I watched the match via ESPN. Lots of great coverage of the significance of the openning of the stadium. The best part is that main camera from the press box, when panned right, shows the skyline through the southeast opening. Truly a beautiful, well thought out facility.

I noticed that on the broadcast too. It was awesome. It was like a picture frame of the skyline.

Stadium was great. Definitely unfinished as mentioned above but well enough to host the first game. I’m a STH so I look forward to seeing how the punch list work evolves further as the season progresses. Tough draw - electric atmosphere at the game and throughout the city. If we can get the fair weather fan to attend a game, they may get hooked. Go crew!

Here's a few pics I grabbed from Twitter of the (mostly) finished product.

I knew It was going to be a great atmosphere but that looks better than I ever imagined inside and outside the stadium from the pictures posted.  I zoomed in on Astor Park wondering what was going on there and was impressed even more (from what one can learn from a poster on a fence).  Looks like a big win for Columbus and this neighborhood.

Clearing out some tweets I saved from opening day.

I liked OSU's tweet acknowledging the Crew's first home field was Ohio Stadium from 1996-98:

And I liked the other pro team at the other end of Nationwide Boulevard welcoming the Crew to the neighborhood:

We've all come a long way from Columbus being awarded one of the first 10 MLS teams back in 1994(!)

Final tweets I saved from last Saturday:

Skinny fans!

I've never uploaded videos before, so I hope this works, you may have to click on the video to get them to start and maybe make them full screen??  Also these are in no particular order.....

My experience is one I'll never forget!!  I started my day out in the Short North hitting up a few galleries for Gallery Hop with some friends.  We were in and out of a few bars and everyone around was in Crew gear.  It was amazing to watch the march start with maybe 200 people and continue to build up as they marched on.  We cashed out our tab and joined the march and by the time we go to the Arena district it had grown easily to 1000, and as we turned the corner of NW Arena onto NW Blvd, it was a sea of people, easily 5,000+ just building momentum and chanting/cheering!!!  It was such an amazing build up and grand march up to the new stadium!!!

I was lucky enough to be in the River Club Level seats and accommodations.  The Barrio Taco place computers went down after the half, but that meant free tacos and beers haha!!!  Walking the stadium the finishes are awesome, however as other people have noted there are a few things to be completed yet, but I'm sure within the next 2 weeks most of that will be done.

What I couldn't believe, was the noise factor!!  Some have criticized our stadium for not being "tall", but I'm so glad they kept the huge roof "lower" (see what I did there) because all this has done design wise is capture the sheer volume of the best fans!!!  When I look at Austin's new stadium, with their soaring scaffolding style roof, the gap between the seating and the ceiling allows so much energy and noise to be lost.  I've been to a lot of OSU games, and the noise of a 20,400 crowd here, rivals anything I've heard at a 104,000 crowd.  When we returned to our friends house over in Victorian Village, the neighbors were telling us how they could hear the crowd all the way from there!!  The designers of this stadium should be commended and the atmosphere they have created is incredible.  It's not about being the largest, but being the best!!!

There is so much more I could say, but wow, what a day!!  More parking will come as Astor Village is build out, however nobody seemed to mind the walk up, if anything it added to the momentum and comradery of our fans!!  Also, you can valet your bike!!!  We ended up checking out the new Lumen Skybar at the AC Hotel afterwards, so I threw in a few pictures of the Hilton 2.0 site.

What a game!!!  I'll admit NYC played strong and honestly controlled and dominated the ball way better than us last night, but we held strong and pulled out our first win in our new stadium!!!  The energy was again so amazing!!  I really love that they are doing the fireworks for the national anthem as well as the start of the roster/game!!  I've been going with my friend who bought season tickets  in the River Club level, and I must say, I'm getting hooked and planning to purchase season tickets now next season!!!  Great job Crew!!!

Can I be friends with your friend too? Lol

Out of curiosity, how often did you attend Crew games at the old stadium? I’ve seen a lot of people saying they never really went before but now they are hooked.

I will note that last night was about 1k short of a sellout. While that is disappointing, it’s important to keep in mind that the cheapest tickets available last night would have been among the most expensive in the old stadium.

As a diehard Cleveland Browns fan. I bleed orange and brown. But I’m 100% 614. I can’t wait to go to game in this new stadium

I attended a Crew game at the old stadium back in like 2000 when I was in high school with a few friends, but that is it.  I'm totally one of those fans and now even stronger fan that is "victim" to enjoying sports for the experience factor, and this new location and stadium provides that completely!!  I can't tell you how many of my friends who never attended before and just followed from a distance are now going to the games and have become season ticket holders.  This stadium is a game changer and has breathed even more life into an already strong and successful team and fan base!!!

I don't expect the stadium to sellout every single game, but if the average attendance can boost up to the 17k - 19k range that would be great compared to what it was before under Precourt, but he was basically intentionally sabotaging the franchise for his own interest obviously, so it's not surprising attendance waned under his "leadership".

