.

Just kidding. But seriously, wouldnt be the most surprising thing if they decided to upgrade from shirt sponsors to stadium naming rights.

You also gotta keep in mind the Confluence site was basically a blank slate ready to dig, versus Cincinnati had to abandon ROWs and demolish buildings, etc. Plus the location is more restricted for construction, materials retrieval, etc.

They weren't lying.  Here's the new Nordecke renderings:

What seems to be neglected here is any sort of trail connection to... anywhere. Obviously this is a design for a particular parcel, but the addition of this pedestrian bridge does not accomplish much of anything. For anyone riding down the Olentangy, they continue to have to make a at-grade crossing across Spring/Long, a crossing that does not [legally] exist until you get to Neil Ave, or back across the river where you have to cross Spring/Long to get to the Boat House parcel where the existing pedestrian bridge connects to the north Scioto path. I hope that this is an immediate next phase of this. Otherwise the new pedestrian bridge is accomplishing almost nothing.

I mean, even if they did absolutely nothing else, this seems to accomplish at least a few things to me.  This gives a much easier path to walk from Grandview Yard to the stadium by jumping on the trail at Goodale and then walking to this bridge.  This will also give access to the White Castle area and the new Grandview Yard stuff coming to the south of Goodale.  I think this could actually also give a better walking path than Neil to people in Harrison West.  It gives much easier access from CoverMyMeds new HQ and any new development over in Franklinton because you can jump on the path at Souder and just walk a bit to the bridge, regardless of the crappy at grade crossing at Spring/Long.  Finally, and probably the main reason for it, is to give the new residents in Confluence Village access to the path.  That being said, they already have plans to extend the path on the Arena District side of the river underneath Spring Long and connect to the riverfront downtown.

Certainly creates an ease of access to the stadium site when thinking in terms of Franklinton and Grandview. Otherwise, franklinton residents would have to go across broad, rich or main to then take the path to north bank to cross Spring/Long. Grandview would need to cross the river at third and take the path through harrison west and then into arena district by riding down goodale (not too pedestrian or cyclist friendly).

The under the bridge route would be a very nice addition - however, without it, I still recognize accomplishments in ease of site access.

Side note: The next pedestrian bridge needed is from veterans memorial center to north bank park. Something eye-catching and well-lit. We will want people to easily get from the arena district to the scioto peninsula development since there will be restaurants, bars, shopping and parking.

There is currently no *official* access from the White Castle site down to the new stadium site. There are a great many railway tracks where 670 becomes a bridge/connects to 315. That's another trail extension that needs to be worked out, in addition to roadway access between White Castle and the stadium site.

Have you seen actual plans for the trail extension underneath Spring/Long? I hope that this little park becomes an spur for extensions north to Goodale and south to connect with the Scioto Greenway

With such a nice area being developed I wish they would reconsider the density of the residential part of this and go higher and have more units. They can go five floors(six if the first is concrete and say used for parking, retail, commercial, etc.)and up to 75 feet with it being stickbuilt before the big jump in expenses comes. I don't want them to "underdo" this.

Are you aware of the Olentangy Trail ramp at Goodale?  https://www.columbusunderground.com/goodale-bike-ramp-set-to-open-soon-bw1

I'm asking because, if you are, I'm confused by this comment: "I hope that this little park becomes an spur for extensions north to Goodale."  The new pedestrian bridge accomplishes exactly this by connecting Nationwide Blvd on the east side of the river to the trail on the west.  Now, by simply crossing this new bridge, anyone on Nationwide will easily be able to walk a bit north and then up that ramp to Goodale and be directly in front of the apartments at Reach.

I’m wondering if they are keeping them shorter in order to not hide the stadium from the highway. If I was spending $350 million on a stadium, I wouldn’t want to hide it.

Would love to see them go taller with at least one or two buildings, but I doubt it.

@TH3BUDDHA Yes, but I mean they could add a trail to the east side of the river. There is already one worn in from people trying to do this. It's ridiculous to think that people would have to cross the river twice and cross Goodale to connect to these two all but adjacent parcels along that same river. I know that it's technically redundant, but people are going to try and make that connection themselves (as they already have, given the "desire lines") and will have no official crossing (with any sort of safety precautions) of the RR tracks that divide these two areas.  In my eyes, it's like asking a person to walk a number of blocks in the wrong direction just to cross the road to get to a perpendicular destination (which is all but a disease in American planning). We need to make necessary and convenient access for people, not expect them to know that they have to cross the river east/west twice to get immediately north or south.

