I'd love if we got a MAC football game in there, maybe OU plays a game per season in Cbus?  I think it would be cool; BG and Buffalo played at Crew Stadium in 2012.  I think OU would resonate better with the local crowd on an OSU bye week.

Columbus Crew SC releases new renderings that show fan experience at new stadium

Columbus Crew SC officials released new renderings of the team's future home on Tuesday, showing off what they say will be a superior fan experience at the new Arena District stadium.

The renderings of the new stadium, slated to be finished in July, show a variety of places for fans to gather, including the Nordecke fan section, a beer garden, open terraces, premium seating and seats that are designed to feel as close to the pitch as possible.

A 360-degree concourse will surround the pitch, leading to open hangout areas, patios, balconies, and concessions. The goal is for fans to have "a visual connection to the pitch" most places throughout the stadium, said Matt Schuepbach, senior project designer at HNTB, the Crew stadium's architect, during Tuesday's virtual town hall.

"Everything is going to be amplified" from the experience at Mapfre Stadium, Schuepbach said.

Here's a bunch more construction pictures from various accounts on Twitter as a result of a stadium tour given to supporter's groups today.

And finally, here is a view from the middle of the field. You can get a feel for how enclosed it will feel for the players, and how close to the action all of the fans will be:

Construction has now progressed to the point where the stadium is clearly visible in satellite images:

Nothing particularly spectacular, but I thought it was neat to see the scale of the project in context with the surrounding area.

I can't wait to see it built after all the city went through to keep the team. I am also eagerly awaiting the construction of the surrounding Confluence Village-and hoping they might up the # of units and have some really nice designs and quality materials to make the area really stand out and "pop" in it's relative isolation. I also hope this is a catalyst for construction to fill in the gap between this and the original Arena District-the area which I guess is now called "Arena West"/Pen West" or whatever. Maybe we will get really lucky and get another tower like TCANB as a sort of exclamation point for this end of the Arena stretch.

Hard Hat Tour: New Crew Stadium

Representatives of Columbus Crew SC showed off the progress being made at their new Downtown stadium during a hard hat tour this morning.

Work has continued at a steady pace since a groundbreaking ceremony officially marked the beginning of the project last October, and team officials say that the building is on track to be completed in time for the first Major League Soccer game to be held there in July of next year.

Josh Glessing, VP of Strategy for Haslam Sports Group, led the tour, explaining that the current view of the building that an observer gets from West Nationwide Boulevard doesn’t quite do it justice.

Apart from the exposed cinder blocks and concrete that will eventually be covered with a more finished-looking product, the scale of the stadium does not really come through, he said, since half of it is built below-grade.

Hate to be that guy thats being nit picky about something Im really happy about but I really hope they do some kind of lighting feature on the stadiums roof. The black is just kind of meh. I honestly really like how Cincinnati FC did theirs it reminds me of the Barclays in Brooklyn. Looks so good at night especially.

If you know anything about stadiums, comparing one rendering to another rendering is pretty meaningless. Let’s wait and see how the final product turns out for each stadium.

I personally like the design for each stadium and I really like that they are distinct from one another.

I honestly like the stadium design just the way it is for the most part. The black angular look is unique where as FCCs stadium looks like the trendy stadiums that look like neon space ships of the past decade or two. Our stadium looks like a stealth bomber.

As far as the facade goes, I think it could be cool if there was a way to just illuminate the black mesh looking material from behind and to make it look like its sparkling but nothing too ostentatious...very subtle. Id love to see some really dynamic lighting and effects inside the stadium especially for pregame and goal celebration moments. I think it would add to the atmosphere and hype of the occasion and make an impact on new fans and people yet to become interested in the Crew, if the game experience feels like a big freakin deal. I'm also more interested in lighting up some of the surrounding features of the stadium than the facade of the stadium itself. Id like to see the smokestack illuminated, at least on game days. I think it would be cool if there was like a rotating beacon light or something. Some yellow lighting on the pedestrian bridge to the Olentangy Trail could be a nice simple touch. I also think theres an opportunity to do something really cool with the railroad underpass along Nationwide Blvd approaching the stadium. Could be a cool place for Crew related art/murals and some yellow illumination as well!

Just my ideas!

I really hope they light up that smokestack year round. Given how dark it is here in winter, I’d think they’d want to.

No, I have thought this too. Early on they teased that it may include dynamic lighting buy that seems to have been edited out as the design evolved. Based on the signage package there will be a name/logo placed on the roof once complete, so that might be why. I am still holding out that we may score some nice peek through lighting within the facade though that could create a really wonderful shimmer effect.

As for the FCC stadium, while I love the front crown, it is really weird to ma that its only on the front of the stadium facing Central Pkwy, the back is receiving no lighting even though it will still be exposed and visible from Ezzard Charles, I-75, and Liberty. Strange choice.

I think where the new Crew Stadium succeeds though is with its ground level interaction. Cincy is going for the fully at grade stadium again (much like US Bank Arena) while the Crew are dropping the field. I think it has an insane impact on how the stadium feels and interacts with the city and I think FCC really flopped on this one. Either way I am really excited for two top of the class SSS in Ohio and the rivalry created with these teams.

Totally agree on this point. One of the best aspects of Huntington Park is the fact that the field is sunk allow the stadium to mesh extremely well with the surrounding streets.

I'm so excited for this stadium and I don't think I've ever even watched a full soccer game. Maybe I can become a fan. I wonder how many others out there are like me?

34 minutes ago, Zyrokai said:

I'm sure there will be many other people who will attend games every once in a while that would never have thought of attending a game at Mapfre. I think it will be very similar to the Clippers move to Huntington Park. I would say at least 30% of the crowd at Huntington Park for any given game would have never considered going to a game at the Coop simply because of the location.

