Was in Columbus yesterday visiting some family, then girlfriend and I went out to dinner in the short north and after we went for a walk. Happened to walk down High and turn right on Nationwide around 7:15. People were everywhere (on a Buckeyes game-night no less!), and after a few minutes I figured out why, so we followed the crowd all the way to the new stadium. Awesome vibe on the street and the exterior is striking. Very happy the new stadium appears to have turned out excellently, will return ASAP to go to a match.

More projects around the stadium are already approved and should start to go vertical this fall.  Assuming you don't get back til next season, things should look quite different back there by the time you get to see it next!

I feel like we should see work start over there any day now. Has anyone noticed any activity recently?

I went through there Friday evening to check progress.  Nothing is going vertical as of yet.  The main activity back there right now, as far as I could tell is focused on the new park going in along the river next to the new pedestrian bridge.

Gotcha. Thanks for the update! Hopefully we’ll start to see some movement on the buildings in the coming weeks then.

I was at the game Saturday and it still looked like they were using the area as staging for parking and what not. Ground looks levels out though so I'm sure it's an "any day now" type situation. Think it's possible they wait until after the MLS season?

My understanding is that the parking garage went out to bid about a month ago so the city should be moving forward with that soon.

If I'm not mistaken, the office building and apartment buildings still need to go before the Downtown Commission for final approval. So far they have only had conceptual reviews. (The parking garage received final approval already.)

A parking garage over there will be really awesome. That way you can park by Nationwide and have to deal with way less people all trying to leave at the same time! Let the anti-walkers have the close garage and sit in traffic after the game!

To anyone going to any of these, the garage outside the North Market is an awesome option. Little bit of a walk but you'll be in and out of the garage in minutes after the game. Just used it for the Crew last weekend and had 0 issues and it's only $9.

I'll one-up you at the risk of ruining my parking plan haha. The last two games I've gone to, I've parked in the surface lot at the NE corner of Vine and Kilbourne.  It takes two seconds to get out of, it's extremely easy to get on 670, and it only cost $5 if paying by app this past Saturday. It's a great deal.

In terms of the game tomorrow, it's going to be a very light crowd at the LDC. Nobody really cares about this game as it's more or less an exhibition match, and it's not included in season ticket packages.

In the new September construction roundup from Columbus Underground (I linked this in the random development thread) they mention site prep has started on Astor Park so hopefully that means we will start seeing some actual construction this Fall!

Lower.com Field Recognized with James B. Recchie Architectural Award

The Columbus Landmarks Foundation announced today the winner of its 31st annual James B. Recchie Design Award as Lower.com Field, the brand new home to The Columbus Crew SC Major League Soccer team.

The stadium, designed by HNTB, Inc. and MKSK serves as a new sports anchor in the Arena District portion of Downtown Columbus, which will eventually be flanked by additional mixed-use development known as “Astor Park”.

A nice ESPN article on the long history of Columbus' influence on soccer in the USA.  The game may move around a bit over the future years, but you can't deny the original rich history here.....well done Columbus!!!

"Columbus is an incredible market that has played host to many memorable USSF matches over the years," said David Wright, USSF chief commercial officer. "With a world-class stadium and passionate fans, we couldn't be more excited to return."

On a separate note, does anyone have a drone shot of the stadium recently?  I know the huge lettering/signage on the roof was completed a while ago now.

This was posted by one of the national soccer writers yesterday during the team's training. I will never not love the way the opening in the SE corner perfectly frames the center of the Columbus skyline from this vantage point. It's picturesque.

It also looks like they've added an LDC logo above the Nordecke. I don't think that was there the last time I was in the stadium a few weeks ago.

Agreed - this is new as it was not there during the Campeones cup match (last time I was at the stadium). Not sure if its permanent or temporary for the WCQ match. I like it! Hope it is there to stay and I also hope it is illuminated.

Damn do those power lines really take away from it. Come on AEP, your name is in this photo come bury those lines!

Since the stadium opened, the "Triangle" has become more and more a PRIME piece of real estate.  Look at how much open land that is.  I desperately want to see a new vision for that piece of land emerge sooner rather than later.  Astor Park is great, but "The Triangle" needs to become a central focus as well.  Something spectacular should go there and be the "center" of the AD....maybe some form of observation tower? I dont know, all i know is that piece of land needs a great vision with people thinking outside of the box.  Could be iconic if done right.

That’s where our NFL stadium is going to go…at least in my Sim City version of Cbus, anyway 😂 But for real, I’m just hoping something big for the lot immediately to the north of the stadium comes along in the near future. IIRC, there were initially plans for a 20-story senior living tower that ended up being scrapped, which I’m okay with. I would like something a lot more impactful for the area to go there. Maybe a tower that includes a boutique hotel, some sort of soccer museum, bars, etc.

