So true. And that oft-cited 2.1MM "Cleveland" MSA doesn't include any part of Summit County... which begins only, what, a 15-20 min drive from downtown CLE?

You obviously don't know what your talking about!! Television market size is what matters in pro sports (Cleveland is 18th), not MSA size. Why are so many of you people concerned with MSA size? It's one of the least consistent ways to judge a region's size!!

This chart compares TV Market Sizes with the number of pro sports team (in the "big 4") to find an "Ideal Number of Teams." Cleveland, the 19th largest media market, should ideally have 2.5 teams according to their findings. However, in the 18 larger media markets, only seven (NYC, Chicago, Philly, Atlanta, Houston, Seattle, Orlando), are undeserved, in that the Ideal Number of Teams is greater than the number of teams present. (I disregarded LA's figure as they have gained 2 NFL teams, getting them slightly over the ideal number of teams)

 

TL;DR - Cleveland is not very abnormal in its teams to media market size ratio. (Ideally 2.5 teams)

With that being said, retaining the three teams we currently have cannot be done without maintaining what leagues (and other cities) deem to be suitable facilities. After the renovation of the Q, we've got a good bit of time (20+ years?) before relocation should be of any concern to us. There are many other teams that are facing the threat of relocation before ours, such as the Athletics, Hurricanes, Rays, Jaguars and Coyotes. After the NFL's particularly egregious relocation spree, league expansions may be the future. This is scene in the rapidly growing MLS and to a lesser extent the NHL.

Construction has begun on the renovation of Quicken Loans Arena.

A Cleveland Cavaliers spokesman on Thursday morning, Sept. 14, confirmed to Crain's that passersby will see fencing that has been erected to establish a perimeter for a staging area for cranes and for initial exterior foundation work that will transform the north side of the arena, along Huron Road and Ontario Street.

Now I guess I'm misunderstanding a little too much about this project. Is the whole arena getting a re-clad or is this just going to be the Northeast side of the arena?

I was thinking the same thing.  I know they're rushing this thing for a variety of reasons, but I hope there are more complete drawings that just haven't been released to the public that include re-clading the whole arena.  I'm not a fan of the new portion looking like it's just stuck on the the older portion.

Work begins on $140-million facelift for Quicken Loans Arena ahead of NBA's All-Star Game deadline

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Work has begun on $140 million in upgrades to Quicken Loans Arena - ahead of the Friday deadline that the NBA set for the arena to be considered for an All-Star game. 

 

Perimeter fences were erected this week around construction staging areas along Huron Road across from the arena and on East 6th Street along the east side of The Q. Workers were on site Thursday assembling cranes that will be used during construction.

 

Still unresolved, however, is the fate of Cleveland's efforts to land an NBA All-Star game, and the several days of activity that go with the event, for 2020 or 2021.

I sure wish they would use some of the funding to install ground floor retail in that parking garage. It really kills the neighborhood.

So ... yesterday I talked to a guy who knows a guy  :wink2:  and was told that there probably wont be any actual construction starting on the Q until the end of the year / beginning of next year.  They quickly set up the fencing and brought in equipment to drill down and do some testing, but all of that is being done at this time so they can officially say "construction has started" for the All-Star game timeline.  But any real construction on the building itself is actually a ways away.

It's weird that the Cleveland Gladiators cannot just play at CSU's Wolstien Center.

Gladiators to shut down for 2 years.  By june 16 next year that is 2/3 of their season. Why can't

play at the underutilized Wolstein Center to finish next season and at Wolstein Center for the second season.

Definitely a convenient way for the Gladiators to exit the league which will inevitably fold.  They've gone from 12 teams in 2015 to just 5 teams in 2017.  The AFL has/is collapsing.  Not a bad move from the Gladiators as they can take two years off, re-evaluate the arena football landscape and jump back into the league of the future.

CLEVELAND, OH - Construction on The Q Transformation, the renovation project to update and modernize the 23-year-old Quicken Loans Arena, will occur in mid-February with barriers to define the construction zones going up on February 5th. The initial phase of construction will focus on the exterior of the building and will impact the way fans enter and exit The Q for events, as well as vehicles traveling on Huron Rd. in the Gateway District.

 

Work will start on the north side of the arena along Huron Rd, and the south side of the arena facing Progressive Field. The north expansion will span from the corner of Ontario St. and Huron Rd. to the corner of Huron Rd. and E. 6th St. The expansion of the north side of the arena will add a 42,530-square foot atrium space along Huron Rd. that will be enclosed by a glass facade. The south expansion will add 6,350-square feet to the arena’s main concourse.

Thanks. I am underwhelmed by the south facade transformation.  Also the entrance locations on the north facade do not match up to any street crosswalks.

I just noticed that the renderings submitted to The City Planning Commission back in December had Gensler Rossetti as the architects.  What happened to SHoP Architects? They were the ones originally attached as the architectural team with Rossetti.

Just went down for a Monsters game and parked in the E. 6 garage right across. They basically have Huron closed down to a one way right in front of the arena. Before events, traffic goes north, but the afterwards traffic is routed south towards Ontario.

Correct, I'm guessing they were just the design architect. The design has not changed. Gensler is probably doing the Construction Documents. Rosetti is probably helping with the planning and is most likely the direct tie to Gilbert.