It's going to be an impressive stadium for sure. I got to go on a tour inside the stadium this past weekend -

If I remember correctly, the reason why FC Cincinnati didn’t wrap the “back” or west side of the stadium with what they are calling “ Fins” is because there is a lot of residential directly across the street so they wanted to keep it low key and didn’t want the extreme lighting effects to shine into peoples homes. But I agree with what was said above, these will be 2 great stadiums and I appreciate the fact they are going to look and feel very different. I do like that FC Cincinnati’s stadium is going to have a TON of premium seating and space more than any other soccer stadium in the country by far. Its also going to be the biggest soccer stadium at 26 Thousand until Nashville’s 30 Thousand seat stadium is built.

BMO Stadium in Toronto seats 30k and is expandable to 40k. LA Galaxy's stadium seats 27k and can accommodate 30k+ with SRO. Orlando, Portland, and NYRB all have stadiums that are between 25k and 26k. So, the stadium will definitely be on the larger side, but it won't be the largest.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta (42.5k for soccer, expandable to 71k) and CenturyLink Field in Seattle (37k for soccer, expandable to 68k) were both built specifically to house soccer teams, although I wouldn't put them in the same class as the "soccer specific stadiums".

I don't really have any issue with 20k. It's pretty much the mid-point in terms of soccer specific stadiums for MLS. Given the open corners and the standing room only terraces above the nordecke, I wouldn't be surprised if the SRO capacity is 22k+.

- BMO is semi soccer specific it was modified to host a CFL team

- Red Bull Stadium capacity is 25k

- Orlando is 25,500

- Portland 25,218

- Banc of California Stadium 22,000

- ATL and Seattle are NFL stadiums (I don’t care how soccer compatible they are designed lol)

As I said at 26,000 seats FCC will have the largest American Soccer stadium until Nashville finishes theirs.

True!!! Lol I did miss LA galaxies “Dignity Health Sports Park” at 27K. When I think LA I always think the new Banc Of Cali Stadium

BMO is very much a soccer specific stadium. It was built specifically for soccer. It didn't house a CFL team until 10 years after it was built, and the CFL team draws crowds that are only about 50% the size of Toronto FC's crowds.

Yes. NYRB, Orlando, and Portland all have stadiums between 25k and 26k, essentially the same as what FCC's stadium is supposed to hold, plus or minus a few hundred.

Yes, BoC Stadium is 22k. I wasn't talking about BoC Stadium though, I was talking about whatever LAG's stadium is called now. It seats 27k and is often expanded to 30k+.

Yes, which is why I said I wouldn't classify ATL or SEA as soccer specific stadiums.

So yes, FCC's stadium will be on the upper end of seating capacities in MLS. No, FCC's stadium won't be the largest capacity in MLS or in America once it is finished.

When I was researching initially BMO didn’t come up because it’s in Canada and I said American. But I completely forgot about LA Galaxy not being at Banc of Cali stadium. Also Miami will match Cincy at 26k once completed. Miami’s stadium looks insane (in a good way). I can’t wait to see a few of these places in person.

Agreed! MLS teams really seem to be upping their game in terms of the stadiums they are building. Crew Stadium and FCC's stadium both look like they will be amazing. BoC Stadium looks really cool. Minnesota's stadium looks awesome. Unfortunately, DC kinda dropped the ball on their's, but it's still much better than RFK!

I will never have anything nice to say about Austin lol, so yea it looks like crap.

Ugh, Austin's location is terrible as well. It's up by the Dominion, I think it's called (Edit: It's called the Domain)? It's basically their Easton. Imagine having this stadium at Easton.

Edited by Zyrokai

Totally agree @Zyrokai their stadium location sucks. It's funny because Precourt claimed he couldn't make the team work here in Columbus because Columbus wouldn't give him a stadium in the "urban core", which is obviously false. Columbus actually ended up with a stadium in the "urban core" while Austin ended up with a stadium in a vacant lot behind a Tire Discounters down the street from a faux-urban shopping center.

Do not use that name! He is "the man who shall not be named" on this site! lol.

Actually I don't really blame Austin(although it is fun to hate a bit on them anyway). I blame "the man who shall not be named" and I am glad he is out of here and they have to deal with him.  All of this is coming about for us despite his attempts.

I also hope we have some kind of lighting scheme. The chimney will be nice as planned.

It's been just over one year since the ceremonial groundbreaking was held for the new Crew Stadium on Oct. 10, 2019.  In this article, team officials say that the project remains on track to open in July 2021.

Since the first steel beam was placed in May, 86% of the steel has now been installed.  While work is still in the early stage on the north end (which was modified with additional Nordecke amenities), precast concrete has been set for the lower east, south and west bowls.

The overall stadium budget has risen from $300 million to $313.9 as some features were added to the original design.  The team said the additional $13.9 million being spent on the stadium was for a new plaza at the northwest Nordecke entrance, a video board at the plaza and additional finishes and social spaces throughout the stadium.

Now that most of the steel has been placed, you can get a better idea of the stadiums size and impact from a distance (I'm sure it will however give a different impression once the stealth fighter-esque exterior is completed). It seems a little lower than I anticipated, so I'm very glad the branding on the smokestack will be permanent. Views from the Scioto Greenway

I notice this as well.  It really doesn't have a huge presence from 670.

I know they say capacity is 20,000, but this stadium just looks more like 15,000.  Maybe it's because like you said, it's built partially underground and doesn't make an impact on the skyline.  Not saying i don't like the stadium, in fact i think it looks really cool, just a little small.

I'm not gonna lie, those entrances at the south corners are going to be epic. Definitely a unique design.

Yea, the crew were on national TV on Sunday and they gave a pretty nice shout out to the new stadium and this 3D seat viewer.