Outside of The Crew, I'm very excited to watch as they area around the stadium develops, not just Astor Village but up NW Blvd as well.  I bet Betty's puts in windows and expands soon.  More restaurants/bars are inevitable and will be awesome!!  I'm also very excited to see how they utilize this stadium outside of soccer, it's primed and ready for concerts, this would be an amazing venue for music events!!!

I actually think we will get to the point of selling out nearly every game, as long as the team is halfway decent. We are just in an awkward transition phase where ticket prices are increases and we are dealing with a bit of turnover in the paying customer base. There are certainly people who used to attend the majority of home games at the old stadium but can no longer afford to do that at the new stadium. On the flip side, there are people like you who never attended at the stadium, but who are more than willing to attend most games at the new stadium because of the improved game day experience. It will probably just take the rest of the season for more and more people to discover it and buy in.

The next two home games are Wednesday night games against opponents who are not big names, so I would expect attendance in the 16-17k range. But after that, I would expect to be around 19-20k for every game for the rest of the season. If we can make the playoffs and then keep the excitement up going in to next season, I don't think it's crazy to expect to sellout out every game next year, or at least every weekend game.

I think they may have to play around with the ticket pricing some. I had become a casual fan several years ago just because it was something fun to do in the summer and ticket prices were relatively cheap, despite the location not being quite so ideal. Now it’s in a great stadium in a great location, but even the cheapest seats are >$50 after taxes and fees, so that deters some of the folks who attended the old stadium, especially those bringing the whole family. And I think it’s a deterrent to many, like past me, who would go just for something fun and cheap to do during the week. I think cheap seats in the $30s would be more appropriate. I have a partial season package, but it’s been challenging at times to find people who aren’t diehards who are willing to pay >$50. Unless I’m paying, anyway 🤣

I agree that they need to play around a bit with the prices. It's logical to see an increase in prices after a $300m stadium is built, but I think they are a bit too high right now for the average regular season game. I would also like to see them do some sort of a student rush deal like the Blue Jackets do. Have a couple hundred tickets available for like $15 a piece for anyone with a high school or college. Get that age group hooked and then when they graduate and have a bit of disposable income they can invest in partial or full season ticket plans.

What are they going to spell? The suspense is killing me.

Ha, remember when QFM96 bought all those billboards around town and they'd just say something like "Boo" with a bunch of empty space afterward for a couple weeks? Nobody knew what was going on until they finished them.

The LDC will host the USMNT vs Costa Rica World Cup Qualifier in October.

Columbus has hosted 10 WCQs (all at Historic Crew Stadium) and only lost one. Let's hope we can keep the magic alive in the new place. It should be an electric atmosphere.

It sounds like Cincinnati is getting the Mexico game. Based on what I've heard, Columbus, Cincinnati, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Austin were all in the running for the Mexico game as well as the other upcoming WCQs. For the Mexico game, US Soccer is requiring nearly 100% of the ticket revenue to be turned over to them as well as some other pretty large revenue streams. Cincinnati was willing to take the horrible financial deal in order to host the game. Austin took the easiest and cheapest deal and are hosting Jamaica. Nashville won the game against Canada. Games against Honduras and El Salvador have not yet been announced, but one of them will probably be in Minnesota.

Costa Rica was by far the biggest game after the Mexico game, so it's nice that Columbus got it. As much as I would have loved to have the Mexico game here, I'm glad the city/team didn't let US Soccer take advantage of us with a crappy financial deal. Cincinnati will be a one and done Mexico host, so hopefully it's worth it for them.

USMNT wanted to be in Cincinnati period. I’ve known this game was going to cincy for months. Cincinnati’s made for tv new stadium along with revenue potential from its huge amount of premium seating and 26,000 seats makes it perfect for this game. Also sports is all about MONEY, this game is going to generate a ton of it so it will definitely be back to cincy.

Keep your FCC cheerleading to the FCC threads.

US Soccer was going to go to whichever city with a new stadium would give them the best deal. It was between Columbus, Minnesota, and Cincinnati. Cincinnati bit the bullet and gave US Soccer what they wanted. You haven't known anything for months because the decision was just made in the last couple weeks.

Your "made for tv stadium" with a "huge amount of premium seating" is no different than the other stadiums popping up around the league, like Columbus and Minnesota. A couple thousand seats one way or the other wasn't going to make much of a difference, because all US Soccer has to do is adjust ticket prices by a couple bucks and they can still hit their revenue goal.

US/Mexico is not coming back to Cincy after this. Sorry to burst your bubble. Now that they've broken tradition in Columbus, they are taking the US/Mexico show on tour. By the next WCQ round their will be new stadiums in Nashville, St. Louis, and likely Charlotte. Minnesota will also be in the mix as well as other traditional places like Kansas City. The game will go to one of those cities.

Wow very angry.

You do realize you mentioned Cincinnati in your post first.

Yes I have known for months, since around memorial day to be exact. You do realizes these negotiations for events start many months in advance?

Yes TQL is different than Minneapolis and Columbus because it can generate more revenue than those other venues. TQL has thousands more seats and MANY more suites.

Money rules and they are going to make a ton of it in Cincinnati so the game will definitely be back.

Yes the men’s team does want to rotate.

