M City flagship to hit new heights as Mississauga’s tallest tower

Mississauga’s skyline will climb higher and take on another distinctive shape when the first of 10 proposed towers in the Rogers M City development rises at the corner of Burnhamthorpe Rd. and Confederation Pkwy.

The flagship M City building will stand 60 storeys, making it the tallest in Mississauga, and feature an undulating design that bookends the 50- and 56-storeys in the curvy Absolute towers to the east.

“It was our intention to do something truly iconic to frame the downtown. We think this building really does achieve that,” said Mark Reeve, a partner in Urban Capital Developments, the company working with Rogers Real Estate Developments to build M City.

Idk I think Centre Island, most of the lakefront, and Trinity Bellwoods are all pretty great.

Compared to other cities it's historic size, it is mediocre, at best. Sure, the Islands are nice, the lakefront was general terrible (Ontario Place alone is horrendous) but has improved, and Trinity Bellwoods can be found in small-town Ohio.  Toronto's main "grand" park, High Park, is fine but nothing of note.  It is clear Toronto needs better parks in order to reach another level of world-class stature.  American cities (and Montreal) are blessed to have had abundant riches in the late 19th/early 20th century when parks were made.

It doesn't matter how much development your city is seeing. It doesn't hold a candle to what Toronto is building to keep up with population growth.

In Metro Toronto, there are 68,638 housing units under construction right now. https://t.co/SnsnLS0uEq

Residential, no doubt. I think there's more commercial construction going on in the DC area than Toronto though. Capital One is just finishing their 600 ft. tower in Tysons and there is plenty of new office construction throughout the entire region.

Yeah, Seattle and DC probably eclipse Toronto in office construction.  Toronto is killing the residential tower game, though Panama City is probably the king of that, per capita, on this continent.  It's popping up out of nowhere...like a Latin Dubai.

for more comparison, sort of, there were 23,247 new units built in nyc in 2016. no idea about the metro. at least double no doubt. so likely still below metro toronto's booming se florida coast of the north. overall, there are 3.5M total residential units in the city.

A co-worker of mine, who is from Hawaii originally, recently took a vacation to a Chicago, Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, and Toronto. He's an urban planner and works in historic preservation. I asked what his favorite and least favorite cities were, and without hesitation, he said his least favorite place of the trip was Toronto. He said it seemed incredibly sterile, and much of the city looked indistinguishable from other parts. By contrast, he loved Chicago, and said it felt like a much bigger and more interesting city.

I just thought this was interesting, given how much love Toronto seems to recieve here and on other urban fourms. I've also heard these same complaints from multiple people who have recently visited Toronto. Kind of a, "yeah, it's a big city, but it's just kind of bland and lacking in character." I must say, from photos I've seen of the place, I don't feel compelled to visit.

^100%! yes, Toronto is a big, dynamic place and all that, but with all of it's racial and ethnic diversity (and there's a lot, rivaling New York's), it's like everyone has bought into the same bland (as you put it) middle class lifestyle.

It's true. It does have alot of bland parts. That said the diversity is amazing, the city is pretty clean, and the city feels so much more safe than American cities.

I think Chicago is much more bland. I suppose there are a lot of same-y glass towers in Toronto but the neighborhoods are beautiful and incredibly lively.

Yeah, it's kinda weird hearing that Toronto is "bland" but Chicago isn't.  With that said, I can see both sides of the argument (both being bland / both not being bland).

"You don't just walk into a bar and mix it up by calling a girl fat" - buildingcincinnati speaking about new forumers

Even though the south side of Chicago isn't as prosperous as the north side, its pre-WWII residential high-rises have wonderful architectural detail. And while Toronto has lots of "box towers" -- the sheer size and number of them is mind-blowing. And most were built in the past 20 years. Here's a few from my trip a little more than a month ago....

It was his first time to the Midwest, and Chicago was the first stop. It'd be interesting to hear if his reaction would have been the same if the order of the visits were reversed. I will say, though, for a first time visitor, I think Chicago is pretty impressive. The canyon of high-rises along the river is very cool and unique, and the sheer scale of the downtown area is quite impressive. Throw in the blue-turquoise water of Lake Michigan, iconic parks, and the whole Chicago 'story' (food, jazz/blues, mafia, architecture, sports...), and it makes for a very memorable and unique place.  I think those of us who have been to Chicago a million times get jaded about how special the city is for a first-time visitor.

I prefer the built environment of Chicago to Toronto. Chicago has great parks all along its lakeshore, and a quality of architecture throughout the city that Toronto does not. I see more English influence in Canadian architecture, and less detail and flourish than in the States overall.

No question Chicago's architecture, especially historically, is superior to Toronto's. But Toronto's land use policy promotes better job access, less exclusionary when it comes to race, and addresses a blighted condition before it becomes a cancerous slum. Toronto's lakefront parks are less than Chicago's, except for the island. But Toronto's economy is much more vibrant. The city and metro area are set to pass Chicago and Chicagoland any day now.