Yeah lets not put a giant senior center there please haha. The seniors just all end up congregating at local businesses like coffee shops or McDonalds and take up 40 seats and collectively spend $28 over the course of 4 hours.

Yeah that was not a good idea. The 20 story tower, yes. Senior living center? no.

Now now let's not be ageist and all* There are some seniors (or at least near seniors)on this board.  Not ok to stereotype groups for laughs. Would you do that to blacks, gays, women, etc.?**  Don't make me call AARP on your a$$-they go all out! lol.  I am not saying that what you are saying is wrong, but maybe it is best left 'unsaid'? Agree though that a senior center is about the worst idea for that location.

*especially since if something does not kill you off first, you will be a senior one day yourself(and getting old SUCKS)!!! trust me I just worked in my father's yard today and it almost killed my old a$$!!!! lol.

I'm not surprised by it but I was hoping that NE corner of the resi would have been set aside for a small commercial tenant -- a coffee shop or something could have been nice there, deeper into the development and across from the NW entrance to the stadium. But considering the garage is fully just a garage I guess they weren't too concerned about activating Columbus Crew Way...

Downtown Commission signs off on office, residential buildings near Lower.com Field

By Bonnie Meibers  –  Staff reporter , Columbus Business First

The first two buildings in Astor Park, the mixed-use development planned near the Columbus Crew's new home, are ready to start construction soon.

After getting a certification of appropriateness from the Downtown Commission, Pizzuti Cos. and Haslam Sports Group will now start the entitlement process and work to get the project rolling.

The office building will have retail in the ground floor, so I’m sure they figured that would be good use for now.

I wonder if they didn't because outside of games, this area is too far away from the main action of the Arena District and the housing going there won't be nearly dense enough to otherwise support it.

Yea, hopefully they will have something in a later phase as this area supports a higher population -- a little neighborhood spot.

Would be real nice to have a few spots to eat over there so you can get there early, grab some food and have a short walk into the stadium. It's honestly not too bad going from the Nationwide Arena area to the stadium on foot, but I know some people are so dead set against walking that the distance would prevent them from even considering going to a game. I don't get the aversion to walking, but to each their own.

So, I am unsure if this is new but.. I was driving down spring street last night and noticed that the electrical transmission station along spring now has uplighting installed.

Is this new?

I never noticed this before but I dont often find myself on spring street in the evening hours. If it is new, it is certainly welcome. Definitely adds visual appeal to an otherwise boring sight. My first guess is that Connect added these as a part of their reno of the municipal light building but again, not even sure if these lights are new.

I got a picture of this earlier today. The lighting definitely is new (I certainly do not remember it being this bright before)...however I'm not sure if there just wasn't any lighting here before, or if there used to be older high pressure sodium style lighting that has been replaced by white LEDs.

IMG_1262.thumb.jpeg.588119f24ab238fe011ecdb03284ac44.jpeg

From the photo it doesn't appear to be driven by aesthetic.

From prior experience with substations, my guess is it is just a general upgrade for safety and security. New LED + additional lights make a notable impact on appearance. Especially if they've had any recent activity regarding intrusion or theft. If they are also planning more work at the station as the area grows and upgrades, additional lighting may have been needed to better extend the working hours. There are other stations around town that you'll see lit up similarly.

Most would be surprised how often someone breaks into a humming substation for copper grounds.

When i was taking this, i asked one of the workers if there was any updates on that old building that sits right next to the new pedestrian bridge...  He said it was originally slated for demolition, but someone recently bought it and that they plan on opening a bar in it.

Are you talking about this structure? If so, that'll be a neat spot, since it's perched right on the river bank.

i agree, it could be a neat spot.

Wow thats great! When heading to some games this summer I mentioned how cool that building would be if it served as a rental facility for kayak/canoe livery and other water activities with the launch just below it. Its multi story so my idea was rentals by the water and a bar/check in area at the top.

Glad to hear the bar part is coming to fruition.

of course, there was no way for me to confirm any of that...

He did also mention that just this past weekend someone drove into the corner of the building (he said if that building wasn't there, they would have drove right into the river) -so I'm hoping there's no structural damage.

That’s good news because it’s kind of an eyesore at the moment. Trying to think of all the cool/cheesy names they could come up with for it.

LDC will host 2 qualifiers in its first year of operation. This is Columbus's 12th WCQ. Of the prior 11 qualifiers, 2 were held during the winter. Those games were Dos A Cero 2001 and 2009. Let's hope for continued success in LDC, Columbus and Ohio (which will now host 3 of 7 homes matches this cycle).