It’s possible to have a civilized conversation. But I knew what I was getting into looking at Twitter and the Columbus fans freaking out. My gosh chill lol.

?? Um USMNT as in the organization. It’s just a game, the players aren’t moving to the host city lol. Also as Someone who was born in Cincy and lives in NYC, you do realize most people view Ohio as one so the Cincy bashing is actually Ohio bashing lol. Players are not clamoring for Columbus OHIO either.  Let’s show each other some respect and live in reality.

I mentioned Cincinnati because I was discussing WCQ and the host cities. Cincinnati happens to be one of those.

No you haven't known because, again, the decision wasn't made until the past couple weeks. Everyone has known Cincinnati, Columbus, and Minnesota were in the running for multiple months. They have all been negotiating with US Soccer during that time period.

The number of seats played a minimal role in the decision. If it was so important, Columbus and Minnesota would have never even been considered. Again, it came to negotiations of revenue sharing. Cincinnati was fine with losing money to US Soccer so they got it.

US Soccer was going to make a ton of money in whichever city agreed to their terms.

I'm quite chill. You are the one who felt the need to jump into a Columbus thread and cheerlead for a completely different city and a completely different team.

Wether Columbus or Cincy or Cleveland, these players are going to fly in then check into the city’s best hotel (Ohio has some great ones) eat at the best restaurants (Ohio has some great ones) play in a crazy full state of the art venue (Ohio has some great venues) and get back on a plane and leave. Keep in mind many leagues/teams like the NFL don’t even allow players to leave the hotel after a certain hour so you can’t even really see a city regardless outside on the planned bubble.

What has attendance been like for the other times USMNT have played in Columbus? Do you anticipate this Cost Rica game will sell out?

Yea it will sellout immediately.

Here's a list of the other final round games of WCQ that Columbus has hosted:

Oct 11, 2000 - USA 0 Costa Rica 0 - 24,430

Feb 28, 2001 - USA 2 MEX 0 - 24,329

June 13, 2004 - USA 3 Granada 0 - 10,000

Nov 17, 2004 - USA 1 Jamaica 1 - 9,088

Sep 3, 2005 - USA 2 MEX 0 - 24,685

Feb 11, 2009 - USA 2 MEX 0 - 23,776

Sep 11, 2012 - USA 1 Jamaica 0 - 23,881

Sep 10, 2013 - USA 2 MEX 0 - 24, 584

March 29, 2016 - USA 4 Guatemala 0 - 20,624

Nov 11, 2016 - USA 1 MEX 2 - 24,650

The three games that did not sellout where early round games in which the US had already qualified for the subsequent rounds.

You both have a pride in your cities. You started the bashing of Cinci in this thread causing 646 to come in. You cannot deny that. 646 has every right to defend the selection as you have every right to critique it.

Show me specifically where I bashed Cincinnati.

Really??. Let’s move on to Lower.com. I hate to be in the arguing. USA v Costa Rica!

Yes really. Show me specifically where I bashed Cincinnati. Pointing out the fact that Cincinnati is giving up the entire ticket revenue is not bashing the city. Pointing out that the game will be somewhere else in the next qualification cycle is not bashing Cincinnati. Stop being so defensive.

The smokestack appears to be complete! Well, at least this side of it. I'm assuming the other side is also complete.

Moderator Note:  Enough with this petty back-and-forth between the merits of Lower.com Field and TQL Stadium and anything related to the comparison between the two new stadiums.

THIS ENDS NOW

From this post on, no one needs to say anything about TQL Stadium in this Columbus thread about Lower.com Field and the surrounding future development.

And no one needs to say anything about Lower.com Field in the Cincinnati thread about TQL Stadium (which is now in the Completed Projects section).

This is a warning to everyone that the next violation will earn a time-out.

I see that 646empire "liked" this warning.  Which shows that 646empire doesn't realize it was specifically directed at him(!)  So, to recap today's posts:

An announcement was made today about the USMNT playing their Mexico WC qualifying game at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati and their Costa Rica WC qualifying game in Columbus later this year.

cbussoccer pointed out in his announcement of the news that a possible reason for the Mexico game leaving its traditional "Dos a Cero" home in Columbus was that the USMNT Federation wanted all the ticket revenue for the Mexico game and the Columbus stadium management team wouldn't agree to it.  Maybe cbussoccer shouldn't have mentioned this in relation to Cincinnati - but with the decades-long history of the USMNT playing Mexico in Columbus, it is probably an question that needed addressing.

And then the self-professed NYC hyper-booster of TQL Stadium - 646 empire - has to come into this Columbus thread on full-blast how-dare-you mode.

If 646empire wants to hyper-boost TQL Stadium in the TQL Stadium thread - that's fine.  But when 646empire repeatedly comes into this Lower.com thread to hyper-boost TQL Stadium - that's trolling.  And trolling will get you a time-out.

I believe these are the parking lots that NRI still owns.  Didn't Brian Ellis recently come out and say they want to develop these?  Will be a great street presence with the plaza and stadium directly across and Astor Park (Pizzuti) cattycorner!!!
