Cleveland among 24 U.S. cities vying to host Centennial Copa America soccer tournament games

Northeast Ohio soccer fans might have something big to look forward to in 2016.

Cleveland is one of 24 U.S. cities that have expressed interest in hosting games during next year's Centennial Copa America, according to this news release from the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football.

The organization, known as CONCACAF, said “between eight and 13 stadiums will ultimately be selected” to host games for the 16-nation tournament, which will be played June 3-26, 2016. It will be the first time this tournament has been staged outside South America.

“One important factor in determining the winning bids will be a recommended stadium seating capacity of at least 50,000, as this high-profile tournament is sure to draw multitudes of fans to each stadium selected,” CONCACAF said in the release.

The cities that expressed interest in hosting games are as follows: Atlanta; Baltimore; Boston; Chicago; Cleveland; Dallas; Denver; Detroit; Houston; Indianapolis; Jacksonville, Fla.; Kansas City, Mo.; Los Angeles; Nashville, Tenn.; New York/New Jersey; Orlando, Fla.; Philadelphia; Phoenix; St. Louis; San Diego; San Francisco; Seattle; Tampa, Fla.; and Washington, D.C.
