Let's give Dayton a little love here on UrbanOhio, even on a cold, windy day.

Damn I love that arcade building!

Some great old architecture!! Glad to see some people out and about -- at least at the ice rink. That rink is pretty neat.

"In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage." -- John Steinbeck

Yes, the rink and that entire Five Points park was pretty packed actually. It was yesterday (Saturday), all the offices downtown are closed and it's cold and very windy. I wasn't going out of my way to photograph people on this run in any case. This was my first time actually walking the streets of Dayton and it was as much looking around for my own good as it was to produce these.

We'll certainly do it again. I certainly see a lot of potential. Inner Dayton needs some newer housing stock and there are places for it. I'm for preserving what can be, to be sure. Some of it is beyond repair.

ColDayMan drove me around some neighborhoods I haven't been around with the camera just yet. It's pretty striking to see a well-kept neighborhood for a few blocks, then turn a corner and "mini-Detroit" appears.

I get the feeling this city has seen its worst days and is on the way up, steadily. My dad's family has roots over here. Regardless of whether my longterm future keeps me around, I'll always root for Dayton.

Fantastic shots!

Thanks for the tour.

That neighborhood in the first few shots is great.  What area is that?

That's the Oregon District. Just southeast of downtown. Part of when ColDayMan showed me around town. I'll probably go back and cover it at length on my next Dayton run.

The rest is downtown, then a little quick journey out onto the Stewart Street bridge near UD. The Welcome Stadium parking lot was open and I just put the car there. But didn't wander too far because I wasn't sure if that was actually OK.

Thanks--always enjoy the Gem City!

The Oregon District is a fantastic urban neighborhood.  I also really like the impact of the green glass of the CareSource center on the skyline.

We need to see some more Dayton threads here! I'd love to see some more of the neighborhoods, business districts, and Oakwood- another urban(ish) gem in the Dayton area.

Nice love expressed here, in Gem City fashion.  I particularly enjoyed the entrance to 255 North Main Street where I once resided at the venerable Newcomb Manor.  Some now call it the Insco Apartments - named for Charles Insco, architect.  Love-ly...

Thanks. Since I'm new around here, I'm always interested to know what the buildings are where it's not obvious. I read that the Biltmore building is apartments for senior citizens. Maybe I can move in 25 years from now.

Downtown Dayton would get a boost for more/improved everyday amenities for residents. A modern, urban-style Kroger along the lines of the one on High Street in Columbus' Short North would go a long way to fill a need. There are places one could go.

How much danger is that Arcade building in of being torn down?  Could preservationists in Cincinnati such as the Cincinnati Preservation Collective help?

Yep, that is true. The Biltmore was originally a hotel, but now is for senior living. And agreed on the urban Kroger haha. There were proposals in the past for a Wayne Ave. replacement Kroger at the intersection of Wayne and Wyoming, but the city didn't have its cards in order. When the city was finally set, Kroger pulled the plug on the deal. Probably one of Dayton's biggest failures to date. Also about two years ago there was talk of Constantino's Market moving into the former Greyhound Bus space in the transportation center at 5th and Patterson. That never materialized, and now Drake's Gym downtown will be taking over the space instead. But yeah, if the plans ever came up again there surely would not be a shortage of real estate.

thebillshark - yes, there is an imminent threat of demolition. If you have connections with preservationists in Cincinnati that could meet with Mayor Nan Whaley, please contact them! At the moment she and her task force appear to be open to suggestions and input from the community, but keep in mind Raunch Demolition holds a major spot at the table. Owner Steve Rauch was a big contributor to her election campaign, and already the buck has slid with projects like the somewhat botched DDN building demo. Again, I get the vibe she is open to discussion, but she's going to need some dang good reasons to not pursue demolition...

^The dang good reason is likely to be the price of demolition--something between $3 and $8 million I hear. The City of Dayton doesn't have that kind of cash laying around.

  • 5 months later...

Enjoyed the pics.  Thanks