I mean, I don't disagree that the connections in the area are bad.  We did that when we decided to have two highways intersect at one of our cooler natural features.  That being said, given what we are currently working with, I was simply disagreeing that the bridge accomplishes "almost nothing."  I think it does slightly improve the mess over there for now.  I agree that there needs to be more work in the future and I think we will see that come to fruition as it builds up.

I think they could go taller/denser in-between some lower, especially on the North and West-it is going to be open to the east(the most important view being between the stadium and downtown IMO)and they should keep the southern sections lower(if they develop that)so I think it could be done. I mean they had proposed over 800 units originally. I am more concerned about the number of units and density than the height, but it could have both-more units and a few taller parts as well. I would not want it to be surrounded(including on the triangle to the east)by a monotonous 75 foot high wall of buildings.

Ideally they could incorporate a tower like the Northbank Condo Tower but I know that is not going to happen.

I wonder what they will ever do with that triangle to the east of this site-that parcel of land is so problematic with the limited access and railroads almost completely surrounding it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*edit* nevermind... I completely forgot that the 440 housing units is only referring to the five five-story residential buildings to the west/northwest of the stadium north of Nationwide Blvd. Those buildings seem like they will be large enough to account for all of those units. That leaves a big area north of the stadium open and everything south of the Stadium.  Duh! on my part.

Exactly, the couple of parcels between Nationwide and Spring have HUGE potential for some really substantial developments, a la Park's Edge.

And, not to step off of my prior soapbox, hopefully a proper intersection (with a TRAFFIC LIGHT! and CROSSWALKS!) at Hocking Street is in the works, or (even better) a new R.O.W. that cuts between the existing parcels and terminates at the new stadium (the views! The terminating axis!). It would solve so many problems that this whole Confluence Village is going to have before they even arise.

Just speculating, but that area north of the stadium and south of the freeway would be an excellent space for a highrise on top of a parking deck. With a ground floor and say six/seven or so levels of parking that would bring the top of the parking deck even to or even a bit above roof of the stadium, providing the open south top of the garage as a perfect outdoor spot with great southern views, a pool deck, bar, etc. while the northern section would be high enough above the freeway that it would not be so problematic noise-wise. Also there would be some nice northern views up to the OSU skyline as well,. Just sayin' and all.

They could even use go the Millennial Tower route and have the back and sides of the parking deck as advertising space(also like what was proposed for Harmony Tower). It would be very visible from the freeway and areas to the north. Just sayin' and all...

I would rather the area south of the stadium then be lower-but have the line of Park condos extend at least west to the railroad tracks-that way the views of the downtown skyline would still be open from the stadium and all.

Design for New Downtown Riverfront Park Approved

A new three-acre riverfront park got a final stamp of approval from the Downtown Commission this morning.

The park is designed to complement a bike and pedestrian bridge – already approved by the commission – which will connect the Olentangy Trail to the western terminus of Nationwide Boulevard, where a new soccer stadium is currently under construction.

The new greenspace will also serve as an amenity for Confluence Village, a mixed-use development that is planned for the land that sits between the river and the stadium.

Brad Westall, Greenways Planner for the City of Columbus, presented the latest iteration of the plan for the park to the board at its July 28 virtual meeting.

The city is installing traffic signals at Hocking and at Hanover. Based on the plans I've seen:

- At Hocking, they are basically just signalizing the current configuration, except widening into the median to provide two left turn lanes from Long to Hocking. There will not be a new crosswalk across Spring and Long.

- At Hanover, there will be full crosswalks. Drivers from Hanover will be able to turn left onto Long St but drivers from Long St will not be able to turn left onto Hanover (basically the opposite of the current make-shift setup).

I don’t remember seeing this view of the stadium with the buildings. Kind of gives a great look at how it will all look together.

I suspect the north side of the stadium facing 670 wont have very high building(s). Theyll want the stadium very visible to the highway, especially when it comes to the stadium naming rights being slapped on the building.
